Guild Wars 2 "Forbes"
Upon the latest Forbes’ list of the wealthiest people on the planet, I though it’d be funny if our beloved (or “not so beloved” by some) economist John Smith do some sort of top 50 list which would show the wealthiness of the richest people in the game.
Obviously, he would need to hide the player’s names and use their server name, or something like that, instead. What do you people think about that?
While I think it would be interesting to find out how much the richest people have, it would have to be based solely on how much gold they have in their account.
Also….I think we’d find a LOT of people complaining about them being botters, hackers, cheaters, gold sellers, etc.
It’s probably just best not to provide that information to an already entitlement-minded crowd.
Logic will never win an argument on the forums…..only a sense of entitlement will.
I’d rather see a reprise of the State of the Economy that John did shortly after release.
I really don’t find stories about the richest people in a virtual economy that compelling. How are you going to describe the great achievements in game? “Early in his 40s, IPwnU was grinding totems. A lucky market fluctuation led to his first windfall and he started investing in Ectos.” Yawn.
I do like statistics and data analysis though.
He might start thinking he knows what’s right for you.

It seems like a terribad idea; those people’d get spammed to death with everything from accusations of cheating to beggers asking for gold.

The OP stated that their names would be kept private.
It would just be a list….with possibly a server they’re on.

I would rather they take that list, look at the IP address of those richest folks, and than check those IP’s for second and third accounts (mostly looking for their bots).
While I realize it is entirely possible to make large sums of money in mmo’s legally, I see so many bots/hacks that it makes me wonder. I wish the system had a built in way to check, but sadly the only way they seem to know is by players reporting.

I agree with everyone else: 30 of those 50 will be gold sellers with names like “ixusyenp4837”
It would be interesting to see a top-50 list of legitimate players, with maybe just the first and last letter of their name and their server. give you an idea of how poor you are. but that list would have to exclude all the gold sellers, and if they knew how to do that, they would of banned them already.

I have 276,809,301 gold
Probably not the best idea people are extremly jealous and would start accusing them for having much gold.
I’d love to see it though xD Would be really interesting how much someone’s actually able to obtain O.o
At previous: screenshot or it didn’t happen^^
This does nothing for Arenanet but open them for criticism. People would see the top 50 players would be suspicious gold buyers/bots, and then people here would complain that they’re not doing a good enough job combating it.
When in reality, you can’t just ban someone for having a lot of gold, or have a suspicious name.
I always laugh when reports from forbes or bloomberg list the wealthiest individuals, and then somehow portray them as bad or greedy people.

I honestly don’t think they have the resources to do this anyway
I firmly believe that they can have inisghts on about almost evverything in the game. Vranted i’ve got no where near the programming skills that are required but i still suppose that they are able to see every outgoing bit of data. Shouldn’t be a problem for them.

Yeah for a modern company, especially with their own economist, they should have as much raw information available in their database
Once you get data into excel, you can pretty much organize the data in anyway you want to present
I work in retail analysis and we have several hundreds of fields that we can organize data on, including:
-day/week/month/year sold
-all metrics including sales, inventory, orders, GP
-store sales, color, sizes, old/new prices
-item descriptions, categories
so I’m pretty sure they have the same reports to run for GW2, which would include:
-items created, destroyed and transferred by character
-selling price of item on outpost
-time of day
-current gold on hand

you don’t even have to have excel. depends how they save it, but the player data is likely in a database for easy access, in which case all you have to do is call it with a cleverly worded function.
usually it might be “return all_data where player_id=your_character’s_id”, but for this it would be a bit more complicated: “return player_name,player_gold_in_hand,player_gold_in_bank order by player_gold_in_hand+player_gold_in_bank, descending”, then just display the first 50 records.
they do the similar when you do a TP search and sort by price. it would just be with player data instead of TP data.

Lol, I’ve forgotten how good it was to be innocent… haaa… Good times… Good ol’ times…
The player who put Eternity on TP has 3500 gold.
What we need is
FORBES
gw2
five gems a month you recive the latest in articles on Tyrias richest( how i made my fortune in chocolate) , holiday destinations (Kunar on 1000g a day) and tips on items to watch on the TP ( when to buy ectos and why )
It would be a meaningless list. None of the top 50 wealthiest people would have a substantial amount of their wealth in actual gold. It would be almost all in investments and trades. Which is why they are the 50 richest and not you lol.
