Buying gem packages in the TP..
This is common under item shop MMOs. Often they even go as far as selling packages of lets say 100 ingame currency, but stuff costs 95 currency. So you will feel more inclined to buy more currency to not feel like you are wasting something.

^ this… There is nothing that says ‘buy more gems’ than having 15 gems in your purse, unused.
That being said, you can buy the exact amount with gold. Or you can sell your unused gems for gold.
It is not such a big problem as in other games.
Always carries a towel – Never panics – Eats cookies.
I understand that I could buy one gem package and then use in-game gold to cover the amount I’m short but that’s not really the point. And another thing. If I were to buy gems in order to upgrade my game to the digital deluxe for 2000 gems, the cheapest I could get it would be to buy the 800 and 1600 gem packages which = $30. The digital version at regular price is $59.99 and deluxe at regular price is $79.99. So it will actually cost me a total $89.99 to upgrade. I’d be paying $10 more for digital deluxe than it would have been if I purchased the deluxe on it’s own. Just another reason I feel like I’m being taken for a ride.
I really do want to support Anet and this game. I think they did a great job, but the more I see these little “scams” the more I feel like going back to one of those other subscription based mmo’s. Sure it might cost me more to play in the long run, but at least I know what I’m paying for up front and I’m not being jerked around.
Upgrading is cheaper. let me explain.
so you got 2 choices.
A: You have the SE game(59,99) and pay for the upgrade(30) —> total 89,99
B: buy the DDE and drop the SE(59,99) --> total 139,98
Compare it to any other type of software. buying an upgrade is considerd beeing cheaper if you already own a previous version, because you already payed for that.
If you dont own the previous version you buy the most recent version and not the upgrade.

If you want only a very specific number of gems, you can always use the currency exchange.
Bestbuy and Amazon both offer gem cards – the “main” gem card is for 2000 gems.
Note if buying on Amazon.com, buy ONLY from amazon, all the 3rd party retailers on that site (or would be 4th party?) charged more than the “MSRP” for the gem cards.
And amazon gives free shipping on it. For me at least, Best Buy also has it locally according to the website.
Best Buy in Canada has options to check availability online for a local store. They even offer online reservations. I reserved mine online, waited for email confirmation saying it was ready, and picked it up in-store the next day <3

Not all of us have enough gold to buy the amount of gems we require.

At the rates of 100 gems being around 1g 61s, thats useless and a waste of time getting the in-game gold This is why it should have been a flat amount for 100 gems instead of skyrocketing due to the black friday sale.
