Drums are inferior than the rest :(
I agree. This item sucks. I feel more like an observer than an actual player. Unlike with the Harp and Flute, which are amazing.
I requested a refund while explaining my disappointment in this item, but I got denied:
Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team.
Purchases from the Gem Store are seldom refundable, and in this case we are not able to provide a refund of your purchase. We encourage you to exercise care when conducting all your gem transactions.
I’m really disappointed. 10 euro’s well wasted.
Sorry, but I can’t agree. I’ve tried the other instruments, but I haven’t enjoyed any of them nearly as much as the drums.
The lag with the instruments makes creating a decent-sounding song really difficult, even for people that have been practicing for a while. If you’re one of the very very few that can actually play something good on one of the many instruments with traditional controls, then kudos to you.
However, the drums lets you pick up and play something that sounds good quickly and easily. Maybe you’re too pro for that, but for people who don’t have the same musical talent and/or don’t want to dedicate the amount of time it takes to make something decent from the current instruments, it’s a great option.
Yes, you are a bit more limited in what songs you can play compared to other instruments, but the ease of use and quality of sound for improv songs easily outweighs that con for me.
Best $10 I’ve spent on the gemstore so far.
I’ll also have to disagree with OP. I think that this is the best thought out instrument of the bunch.
I have all the instruments and consider myself competent using them, so I say with confidence that in the limited time that I’ve used the drum, that this is is the most fun I’ve had with any of these items.
I’m very happy with this $10 purchase.
I’ve already posted on how much I love the drum. Perhaps coincidentally I have zero RL musical skill or sense of rhythm. Sure, I can waltz — but I have to ask “is this a waltz?” when the music starts if I don’t already know the piece. At least I can hear music, I’m not tone deaf, phew.
Anyway, I love the drum so much it’s going to become part of my main’s RP, since the LA miasma stripped his throat and he can no longer sing or whistle melodically as he’s done for years. Who needs to be able to play a song on a drum, for that matter? They’re there for a beat. Percussion isn’t a song even if it most definitely is music.
I’d say the only really missing sound from the drum, given that they used a bodhran style instrument, is the shoooshshoohshooosh of sliding the beater around on the skin instead of striking it.
OP, they’ve(Anet) stated that the drum has the potential to be upgraded later with more presets and/or possibly more sound files. Or something else. I can’t recall where the post is or most of what it was saying, but it was along those lines.
But the thing is.. there is currently enough notes on the drum. It takes a level of creativity to utilize the potential that the drum has. Take this video for example:
It’s not perfect, but its something someone came up with on the spot. The only thing I’d want added to the drum is the ability to set your BPM. If you could change how long until the loop looped, you could open up soooo much more with just those 5 notes.
It’s like complaining that the Chinese Erhu only has two strings, thus it’s less creative than a violin or standard guitar. More isn’t always better.

I just wish it was slightly louder.

You can adjust the volume of player musical instruments in the game settings.
I have a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Kudos to you. I never imagined this was a configurable option so never went looking for it.
Thanks a bunch!

I think there was a missed opportunity to make a cowbell drop on April 1st. It would have buttons for all 8 skills, just like the flute/horn/bell/etc., but they would all play the same cowbell sound.
The drums are OK. Even better if you got a syncopated group that acutely practiced, and not just beat the heck out of them. Can you say tips?
What really was annoying was when the horn first cam out and people just blared them with no melody in mind. What this boils down to is the lack of practice. I applaud the instruments, but people PLEASE practice before you unveil your hidden musician!
My favorite is the flute.
@Developers. Please add sharps and flats to the instruments….

Fondly remembers the GW1 Factions Quest.….. sigh
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
