After reading many complaints about sales on this website, I am just going to state the primary rule for spending gems. This rule is also painfully obvious so I wonder how so many people seem to have problems figuring it out but ye …

Rule #1: Wait for sales

Two subrules to optimize this rule:
Rule #1.1: Everything goes on sale sooner rather than later
Rule #1.2: Keep a healthy supply of gems to take advantage of sales.

The only advantage being, you don’t know when something will be on sale. If you can’t wait, you should accept the possibility that a sale for this particular item starts the next week.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

when I started, gems were like 30s per 100. I knew they would go up and the best idea would be to buy a lot then. however, I also knew that if I went bankrupt buying lots of gems then, I would get more gold slower, restricting how many gems /and/ gear I could get in the future.
I decided to just buy the gems I need when I need them and could afford it. Now, 100 gems costs me like 1% of my net worth, while back then, 100 gems was like 10-20% of my net worth.
If I had known for certain what the price of gems are now back then, I would not of done anything different.
