They can’t, but people frequently mistake the performance of exchanges as somehow actually being related to economic performance.
The current market panic is amusing (I say as someone who has only liquid assets at the moment). From my position (as I don’t have the insider data Mr. Smith has) it appears that prices spiked leading up to the patch in anticipation of new recipes and other changes causing an increase in demand, but now those investors are panic selling as the Orr drops/moldy bags changes have actually caused an increase in supply.
It’s worth pointing out that not all prices are falling. The change to the infamous Southsun rich ori node has caused a spike in Orichalcum prices. The improvements to the visual effects of the legendary mace has caused its precursor price to increase by 300% (that’s a nearly 300g increase over the past 4-6 hours). I’m sure there are plenty of other items that have gone up as well.
