Here is why Guild Wars 2 needs Mounts
So you just buy a mount in the gem store and fly to the end of all jumping puzzles?
Sounds like a great and well thought out idea that nobody had before you.

Just about all MMOs have mounts.
However, breeding and customizing mounts with crafted armor and dye are features that would be pretty unique.
Also cheating to fly across puzzles with mounts would be another great perk of having a mount. As a kid I used to like platform games, but just don’t care for them much anymore.

So its basically paying for cheating? You are trolling right?
And as soon as mounts buff you in any way, Anet has to rebalance their whole pve content.

And as soon as mounts buff you in any way, Anet has to rebalance their whole pve content.
They would not render anything useless, because flying mounts would be rare to begin with.
They would for a while be a trophy for the end game player, an exclusive item unlocked through hard achievements or through gems.
And as for being buffed with a mount unbalancing anything. You can already get buffs through food, weapon procs, and through self buffs, etc to begin with.
It really isn’t that hard to get yourself buffed in some sort of way. One buff from a player who was able to unlock or buy a mount probably isn’t going to make the game a lot easier than it already is.
But will mounts make the game more fun? Yes.
“So its basically paying for cheating? You are trolling right?

I think you’re being overly negative/trolling yourself.
In World of Warcraft flying mounts do not break the game. Chill out, internet warrior.
Yes, you can get buffs via food and/or skills.
But the game is balanced around that.
Adding a completely new source of buffs would require quite a bit of rebalancing and would most likely end up with people without months being at a disadvantage due to buffs being nerfed in favor of another source from the mounts.

There is always a way to incorporate a new useful buff without tearing all the others down. Really not that difficult, it’s just a matter of being creative and attentive to what there already is.
Also mounts would not need to buff you if it actually upset gameplay balance.
Even a speed buff and the ability to fly would be pretty useful.
But more so than actually being useful (which flying mounts would be), they’re awesome to have and look at (and would be even better with customization).

They can’t attack you if you’re flying too high. They can attack you on the ground. But also, you cannot engage in combat with mounts.

When you engage in combat you automatically dismount and you keep the buff.
The buff is just a suggestion, but really not the point of mounts. The point of mounts are that they add a lot to MMOs and can really be expanded on in a game as customizable as GW2.

I honestly dont see what mounts would add to GW2. We have waypoints for fast travel, buffing you more than 33% Swiftness would imbalance the game, making them fly would make a joke out of jumping puzzles.
If you desperately want to prance around on a mount and customize it with dyes, maybe GW2 isnt the right game for you.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
In Aion there were areas you could glide, areas where you could fly, and areas where you couldn’t do both. If you’re concerned it affects jumping puzzles: it won’t. You just code the area so that you’re automatically dismounted.
I like the idea. I know it’s an old idea. But it’s not a bad one.

I like GW2, and I see that it’s trying to push the envelope and improve on the MMO genre.
With that in mind, I have actually played several MMOs besides GW2, and I do believe that possibly the best step for GW2 to take to increase its mass appeal and to offer virtual merchandise that will sell well is to add customizable mounts, that are also earned throughout the game.

played gw2 for a long time, but tbh, i would love to ride some really nice mount (not flying mounts, not with buffs, thats really bad idea) if some mount can give me only 35%-40% movement speed, i would buy it anyway, would pay for it 100g+ just for some riding skill nah ^^ BUT! Can not be used in dungeons, fractals, WvW, Spvp / only in spvp mists
I’d like to fly a baby jormag. I’ll be good to it, I swear. It won’t eat Tyria later.
And I want an flying albino Dolyak and I’ll call him Appa …
No need for mounts with a waypoint system. Improved speed in uncovering maps would mean faster leveling through exploration XP.
There is no flight in this game (no plummeting doesn’t count) so adding it may cause issues with the game engine. Plus it reduces exploration risk to zero flying over critter filled landscapes.
It’s advantages are too great at any price. Offering one seriously closes the gap of Pay to Win class of items.
The only way to offer one is 1) no speed advantage like the broom and drill and 2) it doesn’t fly. But then your pretty critter ends up walking everywhere, dismounting you at every encounter forcing you to summon it back. I don’t know about you but there is rarely a minute of non-combat while exploring in this game.
RIP City of Heroes
Why Appa? And we all know dolyaks can’t fly.
Faster exploration would be fantastic. We’ll have new legendaries soon, we’ll need all the gifts of exploration we can get.
In SWTOR, you would be dismounted if a mob or environmental thing hit you too hard. It can easily be done. Faster exploration would certainly beat running champ trains for skill points. Bring it on. It would certainly up the pace of WvW by a lot, all that running is boring.

I hate it when people compare these 2 games, in my opinion world of warcraft was/is a piece of crap. Twice in this short thread you mentioned the game so I think this person is right when he says:

OP is definitely stuck in the wrong game.
I certainly would rather pay the odd silver for a wp now and then rather than spend a 1 time huge purchase price on a mount and still take a lot longer to get where i wanna be.
Maybe its me but out of all the MMO’s i have played i have always hated the idea of jumping on the back of an overgrown pet saying “look at me”.
Bring it on. It would certainly up the pace of WvW by a lot, all that running is boring.
yes it would be alot quicker, to jump on ur mesmer then jump on ur mount and then fly over garri wall and portal everyone in that doesn’t have a mount. hell what would be the point in upgrading anything since everything will flip the second the timer has gone on lord.

I just fail to see the neccessity of mounts in GW2:
We have faster transport with waypoints and the maps arent that big that you cant cross any of them in a matter of minutes.
Making them customizable, possibly including crafting armor for them and breeding will most certainly include some kind of stats related to them which makes rebalancing pve neccessary.
If they would introduce mounts, I would expect some kind of functionality behind them, except being a dress up doll.
I agree that mounts make sense in other mmos, like lotro, where long distances have to be covered on a general basis and the introduction of mounted combat was story driven when they expanded into Rohan.
It just doesnt make sense in GW2.

mounts are for little girls
i am happy that gw2 doesnt have that childish kitten
This has to be a troll thread. I refuse to accept otherwise.
Seeing Anet only wants to do horizontal progression they wont create more items that give you advantages over others. Best you can hope for is a cosmetic mount that runs at your speed and looks kitten (maybe), could be buffed by stuff like swiftness ofcourse.
Or they will just say no by continuing with past practise of completely ignoring all threads dealing with mounts.
or only allow ground mounts that are only allowed in the open world and disabled in all instances and JP’s…..
I’ve always been pro for Mounts in this game. It would make exploring much more appealing then WPing from place to place, and the only time you’d explore the land is for the Gift of Exploration.
As for flying Mounts people overreact that you’d be able to cheat… Look at the FLying Broom, you can’t fly to the end of the JP, it’s still limited by the edge and basically you’d have to jump with it to jump over an obsticle.
Flying mounts can still be related to Hovering Mounts You know nothing like 10 feet in the air but just hovering over a ground, like a Baby Dragon or some high-tech asura thing, or some metalic hoverboard for Charrs, etc..
Also, having race-specific mounts would make things easier, especially for the Charrs

ANet will not add mounts because ppl will be just simply running from one point to the other without exploring the maps properly.
…oh wait, they added waypoints.
Hello, mounts thread number 248975283475187519.
Mounts are juvenile.
Clearly, no amount of logic will get through—the pro-mounts brigade would scream “MOUNTS!!” even if it meant destroying the game. They wouldn’t care as long as they had their neon bee-dog-dragon-pony to ride.
No doubt, 5 years from now, when mounts still haven’t been implemented, the pro-mounts brigade will still be filling up the forums with this nonsense.
I say no to Mounts, I say no to Mounts especially in BLTP, I say no to mounts flying.
Anet/NCSoft has games for those who want to do these things from Lineage to Aion.
We don’t need them, we don’t want them, and a good many of us are sick and kitten tired of hearing about them.
my opinion
I would love more small scale cosmetic “mounts”
Like the Sonic Tunneler or the flying Broomstick
Except they should make Mursaat Feathers where it’s on your back, and causes you to have a cosmetic effect of levitation like the gw1 Mursaat. shouldn’t do any flying, but just a cosmetic levitation effect
I’m usually typing on my phone

You are dismounted only if you cross the threshold of receiving X amount of damage (which is low, but you can take 2 or 3 mob hits). And yea it’s simply a glorified hovercraft, that’s the idea. Except that it looks like a dragon or raptor or [insert animal].
I should add I would be in favor only if it doesn’t eat server memory space too much.
How about we make mounts cosmetic only. Flying mounts can just hover over the ground, like the Flying Broomstick and all the suggestions above, and ground mounts will just be ground mounts.
This does defeat the purpose of having mounts and bonus speed buffs that mounts give in other games, but seriously, it will be faster, safer and cheaper in the long run to just waypoint. Mounts can just have skills that speed buff you for those of you who are so concerned about speed buffs.

So you just want a way to circumnavigate the fact that you get into combat when attacked by a mob?
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
i don’t really want mounts to have an advantage, throw me of my mount if i get attacked for all i care.
i want it to add immersion, to have a way to travel trough the game in a slightly faster but non-game breaking way.
waypoints are immersion breaking things that ruins the RP part for plenty of ppl, why do you think there are so many ppl who play skyrim that never ever use quick travel?
not because of some challenge, it’s the immersion that’s ruined and they rather travel on a horse to get somewhere faster.
i’m not asking for a 150%+ speed mount, i am asking for a 30%+ mount that i can use in the open world part of the game.
i detest waypoints because they are both immersion breaking and cost coin to get somewhere, they are a way to go somewhere super fast not something to use as a primary way to travel.
Introduce flying mounts > Fly mount to unintended part of map > Get stuck and fall forever before death. Too much has to be revamped to allow for so much freedom of exploration, and also its completely unnecessary.
Mounts for collection are a good idea, mounts for speed buffs etc. aren’t and I’ll tell you why. Movement based skills become redundant, which means weapon skills become more or less useless and cripple players that invest in them. If you counteract this by limiting them to only PvE then you will feel the backlash from PvP’ers/WvW players like a slap across your face.
Not sure why people always push for mounts; its not like ANet has never thought about the idea, and obviously they came to the conclusion that it was not possible/needed/thematically correct for their game and I respect that.
Edit: If you use movement enhancing buffs/skills you can move pretty darn fast. The maps are perfectly sized to allow exploration on foot, whilst maintaining the threat from enemies because you can’t just fly/ride straight over/through them.

sorudo:
You are aware that WPs are actually in-lore, right? So they shouldn’t really break immersion at all.
Mounts on the other hand isn’t really used by most of the races, so that might very well be immersion-breaking.

uhmm, i really don’t care about the lore part, it’s still breaks immersion.
what’s more immersive:
- teleport everywhere in a magical way
- ride to your destination on a mount
ill go for the mount any day.

For something to break immersion it would have to not fit into the world. And thus would have to in some way or form, break lore. Which WPs don’t do.

anyone else hear the background to chocobo music while reading the OP?
i do agree with you on a mount tho… only because the game isnt the same as anet intended.
I do not think anet expected so many of the maps to not be visited after map complete.
I do not think anet assumed NO ONE would uncontent Waypoints making a good 75% of them unuseable.
I always ask my guildies, what is the point in all these waypoints that the game has if its ALWAYS contested.
This makes the waypoints as a money sink fail…. because they are unusable until someone is on the map unlocking them.
And when someone does, its only for a moment they stay open, before no one can defend the said waypoint and it locks up again.

So you are actually in favour of a gem store item that gives you a significant advantage over other players to complete content?
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
I’m not saying it should only be a gem store item. The only thing the gemstore can/should add is cosmetics. For anything. That’s my view anyway. So a nice looking mount, in this game, that does the same as regular mounts.
uhmm, i really don’t care about the lore part, it’s still breaks immersion.
what’s more immersive:
- teleport everywhere in a magical way
- ride to your destination on a mount
ill go for the mount any day.
For something to break immersion it would have to not fit into the world. And thus would have to in some way or form, break lore. Which WPs don’t do.
i play skyrim with the most lore breaking armors you can think of yet i don’t quick travel, it’s about immersing in the world and waypoints are the exact opposite.
