Improving The Black Lion Trading Chests
I really like these ideas! I would never buy keys myself because you’re right, the box contents are valuable. I just squirrel them away for when I get a key from my story quests to throw at them for the heck of it. I especially like the chance for a dynamic treasure hunt event.
I also really like where the OP is going with his comments because I opened a few chests in the beginning and stopped caring about them after a while. Nothing has been really useful to me, mostly poor items, uninteresting boosters and once a… new key xD
The recipes and unique weapons/armor is cool but I do not like the “unique” part. I would prefer if they are really hard to get in the game but the chance increase dramatically if you open a chest.
The whole treasure map thing could even be a collection of unique events or missions so that they do not get tiresome Some could have random rewards, other “named” tasks could have guaranteed rewards like find that place, do something and you will get X item. Getting there could be easy or hard, it is maybe one time only necessary to visit a antique shop and you have to climb a whole mountain the next time. Killa a boss at the end or solve some small in-game puzzle, be rewarded by opening a chest or interacting with a character and so on
NO!! If they added things like that, I would actually want to open the chests and would find it hard to resist purchasing the keys!
I also posted this over on the fan site I usually follow and there was also the suggestion made of making the chests a gold sink where instead of buying a key with gems an NPC lock smith could open the things for you at a price.
One of the other things you find in those chests which I find almost useless at this point is the tonics. They take up way too much room, are account bound so I can’t even save em up and give em to friends for an in-game party or anything so those things take up some unwanted space as well. I do like the detail and some of the forms we can morph into but being account bound kind of dumbs down the whole idea of the tonics.
So……….
The tonics need a title perhaps that folks can unlock or I was thinking what about if you manage to drink enough of the said beasties ( making the chests also worth more ) that due to toxic effects from drinking " X " amount of the same tonics you get yourself the ability to have an ever lasting tonic after so many are drank. Say tonic whatever # becomes you’re ever lasting tonic. Those things were tradable, very popular and a hit in GW 1. The problem with the idea though is these are currently account bond and that would need to change as well. Bet you see these helping increase the trading post activity as well if they were more usable as well. Again it adds value to things we know are already in these chests.
I can come up with a ton of ideas about these chests but as they stand now they really do need some re-work when things settle down for the design and dev guys.
these indeed don’t break the economy, except maby the rare craft materials… but if the "Binford 3000 Grawl Whacker " would be a skin item (just like heritage gear) i really love the idea

Never drink with the apothecary, you can’t know what she puts on your drink…
I like the idea of some better items rather than just getting spammed with “tonics of transform into a worthless creature that nobody cares about”.
As it is I’ll never buy a key because they aren’t worth it. I’ll just use the keys from 100% areas. If they ever remove that then I’ll just delete all the chests because they aren’t worth it seriously.
