Fun times at the TP after the patch notes were announced, including this mysterious sentence: “Black Peppercorns no longer drop from Mature Herb and Verdant Herb nodes.”

Well, that was all the market needed for hilarity. There must have been at least 70k supply available for less than 10c a piece early on. Price shot up to 50c, back down to 15c, and then way, way back up. Sell price was at 70c last I checked.

As usual people totally ignore the things an item is actually used to make.

Black Peppercorn – 76 copper each
Pile of Salt and Pepper – 23 copper each

Makes perfect sense….

Yeah that happened about 30 minutes after I posted.

There’s always that lag when an item spikes. It can be anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple days for the prices of things an item is used to create to catch up with the price spike on the base item.

as usual who is in the game while patch notes are released can take advantage of this time gap between patch notes and patch.

I find it interesting how it dropped in price, instead of an increase.

9 copper to 30+ copper is not a drop in price.

It’s always the same, people read patch notes and see an item that is going to become scarce. Then price EXPLODES, everyone’s buying to it make a profit ofcourse. Until the first couple of people start selling their stacks, then people panic “OMG ITS DROPPING IN PRICE, BETTER SELL MY STACK TOO”. Then the drop in price happens until it comes to a steady price 1-2 hours after update.

Learn it, live it. Because when you understand this, you’ll know when to sell your stock before everyone else does and maximize your profit. That is of course, if you were the early bird that could buy the crafting mats before everyone else did

True. On the other hand, people don’t have the patience to step back and think. What will this mean in the long run? Well, the amount of nodes giving pepper is cut in half, whereas the nodes that were cut were the most popular nodes, giving a better chance at vanilla beans. And because of the now altered loot table on mature/verdant herbs, the price of vanilla beans should start to drop over time.
Tldr price of pepper should rise over time, whereas the price of vanilla beans should drop over time.

I had 4000+ sitting in my bank that I was VERY happy to get rid of at 50-90c. Someone had bought up (not me) some months ago, about 50000 and spiked the price – in fact this has happened several times. In other words there is a LOT of supply out there but the actual demand is…rather low…20 or so required when leveling cooking.

And THAT is what people fail to factor in more than anything – what, when you remove the speculative element, is the demand for an item going to be?

You clearly are not into cooking. Some of the products made with black pepperkorn sell by the thousands per hour, amongst others, cup of lotus fries. Yes, there is pepper stock, but this will run out over time.

+1 I am not and only really use it for leveling alts. Speaking of which though, I took my lowbie necro through Queensdale this morning and ended up with 12 peppercorns in 10 minutes, so even with supply halved its doubtful that a massive increase in price will be justified.

Yes, when I did that I got 10 chocolate bars. And some butter, too. They’re still expensive though. Because what will happen once your lowby character outgrows queensdale and becomes lvl 40? That’s right, no more peppercorn for him. On the other hand, most food items he’ll use all the way to lvl 80 still require those base items. And won’t your lvl 80 necro like 30% magic find and +70 condition damage while doing events in Orr, and in dungeons? Anyway, I should stop giving info now. Sorry for the spam.

The price of black peppercorns is not going to increase, because they also raised the amount you get from low tier nodes. But it’s going to have a different effect, by the removal of black peppercorns and other “trash” items on high tier nodes, the price of “actual” materials from those nodes is going to sink because you have a better chance at not getting “crap” like black peppercorns.

It’s a way to get some of the high level characters to roam the mid level zones to gather.
