After yesterday’s patch, Gossamer Scrap has risen by 100% from 4s to 8s

This is largely due to the new item codes for the Wupwup Ascended Armor that have been datamined. People are speculating that ascended armor will be coming very soon.

I’ve been a large proponent of speculating in Gossamer ever since it bottomed at 1.5-2s, so it’s nice to see it rise. I invested 8000 scraps at a conservative price of 4s each (320G). It’s been doubled now to <$640G.

I’m thinking though that there is still a good chance that gossamer scrap can rise even further. For one, the price right now is based on unknown but likely information on the usage of gossamer scrap. On patch day I could see the price rise even further when we get to see the exact requirements for gossamer. I could see it rise even further to prices similar to ancient wood at around +12S (although the cheap price of silk scraps may make it profitable to promote for a time, thus depressing price a bit).

Not to mention that right now we only have one set for armor, and based on a small vocal sample size, people don’t find it exactly appealing. What if Anet comes out, on patch day, with half a dozen more sets? The demand for gossamer could be astronomical.

I bought 10k gossamer and 10k leather at 75c and 12c each, waiting for patch day to unload and make over 1000g profit for a 100g investment.

First of all you promote bolt of silk. Not silk scrap. Since that is more efficient.

If you want to profit. At the current bolt of silk price which is 38 copper you need to make around 20. But if you want it for personal use, you just need less than 17. If you tried promotion yourself. The average is actually more than 17. If you promote more than 10 times, you pretty much always get more than 17.

But why isn’t people doing it for profit? because you need to pay tax. and inherantly 1 skill point is worth 20 silver. Since there are a bunch of thing you can use your skill point to profit for 20 silver. And it really takes all day crafting a bunch of silk scrap to bolt.

That being said, it still dont’ make sense people’ll buy gossamer scrap for more than 5 silver when they can promote bolt of gossamer for 10 silver.

You really need to wait for “patch day” and hope people are clueless enough. But make sure to sell fast at patch day.

mithril ore price isn’t going up and you can use it to gamble precursor. So I doubt silk will stay up that much.

If only people don’t care about virtual gold as much as real life cash, I can be rich in real life.

Wish I would have invested more in those, although I suspect when the patch actually hits it won’t increase as much as the others. Wool and linen scraps and thin leather sections are getting a nice increase, so I’m glad I packed all my mules full of those. I’m thinking those will have the largest percent increase come patch day.

Also, ectos/crystalline dust will probably spike a lot (at least 1.5x imo) with patch, making gossamer bolt promotion less worthwhile.

Assuming, of course, that armor follows the same model as weapons. They may not be crafted at all. Then we’ll see a crash.

Well… Since I’m not much of a tradingpost gambler and i didn’t know about the great rise of gossamer before they were already at 4s, I invested about 200g into silkscrap+bolts of silk when they still were at 8c &16c and left them in the grab section of my bltc.
I expect to get 1000g-2000g out of it.

(For those who dont understand already, here’s the thoughtprocess:
-How far up will gossamerscrap go? Looking at ancient wood and oricalcum it could go up a lot, to similar hights of 10s a piece, but propably more.
-The promotion exists, therefore the price between gossamer scrap and silk scrap is linked.
-If gossamer scrap is bound to go up in price, so is silk scrap.
-Will they both go up the same percentage? No…

Here’s why:
Gossamer was at 1s. Promotion was very unsatisfying you invested 250×16c(bolt of silk) + 5×1500c(cristalline dust) + skillpoint to get ~17×200c(bolt of gossamer), as you can see. The silk was too expensive(vendorprice) and the gossamer too cheap.
Then gossamer went up to 400c and stayed there. why? The promotion got efficient
-> 250×16c + 800+5x1500c = 12300 which is only a bit less then 17×800

Now if all of our predictions were true and gossamer scrap will go up to about 10s a piece, then even if cristalline dust goes up too (let’s say to 20s) the Silk will still go up to 44c to make the promotion even.
So even if you were late to the gossamerscrap party like me. You should’ve still been able to make a 8c to 44c. = mimimum factor 5 profit while if you’ve invested all your gold in gossamer at 4s, you will only make a factor 2.5 profit when it rises to 10s)

Tl;dr:
For each % gossamer scrap price rises, % silk scrap price rises harder, because their price is linked.
The only reason their price didn’t flux with eachother before was thanks to the hard cap of the vendor price.

The inventory space per gold/profit is much better with gossamer than silk, for those that have very diversified investments like me.

When listing at 21c, you make 17.85c from each sale, so less than 10c profit per scrap.

Thats 25 silver profit per stack that you have to buy and relist, thats actually not much for the clicking involved. At least you didnt waste your skillpoints on this mediocre ROI.

Isn’t this rather risky speculation though? (Mostly in regards to people speculating on Hardened Leather.) Ascended weapons don’t use Ancient/Ori mats (aside from the Orichalcum inscription), so why would Ascended armor use T6 mats as opposed to combining lower tier mats? Or are people banking on the idea that since you need 6 Gossamer inscriptions, across all 3 armor-crafting professions, the demand on Gossamer will be a lot higher?

You will make profit, and it may raise more but only time will tell. Unlike the weapon update the mostly used only wood and ore, armors will be using all types of resources so I don’t see as dramatic rises overall like with Ancient Wood the first week.

Wood was used in all 3. Cloth will be used in all 3… and in greater quantities as there are more items to make. It’s also harder to obtain cloth than it is wood. There are NO cloth nodes to go farm quickly. You need to kill things, then salvage.

So considering all of that… yes, it’ll certainly go up more. Not as much as I think cotton will though (percentage wise) since you can get silk/goss and convert silk to goss far more easily than farm up cotton at 80. Seriously… almost no one is going to go try to farm for bags and salvage items for wool/cotton/linen…. and cotton is by far the hardest to get.

8000 scraps isn’t that much to sell when the demand is going to go nuts but the supply will remain the same. That’s only 32 stacks of scraps (not 80) or 16 stacks of bolts (how they’ll wind up being used by players after processing).

I think I’m pretty well known around here to have some credibility. I’m also very open about my investments and make disclosures when needed.

The BLTC forum represents a tiny portion of the playerbase (though I would say a large % of the wealthiest players in game do browse it) so I don’t have any problem sharing investment tips. Sure, disclosing my investments could lead to price increases which would benefit me, but I’m not investing for a miniscule increase and it’s not my objective to get rich off pump-and-dump schemes.

Whats wrong with making statements on the forums in order to raise your profits?
Every day multiple topics are created on the forums about items that are in high demand and people dont want to pay the high prices on TP, telling Anet to adjust the supply of those items, effectively marketing to devalue such items.

Be it rich ori or ancient wood nodes, cloth nodes in anticipation of ascended armor crafting, Lodestones or Silver Doubloons.

@vol I get the first 3 on the list (as I’ve been trying to hit up lodestons/cores a lot) but copper doubloons? What’s the rational there?

But yes gossamer prices going up was a given. I invested very heavily in that as well.

80 stacks is slightly more than 8k units. And I’m already counting profits at current prices and as numerous other people said, the situation atm is akin to the ancient wood one and arguably will be even worse supply wise later, so I’m fine. Just need to be sure to sell at the right time, sold my ancient wood too early, never expected it to shoot that high up (15s a piece was it?).

@Volt; No need to go all defensive, it’s mostly friendly banter in order to keep the thread alive, never doubted the truth of your words. I personally find you a very sly and intelligent person worth listening to.

Your “proof” indicates that there was a sudden demand increase and drain to the supply. That is it. Guess what happens when demand increases and supply is drained? No, not manipulation, price increase.

Basic economics.

Now, let’s say the there is a sudden demand increase, supply drain, and then sudden supply replenished along with a huge price increase for absolutely no reason. That’s market manipulation.

Even if silk scrap price raise to 25 copper, you can still get gossamer for 5 silver. Do people not know what promotion is? And use promotion on bolt of silk. I’m quite speechless.

It is still a gamble to promote silk to gossamer. I wrote a little script to check for item promotion and this is the output for silk to gossamer promotion right now:

Cost of promotion: 9770 Number of promoted items to be generated for promotion t
o be worth it: 17.140350877192983

You need to get at least 18 gossamer scrap for it to be worth it and that is not counting the worth of any skill points used in the process. Meaning it is possibly profitable but still a gamble.

IF (and this is a big IF), you see that there are 35k of an item available for sale. And if you buy 10K of them, causing the price to rise say 30%. and you come and post on the forums about the “sudden rise” in the item on the TP. That is manipulation.

Except the prices had already skyrocketed to what it is now BEFORE Vol made this thread. There was no sudden rise due to market manipulation. There was a rise because Ascended armor crafting! And although I can’t speak for Vol, I’m willing to say he still has his stock of Gossamer.

Basic economics.

Now, let’s say the there is a sudden demand increase, supply drain, and then sudden supply replenished along with a huge price increase for absolutely no reason. That’s market manipulation.
