Friendly Service Announcement, how to make a profit on the trading post
Even better, use this: http://tpcalc.com/
And stop destroying the economy with your lossy underprices that makes everybody (including you, those unaware or “success fees” ) lose gold.
Noir,
Nice link. For me though I have set up my spread sheets to do the work for me so I can track multiple things.
But I agree 100% with your comment about the economy being destroyed by people under cutting at a loss. The only solace is that eventually the people that do it will not have any gold left to screw with the market.
I read all of the posts here that cry and complain about the market of GW2. It is not rocket science. I have easily made over 200g on the trading post since launch. I have only paid $20 for gems initially and that was to purchase the extra bag slots and xp boosts. I have since picked up 8k gems from gold, not to mention crafted full exotic etc. All of this from doing nothing more than playing the markets. Heck all of my friends and guild members give me a hard time because that I basically all that I do is work the Trading Post.
Yep, but It’s getting kinda hard to do that because of said undercuts.. The prices for the materials and the selling prices of crafts are coming closer together, which nets in a major loss. It’s partly the devs fault for not advertising the transaction fee. I actually read about people asking why they got less gold than the Trading Post showed they would. This issue needs to be addressed. Maybe if people knew, this wouldn’t happen.
And the example with the bags given by the OP is a perfect one. Absolutely all the 20 slot bags on the TP sell for a major loss. There’s people crafting them (for profit – ?? ) and actually losing gold. Market needs a wake up call.
I have also a good example of ppl destroying their own money.
Since launch I was leveling jewelcrafting and always when I had crafted jewels that I didn’t need and was trying to sell on TP they were just 1 copper more than vendor price.
1 copper more than vendor price – listing fee – transaction fee = big loss for players, not only those that put up that price, but also all those that try to sell excess on TP.
For profit minimum 20% extra of the craft cost/vendor price is needed to be put.

You say you have made over 200g but without exploiting I dont get how?!
I was trying to be clever and buy cheap iron ore to make into steel and sell for more. Worked out I would still make a profit even after selling fee but didnt realise there was an initial fee too so that has killed that!
The only viable way seems to be selling crafting mats since everything craftable is worth less than the mats.
world TP and no gathering skills mean there is no demand for anything but crafting mats…
im not 80 yet so maybe im missing something with the legendary mat and the mystic forge
Delsaber,
Yes, I am saying I have made over 200g purely on the trading post without any type of exploit.
I was able to take advantage of the early launch of the trading post when there was large margins to be made on crafting materials.
I also made a very large amount of gold by making Superior Runes of the Ranger before the recipe was changed to need a lodestone. I literally made thousands of runes. I have since moved to other commodities on the market that I flip.
The key is to research the market and find items that you can make a profit on. Some items are good for a few hours and then they are not. The market is always changing.
On a different subject though I am trying to figure out what happened to a few items over the past 2 days. I have seen the market crash on some things. One in particular was selling for over 12s during the weekend and in less then 24 hours it dropped to just barely over 8s. I have my suspicions but I hope I am wrong.
I guess early stages of the market and the late release of it play a big part.
I have a lot of mats saved for my crafting skills (currently both around 290) but think I might just TP everything as doesnt seem worth levelling them atm.
To be fair although I only have around 3/4 gold I have never needed any more than that. I expected that to change when I hit 80 tonight! lol
