Gem Store: one-use only & RNG
I agree with you, I would rather be able to pay a fixed amount for the new fire skins for example even if it is higher than to “gamble” my money away on some stupid pixel RNG.
This kind of mentality is what is going to make me put my wallet away and stop spending. Don’t take us for fools and we will keep investing in your products.
You completely forget about gold to gem trade…

I agree. This is one of my least favorite aspects of the game. It feels “wrong”. I defend Anet on a whole lot of points, but how they offer RNG stuff, particularly stuff that’s account/character bound is just terrible.

because it sells

I know it sells. That doesn’t make it right. It’s a bad look for the company, in my opinion. They’ve done so much else right, that just makes me quite annoyed. I don’t love the RNG in game either, as with precursors (even though one dropped for me), but in game I have more trouble complaining about it. RNG for cash rubs me the wrong way.
I don’t enjoy gambling with real money in the real world, and the examples you give totally equate to gambling. Throwing real money at video game roulette is not going to work with me, I’d rather pay 2-3x and make sure I get it what I want, even if there is a chance to get what I want gambling for a fraction of the cost. The end result is me spending $0 instead of $10.

I think about it a lot, myself. Especially when it comes to things like the skins from Vigil/Priory/Whispers. I can only spend gold on them, not an earned currency like Karma. How am I supposed to even have a “cosmetic grind” when you have so many skins that I could more quickly acquire with my credit card?

I hate to say that, but he got a point… If ANet keep adding that RNG crap is because people is buying it, so, whatever they are doing, they are doing it right.
If they weren’t gaining on that, be sure they would try another way to spill your money.

Is it bad for a company to want to make a profit? That’s business whether you like it or not. GW2 does not have a subscription model so it needs a way to generate multiple purchases from it’s customers.

You do realize that you don’t have to buy it right? So the question now is “Is it wrong to complain that you pay for it when it’s completely optional?”

I can see a reply along the lines of:
“Okay Jimmy. Here’s my creditcard. Now go have fun with your imaginary friends in that magic box you call a computer.”
