This is a good question. I have a pile of these chests and I don’t think I want to open anymore. I just destroy the contents (read trash). I like this game, don’t get me wrong. However, the chests are useless unless they have something of value in them.

The key isn’t so much improved as the chests are slightly more ‘valuable.’

Apparently there’s a chance to get a permanent version of the portable bank/trading post items.

It’s a very, very small chance, though.

“Black Lion Key Improved” is an interesting statement in that it doesn’t seem the key is improved. I did hear that the contents of the chests were to be improved, but I have no idea if that is true. I have not been able to test this theory since I have no keys and have not received any in any drops for the past week.

I used to get key drops all the time; enough to be able to open all the chests I happen to have in my possession. However, now I have over 25 of these chests and no keys.

What I would like to see is not only a better and more valuable chest, but more keys. Purchasing the keys from the TP does not justify the rewards contained in the chest to my way of thinking. If the chests actually carried high quality items that anyone could use or sell, then I could see purchasing some. But as the cost of the keys is way too expensive, I won’t be purchasing any. Obviously as I have leveled the key drops have declined to almost nothing. So as far as I can tell Anet may wish for us to spend our gems on the keys.

I have only gotten keys to drop when I complete maps, and that is rarely. I’ve never actually found a key off a mob or chest located in game.

They need to half the cost as gem prices have halved.

It means the rewards from chests have been improved. This is generally small chance items such as a permanent black lion agent consumable and so forth.

Before then, the rewards were barely worth getting keys to open. Now we at least have some to hope for. I could see it being improved even further down the road.

even with the small chance of recovering a perm banker/trade post item, it’s simply not worth it to actually pay real money for these keys. There’s too much worthless junk in there.

Please look at DCU boxes. Those things actually have high rates of giving you really good loot and well worth the real money you put into it. I’ve gotten unique items with unique skins, equivilent of an exotic armor x2, cloaks, etc… I’ve opened maybe 20 boxes there. GW2’s chests? atm, still just a very bad value proposition. I’ve opened ~30 chests and have gotten useless items to transform me into an ostrich (I have so many I just destroyed them all), supposedly a stack of the highest quality harvest tool that actually returns “ruined ore etc”.

These need to have a chance to drop cultural T1-T3 pieces that are account bound (10%).

A chance to drop a BOE random exotic weapon (7%)
A chance to drop a BOE random exotic armor piece (7%)
A chance to drop bound on account karma/dungeon piece for your class (7%)

Remember chest runs in FOW and the like? Yea, those chests needed keys which cost in-game money. And we bought them. Hundreds of them. Because chests had items of value in them.

I’ve probably opened around 20 chests due to chests giving me more keys. Lots of boosters (crappy) and lots of tonics (crappy and take up bank space). I ended up trashing 50+ odd tonics after trying a few out.

What do you guys think of keys being like salvage kits? The ones that drop in-game would have a very low chance of getting a rare and would drop more frequently than today. However, the TP would sell keys that have varying, and better, chances of getting rare items from a chest, the more expensive the key, the better the chance of a rare. Would that make you more likely to buy keys from the TP? Actually, now that I think about it, all of the various keys could drop in-game, just the better the key, the less likely the drop. I like GW2 and want them to succeed, but I’m not going to pay real money for keys that will only get me cosmetic items, with an exceedingly rare chance at a rare item.

Take a cue from Team Fortress 2’s crates. Most crates will not be worth the cost of the key, but the small chance at a very distinctive cosmetic item (unusuals) makes them worth opening, and seasonal crates with their own specific keys and typically better reward push the cash store sales through the roof.

I really want to support GW2, I think it’s worth the $15 a month I’d pay for any other MMO, and the gambling element of keys and chests is appealing. I’m ok with knowing it’s /probably/ going to be a net loss in the end, but at least give me hope that I could earn more than what the key was worth with some luck.

From what I can tell from opening chests the improvement is that they made it more likely to pick up a black lion salvage kit — which is the best item that I’ve personally seen come out of one. I know it was said that they’ve added the permanent contracts, but I sure haven’t seen one, or even heard about anyone else getting one yet.

The “rewards” is not worth the cost, sorry! If they were i would love to spend some money to get more keyes, but as it stands now, no im not interested in some “animal potions” and salvage kits wich i can get anyway.

Well, I’m not seeing anything of value to me in the chests. I won’t buy keys for them if I can’t get anything fun from them.

supposedly a stack of the highest quality harvest tool that actually returns “ruined ore etc”.

Yeah, and it’s especially annoying when the tool doesn’t tell you what tier it actually is. I’d be fine with like a “higher chance of rares iron axe”, because then at least I’d know what I was getting and wouldn’t waste uses on the wrong kind of trees. (Because apparently cheap metals can only cut young plants?)
