Gold to gem Rate- to high?
I think the transfer rate is fine as it is.
As more players want new things available in the Gem Store, they convert their in-game gold to Gems and the price goes up. The reason they do this is because they’d rather part with their in-game money than their real money. The value of the items in the Gem Store doesn’t change unless they go on sale. When things go on sale, the conversion increases yet again…and more complaints arise.
What players don’t realize is that the conversion of gold to Gems is a convenience that ArenaNet added into GW2 so that you didn’t HAVE to buy things from the Gem Store with real money. As the conversion rate gets “worse and worse”, more players will turn to using real money to buy Gems instead of converting their gold to do so. That’s what ArenaNet wants anyway. They don’t care about your gold, they care about your money.
Btw….those sales….they are really only meant for the players that use real money to buy Gems….not the ones that convert gold to Gems.
Logic will never win an argument on the forums…..only a sense of entitlement will.
The rate is determined by how much gold has been converted to Gems and how many Gems have been converted to gold since the game launched.
The Gem store sales and the fuse skin rush ended up with a lot of players converting their gold into gems which in turn spikes the price up.
There hasn’t been much of a spike since the SAB started up. Actually it’s been pretty flat on average.
RIP City of Heroes
Wait till the event finishes, it should come down a bit, I bought 2 character slots and they cost me around 30 gold a month or so ago.
As someone who doesn’t have a lot of disposable income atm (I’m between contracts) I’ve been buying quite a few gems with gold lately. The exchange rate can fluctuate a lot depending on sales and the introduction of new items so I started buying 100 gems every day that I play.
I began doing this at the beginning of the March sales so that I would have gems available if an item I wanted went on sale without having to worry too much about spikes in the exchange rate. At current prices, this strategy means I have to make about 2g 30s a day to buy my daily allotment of gems which is more palatable than forking out larger sums of gold whenever I want something from the gem store.

Only problem is that some of the things in the gem store are needed for normal gameplay (if anyone can play with the basic 30 slot bank i take my hat off to them)

Your statement is false. There is nothing in the Gem Store at the moment that is needed, or required, to play. Certain items in the Gem Store do make playing the game more convenient….such as bank tabs and bag slots, but they are not required. “Needed” in your statement is an opinion, not a fact.

The gem/gold rate floats because it’s based on players’ supply and demand. It is not directly controlled by Anet because it is a secondary market. The primary market is gem/real money and the rate is already fixed by them.
I haven’t used the gem store at all and I have no problem with the bank slots given. They have already given you slots for crafting mats so most of what I would horde is already taken care of. If you do need room, then start a guild by yourself and get a guild bank.

Gem rates are only high due to play demand, as kokocabana stated. The secret to maximizing your exchanges is to watch the rate movements between events, and grab at the lowest comfortable price.

If you want to argue that inventory space is not something that should be charged piecemeal, I’ll agree with you. But between the collections tab, 500 inventory among characters, stack sizes of 250, a 30 slot bank, and a 50+ personal guild bank, all without buying a single gem and either given to you or easily earned, it’s a stretch to say that more space is needed for normal gameplay.

Quite easily, with more than ample spaces to spare.
Indeed, i havent bought a single gem and so far ive bought like 150k different bags to flip/open, got my legendary and gathered different sets.
All that, with 5 char slots (i got actually only 3 80s of which i main one) and 30 bank slots lol. My bank looks a lot like Grimshetera above me, just with less mats and relics
