How to Dance, Volume 1
I don’t mind these dances because they’re the ones that were already in the Box o’ Fun. That said, some other cool dances would be nice, and I’d like it if ANet added a /stand emote that we get for free.
Shuffle > Gangnam Style any day, just saying. xD
Only thing that annoys me is that there has to be a book that wastes bag and bank space. They obviously did this to make our bags and bank more full so we have to buy more slots.
Could be a lot better done, instead of having to click the book and change all of your utilites, it could’ve just teached you new emotes to type in, like /dance1 /dance2 /dance 3 and such instead.

Yeah, its too bad that they’re in a book. I’d end up using them a lot more if it were as simple as typing variations of “/dance”. Since they’re in a book that you have to click, then choose the skill, and then unequip the book… I just won’t think to use them nearly as much.

I don’t think that’s obvious. They already have a framework for toys that change your skills, so the book is probably the easiest way to implement “teaching” dances to a character. Why would they write a completely new system when that effort could be directed toward other fun things?

I’m utterly shocked that they implemented it in such a way.
It was a guaranteed sale for me till I read this.

I’m debating on the book right now. I will probably buy it, but I think it would have been more convenient to implement it another way such as a ‘cosmetic utility skill’ or ‘/emote’.
Dance Book is awesome, thank you Anet:

I’m pretty sure the reason they did it was so that you could use it repeatedly as an item to temporarily “teach” other people the dances and let them dance along beside you. Otherwise, everyone who wanted to do group dances in synch with those who had the new ones would have to buy the dance skills.
People are way, way too paranoid about ArenaNet supposedly making goofy decisions to limit bag space. If they really wanted to do something like that, they wouldn’t limit the number of bag and bank slots you could buy, and they’d sell bigger bags through the gem store than are available in game.
It’s way too difficult to program a system where the item would be a consumable and would unlock emotes for your character through a simple / command.
It’s just an emote guys. Whether or not its a consumable or a clickable item that activates skills is really just nitpicking.

I’m quit dissapointed due it’s not learned. But it will waste 1 more slot of my bag :’(

They managed it in GW1, yes you didn’t have to click an item but you entered a promo code and it unlocked “/dancenew” across the applicable characters.
I suspect it’s not because of the emote but the fact that it replaces your utility skills with three different dances that can be changed on the go, and the ability to invite/follow others. There’s a little more tech involved. They also had this structure in place already for other items, so it would make sense for them to go with this.
Honestly, at first I also disliked that it takes up an inventory spot but I’m really loving it. It’s made synching dances so much easier and I love that people who don’t have the item can still do the dance this way. I’m willing to give up an inventory slot for that.

Just asking since i cant find out myself, what is the command to follow their dance steps once you have been invited? if i do /dance i just starts to dance my mad charr dance.

Buy an extra character slot and 1 invisible bag. Its worth it.
So wait, no one knows how to do the dancing animation without moving their lower body?!
Seems better that it is in an account bound book. That way you can move it between your characters if you want, right?
Ideally it would just teach all your characters on the account new emotes though.

Hey guys,
A bit of background on why a book and not just new slash commands.
Basically Eivene guessed most of it.
1) visual controls are just better than selling a bunch of slash commands with no tangible way to learn them and being limited by typing speed and accuracy.
2) We added the invite functionality.
3) It’s extendable … If it’s popular and we add more dances, more books don’t require a lot of command memorization.
Hopefully that clears some things up.

Just saying, it being an item that takes up space and I have to sort through my gear to find any time I want to use it, is the sole reason I decided against buying it.
I was about to when I still thought it was an item that was consumed to teach the slash commands.
Imagine if we had to haul around a bunch of items to wave, or do the regular dance or any of that.
It would be great if the [h]ero panel included a slot for stuff like this, e.g. a “manual of fun” slot to complement the “toy” slot already available.
I still think instead of selling new volumes you sell pages which fit inside the book so they take up one slot and have the new dances become “new skills” in the utility slots. So each line of utilities is a page and they are grayed out like unlearned skills that become unlocked with the purchase of said page.

May I suggest making the books “learnable” and having /dance change your bar to dance mode.
Then your dance bar would work by swapping in books like utility skills in 7-8-9 which would change your 1-5 to various dance moves, somewhat like Engineer kits work. Then put invite / group functionality on F1-F4, your standard racial dance on 10, and something fun like a randomized voice emote about dancing (with a cooldown so people don’t spam it) on 6.

Hey Janson!
Ty for your answer. First, Sry for my englih.
This is what I write not only for you but for the whole Anet team. (You = Anet)
Any chance to change your mind? Change the slash command “system”. I will try to tell you what the problem with this. I agree with all points, but there is another way.
Create a new emote panel. Like in other MMOs. Quick access for emote at chat, and detailed emote panel on hero panel.
Your points:
1. Visual controls better than bunch of slach commands. On emote panel u can do visuality, and never again slash command.
2. With emote panel u can do too. Activate Dance Volume 1 emote and u got a skill bar like now.
3. Command memorization, if would be emote panel no problem again.
And few more things.
I do not understand why Anet think that, this is the way more popular than the really account wide things. Not just this book, but costumes and etc too. Now you get an account bound item. I have 9 character, do not you think, I will buy all of the 9 characters. No way. If I buy only 1, every time I change character, I must put dance book to its inventory or the book is useless. If I forgot put back to bank the book, next time when I log in, I will forgot which character have the book. I do not want from this. Therefore, I do not buy this book, and the future following vol 2. … vol X. But if u sell emote pack to emote panel, I will buy all emote from volume 1 to volume 100. I do not want to miss either one.
It is not at all user-friendly solution now. Because of these I feel for you more important the one-character players (accounts). Do you know how good it feels to buy it once and for all existing and newly created characters will be able to use it? It was feeling amazingly good in GW1. I bought tons of costumes in GW1. But here in GW2, I almost no use of the Gem Store.
Please you think through it, yet it’s not too late. Sure this only a subjective opinion, you see the selling numbers. Please think about it what there would be if you would follow this way?
Ty for your time.

I’m the only one who regret farming gold to buy this?
I mean, I know what I was paying for but, I don’t know. I bought the tunneling thing and as I said to someone, it’s the more useless thing ever an yet, I love it but this, it just feel like a total waste.

Not buying it until it becomes more convenient to use (no waste of a item slot)

That’s actually a really good idea.
If it were made like this i’d have bought the item for sure. Maybe it’s still not too late to make the item better and more efficient.
This book is definitely not a waste of an item slot. Don’t regret buying it whatsoever.
WTB GW 1 Monk dance. I’ll pay real money for that.
My feedback:
I don’t like the dances very much. Furthermore, I am not willing to support the item-based idea. There are already too many things that rely on items sitting in my inventory for my taste. I am not going to start collecting emote-items and carry them around with me.
People using belittling wording like whining/qqing" are not taken seriously by me

I’d buy more volumes if they brought GW1 dances back. Item-based or not, I just want to dance like my old Ritualist and Necro.

We need to leverage this framework for musical instruments. At least enough instruments for a band’s worth of synced play.

I love this book, its a lot of fun. I wouldn’t mind getting more of these. I was expecting more /command options but this has been entertaining. Thanks for putting more dances for us to use and not something limited to party box. I am looking forward to have more emotes.
Book of Sitting maybe? We have all these chairs going unused.
Also PopeUrban suggestion of using it as a framework for musical instruments is fanastic idea.

I would like to know that as well.
As it stands right now, I am not really interested in that dancing book, but if it is possible to get such sweet bonus moves on my Charr, I would buy it immediatly.

Then just add an emote panel that is basically like an inventory panel with emotes filling ‘item’ slots. Double click an icon, emote starts.
1. An emote panel is visual, no need to remember commands. And you have them all in one place, you don’t have to remember which book had which emotes. And it’s compatible with slash commands, so you can have both.
2. With an emote panel you can add whatever you want. Not just “invite to dance” just about anything. Even commands that are not emotes like /FLG.
3. And it’s way more extendable as you are not limited to skill slots and people don’t have to store several books the more you add. You just add more icons to the grid.
Items take space, only one character can have them at the same time, and you don’t have an NPC to recreate paid items if lost, or collections with infinite slots like with upgrades in the PvP locker (put item once, take it unlimited times).
Do you expect people to get a book per character or to keep trading them between characters all the time, and to pay again if the item is lost for whatever reason?
Please stop with selling items ‘as is’ and go back to selling an unlock that gives access to the item like in GW1.
I would have bought all clothes if they were unlocks like in GW1.

I’m seriously shocked by the amount of people upset about 1 bag slot. I’m just happy it’s account bound.
Looking forward to more books. It’s a great idea and I’ve started my share of dance parties!
I’m seriously shocked by the amount of people upset about 1 bag slot. I’m just happy it’s account bound.
I’m not upset about 1 bag slot. I’m upset about trends.
1 slot becomes two, then 3, then every time you want to use the dances you have to juggle inventories for several minutes depending on how fast you load a map, and go back to banks, then go back to wherever you wanted to use the item, or be limited to use them with an item.
Unless you play with a single character, it can become a hassle. People should pay to have fun, not to suffer hassles.
Unlocks are simply better. Pay once, get it with any character, never lose it, no storage clutter, happy face.

It’s 1 slot….if you have a full set of 20 bags you have 160 item slots. You don’t have to juggle through your bags for minutes to find it, how is that even possible? Just open up your bag and it’s there(Unless you’ve made your bag the smallest size possible). And what’s this about map load? My backpack and everything else is fully loaded right after I enter a new zone. It only has a 1 sec delay when I login and I’m in Lions Arch.

Buy an extra character slot and 1 invisible bag. Its worth it.
Unfortunatly, I already got 8 character slot, full 8 bank slot, with all 12-15 slot bags :-/

But more items will be added in the future. As more are added, you have less and less space. If you discard an old costume, you can’t get it again, so you have to keep it.
And the more character you have, the harder it becomes remember who had which item as you simply can’t keep them in the bank, because the bank is better for stuff all your characters may need to use like materials with no collection slot, dungeon tokens and armors and upgrades you are saving for other characters.
And not every instantly loads any map. Many of my guildies take 1-2 minutes to load AL.
Multiply that by all the characters that may have the item, and there you have it. Ages to find it, as you can’t expect everyone to remember where did they left everything.
Even if they added a locker for town clothes and other gem store stuff, it’ll probably be like the special miniatures and PvP armor and weapons instead PvP upgrades as it should. So when you take an item from the locker, instead remaining the item there so you can take it with any character unlimited times so you don’t have to check all your characters to see who has the item.
So it’ll still be a hassle.
And I’m not taking that Rytlock miniaure outside its collection slot unless it remains there after taking it out like with PvP upgrades in the PvP locker. I deleted a miniature once in GW1 by accident, and I’m not taking any chances ever again. Either I can re-create the special item, or I’m not putting it in the inventory of any character.
It’s way, way simpler when it’s an unlock. Like talking to an NPC that gives the unlocked item, or use a panel that can generate any unlocked item, or a collection with the items that works like the upgrade slots in the PvP locker (take item, item remains).
You no longer need the item, you destroy it. You want it again, you get it again.
Unlocks are simply better. That’s just how it is.

Guys, ’’it’s just 1 inventory slot’’ is not really the problem here, but if they are going to add more bullkitten books, and more costumes, and more brooms, and more drills and yada yada, it will be really annoying if you want them.
Original Guild Wars had a Costume Maker, which stored your costumes, FOR FREE.
Original Guild Wars even had extra dances that you learned if you bought the Collectors Edition. THERE WERE NOTHING TAKING YOUR INVENTORY SLOT, IT WAS A /DANCE COMMAND YOU LEARNED.
ArenaNet is going back in so many ways, it’s sad. They are doing this becayse they want us to buy more bag and bank space.
And It’s really annoying.
I am sure if space starts becoming a problem they will find a solution to it. For now, I find this book fun and enjoyable to use. I am sure they just wanted to get something like this out there as soon as possible for people to enjoy since the dances were so much fun from the party box. Its the step in the right direction and applaud them for it.
We’ve actually talked about an emote panel a lot, however we don’t have one now ,or enough content to fill it yet, and so this is the best solution to start meeting the demand for more dances sooner rather than later (or maybe never).
Like we said in the beginning the strength of a micro-transaction model is it gives players the power to say what is worth their dollar. If it’s popular enough, we’ll continue to expand and improve the whole system.
Like we said in the beginning the strength of a micro-transaction model is it gives players the power to say what is worth their dollar. If it’s popular enough, we’ll continue to expand and improve the whole system.
Keep in mind that it might not be worth it to a lot of people in its current form and thus they won’t buy it, but with an emote panel or something like that, it could be worth it to a ton of players. Just because something isn’t selling doesn’t mean that a significantly improved something won’t do significantly better.
Yup. That’s another point towards unlocks vs just the item itself.
Even if it is a book instead a panel, if an NPC had it for you once purchased, or it appeared as an unlimited collection slot in the bank, or there was a panel to retrieve anything unlocked again, or some other way to get it again if lost, then there would be not as much of a problem even if it was an item in this particular case. You just go to the place where you can generate it, and get it again, regardless of your characters, and if you need space you can delete it right away, knowing you can get it back later. You don’t have to search for whoever has the item, you just go to the NPC with any character with which you want to use the item.
People would not just buy clothes and toys just because thats what fits a certain character at a certain moment, they would get them also to collect them, because one day they may want them and thy may not be avaliable them. As items that will be lost, you are limited by inventory space, and so people only get what they may want right away most of them time, and the more they get, the closer they get to the point when they won’t get anymore.
Unlocks can be even applied to things like the makeover kits.
For example, if every time you used a makeover kit things like a hair style for a particular race and gender, a tatto, a facial hair styles, or a hair color got unlocked,
people would get them to switch every now and then, knowing that they can go back for free in some “makeover NPC” that would let to change to previously unlocked features without a kit. Some would get them to switch every now and then, others just for the sake of collection.
As single one-time items, people just get what they like the most, and rarely ever change again unless new hairstyles are added, and that only if they like one of the new ones better than the one they had.
Based on the many other games I’ve seen and how people act in all of them, single items are a bad choice vs unlocks. Both for players and the business.
Like we said in the beginning the strength of a micro-transaction model is it gives players the power to say what is worth their dollar.
You could always just ASK your customers what is worth their dollar. How about adding some kind of feedback survey when you add new items the the store, so that people are able to tell you why they are not buying an item or what they do not like about it.
There have been multiple instances of me not buying a new item not because I thought it was too expensive, but because of different reasons (which I posted on the forums due to the lack of any decent feedback system in the game). Latest examples are this book which I did not buy because I hate the item-in-your-inventory based approach in addition to not being too pleased with the dances themselves, and the mining pick which was soulbound instead of accountbound.
