Getting Ruined logs with infinite use Axe
Question: are you an engineer, and are you swapping kits during the chopping?
That is (or was?) a bug with kits.

It’s also good to mention, that i’m not interrupted in any way when this happens.
Most of the times i get 1 intended log an 2 or 3 ruined logs. It’s really weird.
If you are in combat, even if you don’t get hit, all levels of harvesting tools have a chance to produce ruined materials.
I was having the same issue but found it resolved by making sure I was out of combat before starting to harvest.
How about sigils or other things that are on a timer to do something? Maybe that effects harvesting if it happens just then.
I believe there are only 2 ways of failing. Wrong lvl tool for harvesting and while being in combat. Probably a bug?
I harvested many times while being attacked and never seen ruined materials. I have even stopped and went into battle and went back to mining. I have never seen ruined materials using any of the permanent harvesting tools.
Perhaps, on a similar note to the kit swapping bug, you exit stealth while chopping? The problem might be related to skills changing, which Thief does when destealthing due to the stealth skill.

With the recent rise in prices for Orichalcum and Ancient Lumber, I was a bit disappointed to see this old bug raising it’s head. This post is here to serve a dual purpose. To shed more light on a bug that has long been reported and to help spread awareness to the player base on how to avoid it.
The issue that most find is that they will start harvesting a high value node in Orr and be partway through it while under attack and suddenly they go from receiving good product to ruined chunks/fiber of some sort. Because of how Orichalcum and Ancient Lumber is gathered, 3 per cycle, you will notice it far more with these nodes.
What has happened is that some skill or trait has gone from passive to active while you were harvesting and this has caused you to produce ruined product. For example, when a Ranger has the trait, Shared Anguish (Wilderness Survival III) and gets hit with a daze while harvesting, any immediate product will be ruined. A second example would be on the Elementalist skill Arcane Shield. If the shield takes 3 hits, it explodes. Should the shield take 3 hits while you are harvesting, after it explodes, subsequent product will be ruined. This is very easy to reproduce and should be examined by Anet.
Before you farm Orr, I’d suggest doing a quick once over on your traits and skills to prevent something like the Guardian’s Zealot Speed (Zeal +5 points in) from preventing you from bringing in as many high value goods as you should have.
Thanks for the info Astral. I don’t use the traits that you mentioned and would be why I haven’t experienced this bug.
I can additionally attest that the ONLY time I’ve ever gotten ruined material (well, besides forgetting to upgrade tools as a lowbie) on Ori/Ancient Wood is when a passive Trait or Rune Bonus activates, such as Engineer drinking Elixir B at 75% health or 4 piece Superior Rune of the Pack.
It happens when you do anything that would count as an attack while harvesting. Any instant skills (even just a blind) or arcane shield’s explosion will count and ruin any mats. Perhaps retaliation will do it while you’re being attacked. Maybe one of the “5% chance on hit” runes. Could be a trait.
It’s definitely not a random chance, as I have learned the things in my build that used to cause it and stopped doing them, and have never had a ruined mat since.
Kill the mobs you’ve agro’d before you start gathering. Also, don’t pull mobs on to others who are already gathering. I lost 3 ancient just today because some idiot rolled up with 2 ice elementals after I had cleared the area around the node.
