Does Magic Find Work Right Now?
I think Black Lion Trading is not the proper forum for this question, but I’ll answer anyway:
1: No
2: No
3: No
4: Yes
5: No

I woulda sworn it works when gathering. Must be a false impression from a series of coincidences. D’oh. :-)
It does and it doesnt.
If you do 1500 trials in a row you will net the same amount.
If you did 150 trails of 10 spaced out 12 hours, you would see a significant skew towards MF.

what he said
the best MF is no grind
People see what they want to see. If you have data on the subject, post it. If you don’t have data to show, then you are speculating. My Tikbalang Ward is working exactly as I hoped it would!
Instead of projecting all your hopes and dreams onto magic find, perhaps you should consider – what is “magic” in this game? What would make sense to the devs? What can you go test on your own? What’s already been tested by players? Do the devs gain anything whatsoever out of spelling out exactly what the stat does for you?
Also consider – if you are guaranteed to get a result from some action (like mystic forge recipes, gathering, and salvaging) does the concept of magic find even make sense? You’d be reducing the chance of obtaining some item for the sake of another item. At least with monsters, there exists a chance to get no items and a chance to get multiple items, so more magic items doesn’t require less of other items to drop.
With the mystic forge, it’s conceivable that magic find would increase the rate at which 4 random items produce one that is more rare rather than the same rarity. With gathering, it could increase the rate at which you get gems (which magically increase the stats of the item you upgrade). With salvaging, it could increase rares and upgrade recovery chance over what the salvage kit does on its own.
It may or may not work on mobs – but if it does work the effect is NOT pronounced.
I did the Cursed grind for a week wearing 80% magic find. I earned enough for an Exotic outfit.
Then wearing my new armor this weekend with only 3% magic find I can not tell a difference even though im doing the same grind difference.
Both ways I get lots of whites and blues ad a good number of greens with an occasional yellow.
Sometimes I get a good event where I pull 2 or 3 yellows, sometimes I get a bad event where I pull nothing higher than blue – this happens both with and with out MF on.
well, at first i though it worked for opening chests, combining mistyc forge items, gathering and stuff, but after a bunch of tries i failed to see any upgrade on my prizes from the MF effect (got all greens and blues from chests, didnt got any higher rarity items from the mystic forge)
then i started thinking
“well, ofc it shouldn’t work on this aspects, else people would do as i did and have 2 sets and just wear MF set for this special times (opening chests, forging, etc)”
i had around 80% MF with set/pots/guild buff/outmannered buff
and the only difference i found was on mob kills
i could get 2~3 yellow items on 20mins of farming with 2 friends on WvW mobs with outmanned buff, tho i wasnt lv80 yet, so idk if yellow items are supposed to be easier to get at lower lvl
havnt tried anymore since i got to 80, rather just farm dungeons lol
I noticed a huge difference a few weeks ago in Cursed. Was getting 3-4 Rares per DE with 180% MF. Last few weeks though, it’s been much lower, and not just because of DR. I’m lucky if I get one Rare every 1-2 DEs now, even before I start hitting DR. Stealth nerf?
It does effect gathering as you will get more gems etc, the amount of ore stays the same
mystic forge isnt affected for sure, I think I transmuted around 5000 potent blood lately and there was no difference in quantity of powerful blood
I also found no evidence that quality is affected when combining items in the forge, only thing I noticed is, that 4xlvl80 items have a higher chance of a higher grade than 4xlvl71-79 items which will most likely be the same rare item but instead lvl 80
Some amount of research has been done on the GW2 subreddit regarding MF and it’s effects:
- about MF in general
- a tad more organised one
Also, MF does not effect salvaging- concluded here.
So, the cooldown for the anti-farm code is every 12 hours? And after how long have you been farming a specific mob? One hour? One and a half?
Mobs’ loot, for sure. Seems like it affects chests, too.
Hold on a second while I make this post really attention grabbing.

That’ll do.
Now if I may, if there is no cap on MF. Then what if I go over 100%? Which is totally possible.
Does that mean every drop becomes Rare/Exotic?
Northern Shiverpeaks Night Crew
Os Guild
It’s assumed that it’s multiplicative Rob. If a monster had a 1% chance to drop a rare and you killed it with 200% magic find on it now has a 3% chance for a rare.

No
MF affects the % of an item to drop
if Rares have 5% to drop and u get 100% MF, then u’ll have a 10% chance to get a rare drop
if u get 200% MF ull have 15% to get a rare drop, etc etc
but i dont think there’s a table with the % chance of drop for items so u cant really tell
My results having just built a magic find set are in line with the reddit findings that CaveSalamander linked.
Magic Find definitely makes an impact when killing mobs.
For the rest: I don’t think it has an affect.
I have no real tests to show for but to add to the “MF only alter mobs” yesterday I did Claw of Jormag 2 times same toon .. 12% MF. 1st time I got a gold medal and only blues and greens. Second time I came by almost at the end and only got a bronze medal…. lo and behold a rare.
I was trying to get my legendary precursor from the forge and combined 68 level 80 rares, so 17 attempts with 239% magic find.
I got 1 exotic in 17 attempts where most people say they are getting a 25% chance to upgrade to an exotic, (1 in 4)
——
Then after wasting all the gold I had on this I went to run CoE explorable with some friends. I still had the 30 min booster going so I decided to keep on my MF gear.
239% MF and I didn’t get one rare out of any of the 3 paths.
——
Next day I go in with 0% MF and pull out 2 rares in one path.
This is why I would like a Dev response as to How is this supposed to work? Right now we cannot even test to make sure it is working properly.
Well, your Mystic Forging was pretty much just terrible luck; I don’t think magic find affects the Forge.
it probably has an effect but i don’t notice it much (only using 5 pirates/1 traveler runes and some orange coconut thing i made and i am trying to use up) since i’m only switching to that character to hit a couple events and nodes in orr before switching back to my main. i’ll agree that the best mf is no grind. that being said, it would be nice to know solid numbers on mf nad a lot of other things in the game.

It’s a shame that MF only affects mobs drops. As a mesmer I have a lot of trouble tagging mobs during events, frequently I get almost as much loot from a chest at the end of an event chain than I do from the event itself.
