Colin Johanson on how arenanet measures success.

I’m having trouble figuring out the cutoffs for different weapons and armor when salvaging. The cutoffs for tier (and the range in between tiers which gives you either tier materials) are different based on wood and ore. This makes sense as all 6 types of wood can be produced, but not all metals (silver and gold are never found from salvaging armor and weapons to my knowledge.) Is there somewhere a chart of where the cutoffs are for both wood and metal when salvaging?
Editing for clarity: When salvaging a weapon of level x, I want to know what tiers of wood and metal can be produced. I know for some x it varies (between two possibilities.) I’d also like to know where those (varying) zones are.

I believe silver and gold are from accessories etc.
I believe silver and gold are from accessories etc.
Yup. That I figured out. My question is for non accessories (since the trinket case is easy cause gold and platinum are in the name.) I want to know when salvaging a weapon, what levels give you what tiers of metal and wood.
I would like to know that too. I scoured the internet to look for such information but it doesn’t exist.
My characters are still adventuring through the lower level zones, so here is what I can provide from my own experiences:
Item Salvages (i.e. weapons and armor):
Level 1 – 20: Copper Ore, Green Wood Logs, Rawhide Leather Scraps, Jute Scraps.
Level 21 – 31: Iron Ore, Soft Wood Logs, Thin Leather Scraps, Wool Scraps.
Level 32 – ??: Iron Ore, Seasoned Wood Logs, Coarse Leather Scraps, Cotton Scraps.
Note that on the lower edges of each band, there is still a chance you might get mats from the lower tier when salvaging them.
Salvage items (e.g. Tattered Hide, Bit of Metal Scrap) are much easier to keep track of as the mats they drop is linked directly to their price.
Salvage items that are worth 6 copper give Copper Ore, Green Wood Logs, Rawhide Leather Scraps and Jute Scraps.
Items worth 10 copper give Iron/Copper Ore, Green/Soft Wood Logs, Rawhide/Thin Leather Scraps and Wool/Jute Scraps.
Items worth 14 copper give Iron/Gold Ore, Seasoned/Soft Wood Logs, Coarse/Thin Leather Scraps and Cotton/Wool Scraps.
Not sure what higher items give as I’m not up to those maps yet.
Thanks Zaxares. That is not complete but it is a great start.
The wiki has salvage items covered. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Salvage_Item
The individual pages for those items tells you were they are dropped. The level of those areas will give you the approximate level range for the gear as well.
I’m not interested in the salvage items, just the materials you get from breaking down weapons and armor into wood and ore. I want to know when salvaging weapons and armor of different levels, what woods and ore will I get? Also is there a website that can just tell me specifically for an item, what it will salvage into? GW2spidy says what you need to make it, but not what it breaks down to. Maybe there is another site that would have this?
I don’t think there ARE hard cut-offs…that’s the problem. I used to buy a lot of white weapons and armor on the cheap via buy orders and salvage them to supplement my crafting. Often I would salvage hundreds of items at a time. The general pattern I noticed was this:
- copper/jute/green wood would salvage from anything below about level 22
- iron salvaged from weapons/heavy armor from roughly level 22 all the way until roughly level 44/45; at these upper levels, sometimes platinum would drop instead
- platinum salvaged reliably from around level 48 up. I never bought gear to salvage for mithril (because it’s been very cheap for a while), but I’d think this metal would show up around level 60 or so
- as for the woods: this got to be frustrating because the level window in which I got Seasoned (tier 3) wood always seemed to be small. If I was lucky I would get it from level 32 weapons, but these often salvaged as Soft Wood as well. Level 36-44 weapons seemed to be the sweet spot for Seasoned Wood, above that you start getting Hard Wood. Elder Wood seems to start showing up in the upper 50s.
- I never did that much armor salvaging for cloth or leather. Whenever I needed a lot of Tailor/Leatherworker mats, I just buy-ordered containers (like Moldy Bags), which also drop fine mats in addition to cloth and leather scraps.
The main thing is that there seem to be item levels at which you might salvage either of two tiers of mats.
Thank you celestial for that comment. I do think it’s a tricky thing. I agree that there are levels where you can get two different things. I’m surprised the regions where you get one type and regions where you get two types (along with which types you get) aren’t listed as a table on the wiki somewhere.
I, too, would like to know this table. I’ll do some testing tonight to further contribute to it.
there are levels that have multiple options, but there are also levels where the outcome is guaranteed. I think it’s more of a bell-curve, too: level 20 and 21 seem to give mostly soft wood but also a little green.
I would also like to know what type of item gives what. bows and staves I know give wood while swords and daggers give metal, but what do the others give? specifically, the ones that require both materials to make (such as horn and pistol). is it just randomly either/or?

I’ve gotten both wood and ore (always just one or the other, though) from axes, hammers, pistols, rifles, maces, tridents, spears, and harpoon guns. Torches always give wood, I think. Focuses generally salvage as wood as well. Warhorns usually salvage as ore. Interestingly, shields usually salvage as ore, but every once in a while I get wood PLANKS from them!
Generally items that require two types of mats to craft will salvage into one or the other material. That said, certain items seem to lean towards one type of material. Hammers, axes, rifles, tridents and harpoon guns seem to primarily salvage towards wood, while pistols, maces, shields, warhorns and spears tend towards metal.
Like Celestial said, I always seem to get wood from torches. And I can echo his experience on getting wood planks on occasion too. (It’s only happened twice or three times throughout the entire past year, however.)
I think the reasons that the level ranges seem inconsistent or tricky is that depending on your salvage kit, anything you’re breaking down could have a chance at a ‘rare’ material salvage.
With lvl 67+ rares and exos, obviously that means a chance for t6 and ectos. However, with lower-tier items, my interpretation has been that the ‘rare salvage’ is that you could get the next tier up from what you would normally salvage judging by the level of the item itself.
What I just typed sounds convoluted, but hopefully it’s clear enough. :x
Keep in mind the kits specifically mention chance of returning rarer (higher tier) materials) in their descriptions.
I did some tests and found something interesting. first, some results:
I got green wood from level 1-20, soft wood from 21-33, seasoned wood for 34-48, hard wood from 49-63, elder wood from 64-80. this is before the chance to get a higher grade (as if you were using crude SK)
I also found that what item type you are salvaging will give different amounts of material. focus and torch always gave 1 log. scepter gave 1-2 logs. bows, staff, trident gave 1-3 logs.
I focused on wood for this experiment to keep it simple, but I imagine ore/leather/cloth to be similar.
Good to know. Likely a similar breakdown for ore.
