Title = The Question,

I know it’s a bit of a stupid question, because 90+% of MMO’s allow players to do it, and there seems to be nothing hugely unethical about it.

I just wanted to make sure I won;t get banned for making a ton of cash on TP.

Also, would have just read ToS, but I was having a hard time finding them.

Thanks

No it’s not against the ToS. You can try to manipulate the market to your heart’s content, but be aware that the market is global (unified across all the servers) so the volumes are HUGE. In very rare cases you are able to empty the market of a wanted commodity.

Well, I’ve been banned from selling on the TP or sending ingame mail it seems since saturday.

My crime? Buying and selling on the TP. Not even for a huge profit (5s on this, 15s on that) but I did a lot of trading on saturday, making about 12-ish gold.

I know this has also happened to a few other players, I’ve got a ticket in since sunday and have stopped lvling my characters as what am I meant to do with my loot now? Vendor it all?

I’m pretty annoyed about this, its ridiculous. I assume its to do with some over-sensitive anti-botting measure but what the hell, I’m a real person doing everything manually which was very time consuming.

Well, in mine opinion it should be, if you are substantially changing the market price and hindering the other player experience by doing so: You deserve to be banned for at least 15 day. Also the profit you have been made should be stripped out your account.
I’m not saying that you can’t buy low volume of goods and reselling these in later shortage day’s for profit, i’m saying that if you buy good and increase it’s price by 800% you are a little kitten and messing the market for us all.
So, yea exploiting the market should be a bannable offense.
Item you have bought from TP should be bound to the price you have paid off and shall have a soft cap of % ( like 30% ) which u can made by reselling it again using the TP.

If you are talking about me in particular I was buying items for examping for say 15s, and selling them for 20-30s etc.

I was trading on the trading post.

Are you sure that trading was reason for ban? I made much more than that by trading, so there must be another reason.

Laughable.

Sure, no issue. Because this is a single player game, and virtually no one can do that too..
I’m not talking about you, i would just like to point out that there’s more then 2 million ppl which can do what you are already doing.

I personally feel that the Trading Post , being part of a role-playing MMO, should emulate or play the role of a real world commodities exchange. I think some true perspective need to come into play sooner than later. If it can happen in the real world it should be ok here. Buy low sell high is standard business in markets. Flipping should be allowed. I would like to see a finalization on the Trading Post setup in order to keep from watering down aspects of this game to the point of being mundane. Frankly the OP wants to play this game his way and I have no objection to it.

Crafting exists so players can craft gear and farm mats if they dont want to pay the TP price. If enough people do this instead of buying from the TP, the basic law of supply and demand takes over. The seller sees no demand for his supply at his asking price and must re-evaluate his pricing. There is too much adjusting going on this early. Everyone needs to just let the economy settle before all the knee-jerk adjusting. As it stands right now, I certainly wont sell and I have only bought 2 times, because of all the fiddling and adjusting. Let it run and let the players shape the economy for a while before any more tinkering occurs.

I’m absolutely positive that’s the only reason it could be but I can understand the scepticism.

I put alot of orders in for the stuff I was buying on saturday and there was a fairly quick turnaround then boom it hit 10pm GMT and that was it, I couldn’t list anything and “Error attempting to sell” is all I get now (and yes I’ve relogged).

Sometimes happens for me too, but few minutes and it’s normal again. Also, TP sometimes(rarely) completely freezes on search.
TP is unstable, and even not working at all, for some people. It’s technical issue.

There is no difference between using time to collect materials, or using time to get gold other way and buy from TP. Actually, finding a good way to get money could be much better(in context of lost time) than grinding for materials. Unless you like grinding, of course.

Yes, before it would come up “Error attempting to sell” after I listed say, 10 items and I would have to wait 5-10 minutes-ish before the system would let you list anymore. I assume again, thats an anti-botting measure. This is what it does for everyone.

I get this message all the time now, and also cannot send mail. I assume the system thinks I’m a bot or why would it ban the mail as well? Because it would want me to stop sending my gold anywhere else.

Actually i think not. At least for me, it just occures rarely. Very rarely.
That’s technical problem, i’m sure.

Ok, so… It doesn’t look like I’ve been banned or anything, which is good, because I love GW2. But anywho…

WOW this thread exploded. So in response to people with “Error attempting to sell”. The message goes away. Just stop posting for a min and slow down. Pretty sure it’s an anti-botting measure of some kind.

Also, I mainly play the market when my friends are offline, and I want to make money while doing HW, or doing something else. I have made a substantial profit from simply flipping large quantities of items at a very small profit margin (I only make like 2s) per stack. I don’t see how this is wrong, but I’ve seen people complaining on the forums, so I just wanted to make sure I was in the clear to play my way.

Note: Flipping Increases the base cost of an item slightly, but I don’t see how it in any way affects SMART buyers.

Anyone who wants to buy mats for crafting for a low price, can watch the market and figure out the lowest possible buy price (I mean hell, how do you think we manage to make a profit with a 15% tax?)

^This guy. I like player run economies. The game already has enough safeguards in (gold sinks, sell tax, et al.) to curb inflation. I really love actually playing GW2. But I like buying and the selling (before I go offline) so that when I come back I have a cozy profit with which to go play WvW (which is REALLY expensive for a lower level player)
or buy stuff/pay repair bills.

I doubt they’re going to ever do anything to discourage TP trading excluding anything that looks like it’s being done by a bot.

Why? The 15% total trading post tax is the most effective gold sink in the entire game. WvW is the second most effective. Between those two they’ll be able to prevent inflation and the more selling that goes on, the more gold that disappears.

Preventing inflation is pretty important in this game considering their only future revenue is from gems and the benefits of the gem trading system offers to both paying and non-paying players.

I’m sure its neither encourages or discouraged. People do it all the time in the NYSE. Economy 101 is economy regardless of the commodity or goods. The only difference is the variance in value in the currency. Just as it costs someone to make a trade on the market, Anet is charging their fees as well.

What are you talking about? Something on the TP is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

If someone is willing to pay a high price so be it. You don’t like how expensive something is then go farm it yourself.
