Is getting 8000 gems for 100 usd a good deal?
Well, it’s currently the rough equivalent of 285 gold. In this game you need gold to make gold off the TP, so if I were a beginner with no gold I would consider it worthwhile to buy maybe 3200 gems with real money and exchange it for gold (around 40 dollars worth). After that I would get to working the TP.
Otherwise, if you have a job that pays above minimum wage that you don’t hate, you’d do fine to just buy the gems…although forget a legendary weapon unless you forge it yourself. It would cost you roughly 1,100 dollars.

Why not buy $20 worth of Gems five times? Nets you the same amount.

If you exchange larger amounts, you get a marginally better exchange rate at times.

Not when buying gems.
I’m talking about exchanging. Not buying.
But you responded to someone talking about buying, not exchanging.
I was just adding on. I’m sorry if my response appeared to be a criticism.
80 Gems for $1 is the standard rate. There are no discounts for bulk purchases.
RIP City of Heroes
I would like a discount for lager purchases. Would add some incentive to spend the extra money. I suppose its worked this way so you can’t kitten the system for a bit more gold.
In War Thunder, Warframe and Planetside 2 I regularly buy the more expensive packs because they have discounts. In guildwars 2 I buy what I need, with a little spending money left over.
Huh, apparently G_imp is a kitten word.

I think you meant “gyp” which means to cheat or defaud. The word you used means “maim, injure, or to place at a disadvantage”. Also, the word you used has a newer slang meaning that is the reason it is censored on the forums.
Gyp is a slur against a particular type of people. (Gypsies) – The more you know *
and refuses to spare the life in return for the surrender at discretion (unconditional surrender)
of a vanquished opponent.

Isn’t that kind of like saying “Scot” is a slur against people from Scotland?
To not derail the thread I will PM you some more info since you are curious

No because Scot doesn’t have a disparaging meaning where gyp means cheated or swindled. You don’t hear “I’ve was scot” or “He scoted me”. What would that even mean? You were forced to listen to bagpipe music, eat haggis, wear a kilt and/or dye all your body hair ginger?
There is a similar case where the name of one religion is used to refer to the bargaining prowess of it’s followers but can also imply being cheated. We don’t use that word in polite conversation either.

I’d consider it from another angle— how much enjoyment will 8000 gems/300g net you in comparison to your other leisure expenses?
If it’s greater than, then why not? If it isn’t, then you’d best reconsider.

gyp (v.)
“to cheat, swindle,” 1889, American English, probably derived from the colloquial shortening of Gypsy (cf. gip). Related: Gypped. As a noun, “fraudulent action, a cheat,” by 1914.
Huh. Never knew.
8000 gems for 100usd isn’t a good deal at all as most of things you’ll able to buy in gems store are consumables (shame on 1 use armors skins for 800 gems each…) and useless WatchHowImSoCute things (I consider only expensions as mandatory, maybe boosters for some players).
You have better to just take what you need.
