Bettering Gathering Tools
no, absolutely no. even the watchwork pick should get it’s bonus taken from it.
Good suggestion! I don’t think anet will implement it, but one can always hope. +1
I very much would like to see the various gathering tools standardized, so to that end, I would support the OP’s suggestion. (Indeed, I made a very similar suggestion in the past.) However, this then basically means that the gem store tools are all undeniably better than anything a normal player could get in the game, which might generate accusations of p2w. (The Watchwork Pick is already breaking this trend, of course.)
No.
What they should do, is remove the Watchwork pick’s bonus, then convert all existing “fancy picks” into skins, ones which you can apply to any pick you want, account bound, so that any pick can look like the fancy ones.
Then they introduce an “infinite pick/axe/scythe” that has no effect to it, it’s just infinite. Anyone who buys or owns an existing infinite tool gets one of these for free, so basically there is zero function loss there except for the Watchwork one.
Then they should have a “Harvesting aspect” slot, which you can slot in a special aspect that gives bonus resources, like the “Bounty Aspect” would cause you to harvest food items in addition to normal stuff (like bonus mushrooms from rocks and trees), or the “Scarlet Aspect” that gives you watchwork from rock, spores from plants and trees.
You would not need a special tool to use these aspects, and they would be earned through completing gameplay objectives, not off the gemstore.

That’s a pretty neat idea there, Ohoni. The “Aspect” slot, that is. Maybe these Aspects could be crafted and slotted into the infinite tool so it gives you bonus chances for special materials when you harvest?
It would be a way of not only introducing more stuff for crafters to create (and thereby providing a sink for some underused mats), but also as a means of creating more supply for rare mats like Toxic Spores, Azurite, and maybe even stuff like Lodestones.
For example, maybe you can create a “Corrupted Essence Aspect” that fits into an infinite tool. This gives that tool a rare chance (5% chance, maybe lower) to drop a Corrupted rare crafting mat that varies depending on the tier of the node (e.g. when slotted into a mining pick, it has a rare chance to give Corrupted Slivers from Copper nodes, Corrupted Lodestones from Orichalcum nodes etc.)

Despite having the molten pick and wishing I had the watchwork pick, I don’t think that removing the bonus from the watchwork pick is fair to those who purchased it knowing it had that bonus. Also, the molten pick was originally 800 gems and soulbound but the upgrade to account bound was free so it was initially 200 gems cheaper than the watchwork pick.

I could not agree more.
as a far-distant 2nd choice, I would go with what OP suggested: where each gem tool has a small chance at different limited materials.

If you take away the bonus I’d be very upset, and so would many others. And even more than that the price of sprockets would climb as the only other resource for sprockets is the home node. Keep the price of sprockets reasonable by keeping the bonus on that pick as is.
I like the OP’s idea, but would refine it to only include bonuses that are either impossible to get (Azurite Orbs) or very restricted currently (Toxic Spores).
Right now, there is no way to obtain new Azurite Orbs. We can get Azurite crystals from the molten fractal but you cannot upgrade them. Either we get a way to refine those crystals into orbs, the ori nodes get added back to that map, or a rare chance to obtain an azurite orb (INSTEAD of one of the other orbs) be added to the molten pick.
Toxic Spores can only be gotten from Kessex and the toxic spore events and even then it is only one spore per node group. Either they up the chance to get a pristine spore to 1-4 per group in Kessex and events or there be a chance to get them from the Dreamcleaver Axe.
The other suggestions the OP gave, I wouldn’t think are needed as the other items suggested are fairly common drop either during their respective festivals or can be easily gotten elsewhere.
If for some reason the two items did get upgraded they would need to put them back in the gem store for several weeks to allow people to get them. I have all three sets (minus the two new molten items) and would love some reason to use one of the other items. Either way I don’t see them changing any of the harvesting items from how they currently work.

Awesome idea. I would instantly buy way more of these, if they were skins.

The people who are angry at lost functionality can request a refund and get their gems back from Customer Support. They can add Sprockets to other locations in-game to keep the market stable.

If that was a genuine concern, then they could just raise the amount of sprockets dropped by the home nodes, or put some other source of them into the world. The point is that the gem-store purchased pick should not have an advantage over the normal ones.

I think they need to level the playing field on this one just to be fair. I don’t care what prices were back in the day. I care about the now and tbh the watchwork pick offers a bonus for the same price nothing else does. Seems kinda dodgy to me.

personally, I don’t even care about the now. I care about how the game should be. do you want a game where you pay gems to get better items than are available elsewhere? I don’t.

well.. all infinte gathering tools are better then the npc sold ones to begin with, they scale which the ordinary ones do not, and they are infinite. So, you are basically saying you want to get rid of all of them because the ones in gem store are better?
The only 2 that are “functionally” better are:
- Watchwork Pick (gives sprockets)
- Consortium Sickle (gathers faster)
The only ones that I consider Functionally “worse” than the other (infinite tools):
- Wasp Axe (locks you into long animation).
- Jack-in-the-box Scickle (just effin’ annoying after a bit).
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
I was going to suggest this myself. But I would tone down a bit some of the drops.
It’s good that they are conveniend and to have reasons to get them all by giving different stuff, but they should not give lots of something very rare or expensive.
