Best way to fill in dye collection?
Power trade → get rich → buy whatev
Sorry, but that’s not a very helpful response. If I were a power trader I wouldn’t be asking this question.
With inflated prices now, it’s pretty hard to unlock all the dyes, probably would cost around 100g for all of them from scratch. I’m glad I got all mine before the prices were manipulated. With prices so high, the only feasible way is to be rich already, or buy gems (which is what ANet wants). Some people claim low dye drop rates, but I get at least 1 or 2 a day playing around 2-4 hours.
Buy gems to convert to gold, or buy gems to buy dye packs?
Best way would be to go to a designated store and buy the gem cards. These are fixed rates so even when in game you’re paying more and more gold per gem daily, the cards stay at a rate printed on them. So buy the card, then buy a gem pack. Useless to convert gems to gold with the 30% tax.
I still need a lot more dyes. In the current market is it cheaper and more effective to buy gold with gems, then purchase all the dyes from the TP – or – buy the dye pack bundles with gems, and possibly combine unwanted dyes in the Mystic Forge in hopes of rares?
You can hope for the right dye, but if you are going after Celestial or Abyss you may never see it. The cheapest route is to handpick the dyes you want and buy those specific colors from the TP.
Getting all the colors is likely to be very expensive.
For example, you can get Abyss dye for the cost of about 3 dye packs.

Wait, what? I don’t know about this! Please explain?
I’d be buying gems with real money.

The gems you buy with real $$ through the BLTP are also at a fixed rate. So why would you waste the time driving to a store to get a gem card?
To be perfectly honest with you it’s probably cheaper to just buy each dye individually from the TP rather than gambling away on dye packs and the mystic forge.
Before the Unidentified Dye price skyrocketed I always opened the ones I got (and that was a LOT). I think I have most of the common dyes but almost none of the others. I’ve also combined a lot of the common dyes in the mystic forge and guess what I got? More common dyes the vast majority of the time.
I know some dyes like Abyss and Celestial cost a fortune but you could easily spend more gambling for them. The common dyes though go for less than a silver last I checked.
I should probably collect common dyes first, and as I hopefully get richer at higher levels, move up to uncommon and rares. I, too, have had terrible luck with the mystic forge.

2k gems for 23$ online while it’s $20 for 1.6k or $10 for 800 through BLTP
The only dye acquiring method that doesn’t involve RNG, is buying them individually off the TP. So that’s really the only reliable way to get them.
If you’re trying to get specific dyes, figure out which you want, and just buy those individually with gold.
If you’re trying to get the most variety of dyes, the best way would be to mass buy the cheapest dyes on the TP, and throw them in the forge.
I would never buy the gem dye-pack. 5 of the dyes are common and 2 of them are uncommon/rare. Considering how many different dyes there are and how valuable gems are, it seems like it’s nothing but a rip-off, unless you’re lucky and get a high value grey dye.

Agreed. Random chance generally does not favor the player.
OP: The best answer is to buy gold with your gems.
TP everything imo. I am collecting dyes and i sell the unidentified away and buy specific dyes from the TP, but thats just me. =)
The packs are not nearly good enough to compete with gem->gold->unidentified dyes yet. When the price of unidentified dye gets over 40s, maybe. And maybe not even then. The packs really aren’t a good deal.
I am collecting all the colors on a single main. I just open every unidentified I get, and keep duplicates until I can pump 4 of the same tier through the Mystic Forge. Progress is slow now that I have 158 commons, 60-odd uncommons and 30 of the rares, but I’m still creeping forward.
For a while I did sweep the TP regularly searching for dye and sorting by price to pick up the cheapest ones. Some to fill in gaps in my collect, some to dump in the MF. When the lowest price for an identified dye is less than 1/4 the price for an unidentified, there’s potential savings to be reaped.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Have you considered just making them with the cooking skill?
Have you considered just making them with the cooking skill?
Anyone that’s actually done this can attest to how terrible the results are.
Making them is expensive and time-consuming. I like making dyes for friends who send me ingredients, but right now it’s a lot better to just buy common dyes from the TP.
