Definitely one of my biggest regrets, I didn’t get a chance to buy the watchwork pick earlier. After just 4333 harvests, it is even able to buy itself!

Will it ever go on sale again? Please?

It will probably show up again. It first appeared January 28th. The next time was June 28th. 5 months.

I am sure it will come back sooner or later, you know when they need a boost for the fiscal quarter or something. I personally will not buy the watchwork pick, nor any other item from the gemstore because of the watchwork pick since I feel that the pick is vertical progression/p2w.

You know, you undermine your legitimate concerns about convenience item vertical progression when you throw the laughably inaccurate “p2w” in there.

I swear, p2w is becoming the “Godwin’s Law” term for this forum…

I especially discount the posts where, after they use the term p2w, they then make the comment that ANet wont fix the perceived problem as it means more gem sales.

Agreed. As much as I have no issue with some restricted vertical progression being sold to maintain the game’s development, the idea it’s P2W is nonsense. If someone wants to P2W with the gemstore, they would have to be an idiot to do anything but exchange those gems for gold.

Oh well … someone’s got an axe to grind. At least Anet is predictable … a few posts won’t deter them from their approach to the game for now at least.

I wouldn’t call it p2w, no… But I would call it “pay for advantage”. With the amount of harvesting that I do, my first Watchwork Pick has already paid for itself. It’s just pure profit from now on.

Given everything that’s happened, I wouldn’t rule out more power creep for future gathering tools, even though I think that would be a mistake. It would create a community of the “haves” and “have-nots”, where a rich player who’s willing to pump extra money into his characters upon starting would have an undeniable advantage over a poor player starting from scratch. Is it “winning”? No, but does it create the perception of an unfair playing field? I’d say so.

tbh, I feel the gemstore tools need more of an advantage than just animation, and all tools should drop something extra.

Yeah, I know. But at least with the gem → gold conversion, the process is largely disguised, and was largely restricted to cosmetic skins. (Functionally, there’s little difference between a Legendary and an Exotic that’s many times cheaper.)

My concern is that if more power creep tools and “pay4advantage” items were released, you might end up in a situation where the wealthy player might start out with:

- 3 gathering tools, all giving additional materials above and beyond what the basic tools give
- Cheaper waypoints
- Self-repairing armor
- Instant bank/TP/Forge access from anywhere
- An innate account boost to gold/MF/karma
- etc. etc.

Individually, these benefits might be minor, but when taken together, it’s hard not to see the wealthy player as basically being in a different league. To be fair, the wealthy player IS paying for all of this, but is it worth developing the perception among gamers that GW2 is “a game for the rich”?

Perceptions are based on observations but people don’t always come to the correct conclusions. Being unfair implies someone didn’t get the opportunity to get the tool that someone else had. This is not the case … the tool was available to everyone and we even have two methods to get one!

If you didn’t have the gold, you could simply buy gems. If you couldn’t buy gems, hopefully you had the gold. If you had neither, that’s STILL not a fairness issue.

I’ll actually agree with you if ANet made one minor change; that the various tools become permanently available, at all times. So if you can’t get the tool now because you’re between paychecks or you’re just starting out and you don’t have the gold, that’s fine. You know that you can get the tool when your circumstances change.

But if the tool was only released as a limited time offer, then yes, I WOULD say it’s unfair. (ANet has brought the tools back, but you don’t know if they’ll continue to do so in the future.) It’d be no different to the people crying foul when the Lost Shores finale only happened once and if you missed it, tough luck.

Opportunity has to be available at all times for it to be fair.

Yes!! I bought the wwpick last time it was on sale and I LOVE it. Gathering is fun again, like it was before the unid dyes were removed from the drop table for plants. I have two other unlimited picks that are kind of pointless now though. The only reason I haven’t asked for a refund on the gems or to convert them into wwpicks is because I’m hoping they will be changed to drop something extra too at some point.

Instant TP/crafting/bank is possible
boosts to karma/mf is possible
Gems >>gold = "cheaper " wp’s, so thats no biggy.
self-repairing armour won’t happen as we have repair canisters. That’s your “instant repair”.

It’s ALL already there.

You’re just annoyed that people who actually spend money on the game should get something worthwhile.
the unlimited tools, are pretty worthless, it’s cheaper to buy a bag slot +bag and carry extra tools there. And that’s bad design in my eyes.
The tools are expensive, they should be worthwhile. And a small drop at something extra is an excellent way to do that.

It’s also a way to bring tp prices down, which I reckon is why anet HAVEN’T added extra drops.

sprockets are at 3silver atm, as oppose to 5/6silver.

This, is actually beneficial to that “poorer player.”

Opportunity has to be available at all times for it to be fair.

I will have to think on that but my initial feeling is that there is an element of timing involved with opportunity and yes, Anet is bringing these things back because they haven’t reached saturation in the market with the offerings. I don’t think we have any worry that we won’t ever see them again.

I don’t understand why Anet doesn’t simply make them available always (I’m not a marketing expert) but as long as everyone has access to purchase when the tools are made available, that’s a good balance between fairness and … whatever else Anet wants to happen by making them available for limited times.

If someone can’t purchase the gems needed to buy because they are between paycheques, they have bigger problems than missing out on an MMO.

Yes, I know that instant bank/TP items already exist, but you still need to use consumables to access them. (Instant MF items are exceedingly rare/expensive and not really available to the wider player base.) I’m talking more about being able to simply hit “O” and collect your purchases anywhere in the world, without even visiting a NPC or using an item. Stuff like that. Likewise, if you could pay money to get an innate 50% bonus to gold/karma/MF for your account, you really think most players would not see that as p2w?

As to the unlimited tools, “worth” is all in the user’s eyes. I find them extremely worth it, since it means never having to bother with replacing tools ever again, or swapping tools when I travel from one map to another. The time savings alone is MORE than worth the gems I paid for them. For another player, maybe the ability to spew lava when mining or summon a cutesie golem that harvests their crops is worth 1000 gems. I mean, we have players who happily drop 800 gems on finishers, or on minipets that don’t do anything but follow you around and look cute/amusing. I think THOSE purchases are worthless, but obviously other people think differently.

That’s the crux of my argument. Traditionally ANet’s gem store has only been about convenience and cosmetics. The Watchwork Pick is the first (and so far only) item that actually provided a tangible financial benefit beyond both. But if ANet embraces the concept when players don’t object to it, we could very well see gem store items one day that are leagues better than any standard gear. I don’t want to see GW2 turn into a game like that.

Also, the price of Sprockets never actually reached 5-6 silver, nor did they fall that much when the Watchwork Pick came back. They were selling for about 3.5 silver before, and they dropped to about 3 silver afterwards.

I don’t understand why Anet doesn’t simply make them available always (I’m not a marketing expert) but as long as everyone has access to purchase when the tools are made available, that’s a good balance between fairness and … whatever else Anet wants to happen by making them available for limited times.

Basically, it’s a marketing trick. People are more likely to buy when the item is labelled “limited time only”, even if the company fully intends on bringing the item back at some point in the future. I find it somewhat distasteful, as it preys on customers who either don’t realise the trick or who are more impulsive in nature.

It’s what I thought to but the reality is that it’s what people do and Anet is a business. It’s exactly the market they want to target “the average joe” and that’s how the average joe spends money; on impulse. I’m not so bothered by it because if they didn’t, they would have to raise prices.

I remember people complaining about the WW Pick when it first came out. They were annoyed by the fact that it had a chance to produce sprockets, which at the time were selling for 7-12 copper. The nerd rage was palpable!
