Hi!
I am pretty new, and I am level 18. I have a friend that also plays GW2, and we like to party. But we only find good party…stuff in Black Lion Chests. These are not a problem, 4 gold/a Chest. The KEYS are the problem. I dont know how to find them, besides buying them. Can you guys help me?

P.S. I buy chests for tonics, they are awesome. Could you recommend other ways of getting cool tonics? Thanks.

you get them by chance from 100% exploring an area, so go exploring with your friend

Keys are rare. I have maybe come across 4 or 5 leveling to 80. I have a lot of chests in my bank just waiting to be opened.. keys are a random drop.

Keys are not worth it. Do not bother spending real $ for it.

If you really are desperate for keys though, you get a free one for the lvl 10 story. Go youtube it, there are tutorials on the most efficient way to farm BL keys.

current ways to get keys:
- find from a random mob, about 1 every 500 hours
- receive one from map completion, about 1 every 10 areas
- receive two (I think?) from personal story, first at level 10, second around level 70. This is the fastest/cheapest way to get keys.
- can drop from a Black Lion chest, about 1 every 4 chests
- buy them from gem store (100% chance of success)

I have a concern:
“These are not a problem, 4 gold/a Chest”
4 gold to get a chest? I hope you mean copper. If you’re currently paying 4 gold to get a chest, I’ll totally give you a better deal than that – say, 1 gold per chest.

That’s the point, the chests drop reasonably often, but you got to buy the keys.

Keys can be acquired from map completion, the human personal story arc and found in chests. They occasionally go on sale at 20% off at the gem store.

The thing is the BL chest is simply a Gem Store sample box with a very rare chance to get something truly fantastic. If you use boosters and one-shot items they you might think their fun. Otherwise their contents are mainly account bound junk.

There are LOTS of ways to get tonics. There are some NPC vendors in the open world that sell tonics, you can buy them off the trading post, and they are often released with special events. However they are not “mystery tonics”, but rather they morph you into a guaranteed form. Example: you can buy an exotic “Warm Tonic” for about 4 silver on the tp, and it will turn you into a fire elemental as many times as you want.

The Mystery Tonic from the Black Lion Chest can be crafted by a level 400 Artificer but it will cost you approximately 48 silvers worth of materials for batches of 5. There are two other Mystery Tonics which can also be crafted but not dropped from the chests. One turns you into random furniture items and the other turns you into various trees. These are all Account Bound.

.. and by “very rare,” expect that to be 0.001%, if not worse. (has anyone figured out the correct number of 0’s yet?)

You want boosters, just buy them directly. Karma booster is the only thing I find value in. I use crafting ones sometimes, but never paid attention to the benefits.
