First off I must admit that these chests are a step in the right direction. That you will eventually get the skin you want if you get enough of these (even if you are very unlucky you can still get a skin via the trade in).

However.

Currently you can by the Wind, Sun and Lightning catcher off the TP for 9, 3, 4 gold respectively.
That comes to a total of 16 gold (around 17-18 if you add the silver).

25 chests cost 400 gems.
Opening 25 chest /= 1 skin (unless your very lucky)
400 gems = 9 and a bit gold == 1 skin of the TP

So .. why would we spend gems on RNG chests when we could get the skins of the TP? If your reply is for the head skin, take a second look at it and your non existent forehead.

After opening 2400 gems worth of chest, I received enough scraps to by 4 skins and 1 golden fortune (5 skins in total). These things also give random buffs, that are applied on opening and stack to 1 hour 30.
So opening 2400 gems worth of chests is: 6×25 = 150 buffs for 10 minutes.
150 / 4 possible buffs (example) = 37.5 of 1 buff = 375 minutes of buffs which is 6.25 hours. That is 5x the duration these things stack for. So it seems that they want you to open no more then 25 at a time, nor do they warn you otherwise.

I want some skins, I am not going to carry these things around with me and open 150 chests over then next few days to get the skins. Why do I not have a stack of 6 hours (they are random so could be more of one or another) of each buff? Or the better thing, a 10 minute consumable that I could use when I wanted to.

Also why can you buy the skins on the TP, each cheaper then 1 stack of 25 chests?

Please remove RNG from the game, and sell the skins on the gem shop for 400 gems, or a pack of all for 1000 (all 3).

And for god sake, make it so getting a skin of the gem shop unlocks it for PvP as well.

For those who haven’t got the skins (back skins) yet:
Trade gems for gold then buy the skins through the Trading Post, you will be much happier.
If you do buy these gemshop items, 1hour and a half, don’t open more then 25 chests each hour and a half.

They’re for players who don’t want to farm the same chest in PvE as they have a small drop rate.

These chests are perfect for their needs. Most players who want the skins (and don’t buy to win[looks]) will get nearly all their scraps from chests in the open world and may, at the very end, give in and buy a few chests.

Thanks for this, I got all three for 14g via buy orders tonight. If I read this tomorrow I would have wasted my scraps on only 1, luckily I only have ~110 from just open world drops. Hopefully I can get enough for a helm by the end of it all or if I get a golden ticket i’ll just buy a bunch of recipe boxes.

Mhm, and it is better (unless you have these real world scraps) to use those gems on gold to buy the skins off the tp, then to use the gems to buy the chests and RNG it up

The skins are not the only thing you can get from the fortunes. There are also the Celestial recipes, and even if people don’t think the Celestial gear is good, some people still like to collect.

Eventually this gem><gold thing will force a.net to come up with a properly working RNG box system. They’re well on their way since these fortunues at least have incremental non-luck coupled with the golden ribbons.

Still doesn’t look very good.
120 gems gets you around 2g 90s.
With that you should be able buy 5 recipe sheets that you need.

5 fortunes will probably get you a Celestial Intricate Gossamer Insignia, Celectial Orichalcum Imbued Inscription, Exquisite Quartz Crystal and them duplicates of one or more of those.

The helms are account bound as far as I remember; many people would want those as well.

I was very fortunate for these. I just started a new job and I also need to balance out classes with that, leaving me a lot less play time in GW2.
I noticed the Wind Aspect Helm and really wanted it, but I don’t have the time to farm baskets every map every day for what could probably take a week. I tossed $10 in, grabbed 50 Kite Fortunes, and got about 160 or so Fortune Scraps. Now that leaves me with a much easier amount to find (which means I don’t need to spend all my play time doing baskets) for the duration of the event.

So I’d say that’s the point of them. If you really want one of the Helms and you don’t have a whole lot of spare time to farm Baskets, buy them up. I’d say this is the greatest way so far handling these kinds of rewards, I really hope we see more of this system.

I, for one, appreciated them not putting the items in a freaking RNG box so I spent a few dollars to buy the gem store kite fortunes. Put the Fortune Scraps from those with the ones ingame and bought a backpiece. If people want to encourage ANet to not use the RNG boxes, they should spend money when ANet offers stuff like this.

my goodness theres no end to the qq first people complain about RNG with the previous skins and now we see a perfect implementation of skin rewards that can be farmed and bought you complain -_-
