Gossamer --> silk recipe
In general I do think it would be nice to have demotion recipes, kind of like how we can currently do that with fractal essences.
What would you find to be a fair ratio? I think promoting 250 silk bolts gives 10-30 gossamer bolts? So should the demotion of 30 gossamer give 250 silk bolts?

To find the right balance would take quite a lot of time, but I would say that the system shouldn’t be that easily. There should be a ‘fee’ involved, such as including philosopher stones or t5 dust.

Of course there need to be more ingredients, but something has to be done, because gossamer is getting cheaper than silk and linen which does not make sense from a quality standpoint.

Well to be fair, why should the value of silk be depressed? For the longest time silk was depressed and now it actually has value.
If anything, gossamer value should be increased.
Well ascended armor should have boosted the value, but it looks like only the speculation in advance boosted it and now it goes back to its original price. It took me a little more than 2 stacks to max all 3 armor professions, not a lot :/
Silk’s not going back to its original price — that was 1 c over vendor. I just tried to buy 210 scraps at 1s 18c but by the time I clicked Buy they were gone and it stayed up at 1s 37kittenil I gave up and decided to farm the stuff during world exploration.

It probably won’t ever go down to vendor price again. However, what you are seeing now is the mad rush for people to get their ascended armor set done. Where the final balance comes, I don’t know. All depends on how much is being hoarded again. I think Silk is one of the most abundant items in game next to mithril. When it was cheap, I was getting 10k buy orders filled in like a couple minutes, so I know there is a LOT of it being generated which means after the people rushing to get ascended are done, the price will come back down.
I don’t think there will be too many people crafting multiple sets of ascended armor, so once that first group of people finish, it should start to settle.
there is no “mad rush” for ascended armor, I dont know anyone in my friendlist who is rushing it, personally I am even skipping it if i dont get it as a drop

There always is a mad rush for new stuff in anything in life, not just limited to video games. You can bet there are many people crafting armor right now. That is evident in the prices of materials at the moment. Everyone wants the new shiny object of desire, you are just seeing the opposite from a small sample size of people in your guild.
I do, however like your suggestion of demoting mats. Although, gossamer is way more expensive than silk already so more than likely it would be no where near profitable to demote.
ideally it would be the opposite recipe of silk —> gossamer, so you would get 250 silk bolts for about 30 gossamer bolts, making it profitable

Until recently there was a huge surplus of silk and it was nearly worthless. Do you really think they want to go back to that just so a few people can make money for a week?

That’s because people stocked up for a very long time in advance to the update, not very much was needed and a lot of people were turning all the silk in the game into gossamer, the balance may be okay in the future once the surplus is gone and people calm down on ascended armor like they have with weapons.
Well currently I have more gossamer than silk so I would love to convert some of my now almost worthless gossamer to silk so I can use it for damask bolts.

And while we are on it, i currently have more ugly wool sweaters than toxic spore samples, where can I exchange them so i dont have to spend 10g on a toxic recipe?

way to miss the point. silk can be turned into gossamer, but can toxic spore samples be turned into ugly wool sweaters? no

Why would anybody want to turn his toxic spore samples into ugly wool sweaters?
I am quite sure the drop ratio between silk and gossamer before the patch was quite in line with the general demand of those right now. Its not Anets fault that people chose to waste their skill points on t5 promotion to make a quick buck disregarding their own demand.

I am sure no sane person expected (and if otherwise I would accuse him of insider trading) the silk part suddenly to require 300 instead of 100 scraps per day, so its anet fault to suddenly artifically raise the silk scrap demand.
First 3 scraps instead of 2 per bolt then 100 instead of 50 bolts per damask.
Farming 100 scraps per day was very manageable to me, 300 is a whole different story.

So what happened to the 6k silk scraps you farmed in oct/now? Those plus the 4k scraps you gonna farm until mid January should have been enough to cover your demand, regardless of if you refined before or after the change.

I vendored some of the silk to save bank space because it was worthless back then
I havn’t play for a few month. Quite supprising to see the market change.
Wonder if I should bother installing GW2 just to sell the silk scrap.
