Infinite Use Transmutation Charge
I totally would buy this. My 20 characters want this and hairstyle contract more than anything else in game.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
It’s not what we want. It’s weather Anet will make more money from it.
Anet might make more money from selling 1 time transmuation charge or 1 time hair contract than give us permanent ones for 2000 gems.
They already have a Permanent Hair Style Contract in the game, it’s just very rare and cost as much as a legendary to buy from the TP if some does happen to put one up. Maybe they could put a Permanent Charge thing in the BL chests then like the Perm Contracts? They would game money off of that and no skin off their back if someone does happen to get it. I wouldn’t like it personally just because I would never get it…but hey, it’s a step forward.
The permanent hair contract only dropped during winter’s day 2 years ago. They removed it, so they probably think it’s a terrible idea.
the only way for permanent Transmutation charge will exist is IF it is hidden behind an RNG wall, so expensive and so low that less than a few thousand players can ever get it. Similar to Chaos of lyssa.

I don’t understand why people keep suggestings ways in which Arenanet, a for profit company, should make less money. It is like they never ever think through it. It is like Arenanet exist to self their needs and NOT make money.

I’d buy it, but 2000 gems is awfully cheap for something that could see tremendous amounts of use. If one were to go on sale (BIG “if”…), I expect the price would be even higher. Like 5000 gems or so.
Transmutation charges are currently 24-30 gems a piece. You need 6 to do a full set of armor. What you are suggesting at 2000 gems that most players would only ever buy 66-83 charges in their lifetime in the game or 11 to 12 full armor remaps or roughly two per original costume slot.
But the Gem Shop’s clientele for charges are those who love skinning. To me this means 2000 gems is too low and in the long run ANet would lose money offering such an item.

1,000 gems is the price for an unlimited gathering tool; it replaces consumable multi-use items that might need to be repurchased for a few silver perhaps 3x/day (representing mining 100 nodes every day), i.e. 1000 gems to replace something that is worth 15s/day (I ignore the convenience aspects). That’s less than 2 gems per day.
Suppose after the novelty wears off, that people reskin on average once per day. That represents at least 150 gems per day (just for 6 pieces of armor). Increasing the costs linearly, I would expect an infinite reskin tool to be valued at no less than 75,000 gems.
Admittedly, I’ve drastically oversimplified the calculus involved in pricing such an item, but I think it’s a reasonable ballpark figure of what we might expect. I doubt if many would be willing to pay even half that much.

Yes the purpose of the Gem store is to make money, but I think it would be silly for Anet to write off any suggested item that might seem to reduce profit. They have to strike a balance between keeping the core players happy, (and playing the game) and encouraging players to part with gold/gems. There is a reason most businesses have some sort of rewards system or discounts for loyal customers – these are the customers they make the most money from.
The people likely to buy an everlasting transmutation charge are exactly the sort of people who will regularly buy outfits/armor/skins in the gem store, so i think it would pay to keep them happy.

But that replaces an item that cost coin, not gems. The suggestion was to make an unlimited item that cost gems that replaces a consumable item that cost gems.
Don’t try to equate cost of unlimited gathering tool in gold that it would cost to convert to gems. ANet doesn’t price items in relation to the exchange, only cash value.

I’d honestly pay 10$ a month for an unlimited transmutation charge. If they basically said, here’s this unlimited charge, it lasts 2 weeks or 4 or whatever (ssimilar to the banker golem) I would do it in a heartbeat.

A set price for an unlimited use item that last a certain period of time sounds interesting. I might consider that if it was offered. It would help the people with multiple alts if it was on the wardrobe UI and not an item sitting in the bank

Yeah I could see it as an infinity symbol on the UI + x number that you already have and a timer. When the timer ran out, would buy a new one.
I think this is something they might consider since the people who would buy this would probably do so every 2 weeks or however long it lasted so they’d still make the $$$

That is where are you wrong. If you have been following f2p like games for a while you will realize this one truth, they companies don’t need everybody to spend the money, they only need a very few to spend to make a profit. Less than 15% or .15%. Not sure yet. I dont have access to the data now.
So no, they don’t have to make a balance or attempt to make players happy. the truth is some players will never be happy and there is no reason to attempt to make them happy.
What you are suggesting only brings short term profit gain but overrall will cost them more in the long run.

^This.
With a microtransaction model, you’ve got three main types of players:
1. Those who frequently buy things.
2. Those who buy things from specials.
3. Those who never/rarely buy things.
You need to keep only group 1 happy in order to be profitable. Group 2 will buy whenever you have a special, so you don’t need to keep them happy, just keep specials rolling out. Group 3 is interested in playing for free (due to budget or philosophical reasons) and thus only need to be kept “not so unhappy that they won’t log in”. Groups 2 and 3 make up the VAST majority of the entire playerbase.
NCSoft will release gem store content that appeals to group 1 and occasionally group 2. They will not release things that make group 3 happy if those things will in any way reduce the number of transactions made by group 1 & 2 unless group 3 has just about reached the “unhappy enough to quit logging in” stage.
Full Disclosure: I’m typically group 3. I enjoy playing this game for no extra money and thank groups 1 & 2 for supporting the servers I play on for free.
Nexon, which is entirely F2P/Cash Shop based, makes it’s billion and a half dollars off of 10% of the active players. 11% last quarter with an average of $35-36 spent that quarter.
Not that much different from the amount spent on a year long subscription plan, averaged for a quarter.

….. The ‘free’ 70 or so Transmutation Charges I got when the wardrobe came out went with in a few days. I am always sitting at 0-2 Transmutation Charges at a time because I have 10 characters and always change the appearance of all of them. ……
I’d say you are exactly the demographic they geared the Wardrobe System for…..exactly why would the do this and halt a new revenue stream?
On the other hand, I think characterizing Anet as NEVER trying to make their players happy is a HUGE exaggeration and would actually tend to prove it is NOT the typical F2P/Cash shop model. The Wardrobe change makes LOTS of players happy….just some of us can resist the urge to change our armor everyday on 10 characters…..
