Yes, someone did the calculations I believe. And it is a waste of money.

The dust is the killer. The mat prices are favorable for some of the conversions, but with current dust prices you lose like 1g per conversion, it is pretty bad.

I wrote a script that takes the current prices, using the gw2spidy api, does the calculations:

Promoting 250 Mithril Ore into some Orichalcum Ore
Cost of promotion: 20606 Number of promoted items to be generated for promotion
to be worth it: 60.42815249266862

This is the result as of now. Not taking the philosopher’s stones, which require skill point, into account.

Typically you get about 15-25 T6 ore per promotion, so it is definitely not worth it to promote T5 ore to T6 at this moment. It has not been worth it to promote T5 to T6 ore, for a long while already.

One of the things that I don’t like about this game is that there are lots of little traps like these, that casual players are not aware of. I used to be new to the game, did the promotion and lost gold as a result until I started calculating.

Folks that don’t do their research will tend to do things that cost them in ways they aren’t aware of. I think the folks that just accept what other folks tell them is the “best” thing to do get burned a bunch too. I’ve seen a number of TP related blog posts that look like bare faced pump and dump schemes to me.

The possibility exists that promoting crafting materials could be profitable, so I don’t really see this as a trap. Is salvaging a rare for the ectos now that the price of them has plunged a trap? It used to be profitable. If you want to be certain what you’re doing makes economic sense, you have to do the math (or convince some kind soul to do the math for you)

I don’t mind it as much now that I am more aware of how things are done in this game. I “pity the fools” (sounding like Mr T) that throw items into the mystic forge without proper calculations, like I did.

Not every recipe provided by the mystic forge is a blessing and most sites like gw2spidy only display crafting data.

Big Hint for those of you who are thinking of creating a gw2 utility website: MYSTIC FORGE recipe calculations so people can tell if they are worth it or not.

And I believe this is why it’s in the game. The more interconnected the different materials are, the more the economists have safeguarded against one material being the runaway most expensive and leaving others behind. This conversion ensures that the value of orichalcum ore can’t outpace the value of mithril ore by too much.

But at this moment in the economy, as you and others have stated, it’s not a useful formula.

Yes, someone did the calculations I believe. And it is a waste of money.

What ANET needs to do is just get rid of all these other gold/skill sinks and just worry about removing supply from the game so that it balances out.

What do they need to do? They need to make it so that people can just throw in a set number of items from tiers 1-5 and the item is promoted to the next tier. Does this mean that we will probably see orichalcum ore tank, in the short-run yes, but it will pick back up after the initial shock and keep in mind that even though orichalcum ore is going to go down the price of ores tier 1-5 are going to go up. This will actually help the economy and game as a whole. ANET wants people in all different zones whether it’s zone 1-10 or 70-80 and this would help achieve this.

I know people are probably thinking that if Tier 6 mat’s drop because people are now off-loading a lot of tier 5 materials that crafted items are going to drop they are correct. Then again, the best items in the game aren’t all craftable, just the backpiece. This would also make some of the extreme crafting requirements for these materials actually logical. Maybe have

The biggest problem with this games economy is the excess supply and until ANET takes a serious look at limiting the supply of materials we’re going to see it sluggish.

Well, thing is the mystic forge is random, you might get lucky. I wouldn’t waste it on the T6 mats. I’ve gone down that road last week for each T6 material to see what I would get out of it, was totally not worth it, and I was kitten afterwards.

But if we’re talking about things like combining exotic weapons, that’s a different story. I consider that gambling. I do it every now and then when my gold supply gets up (maybe 30 – 50g). So I’ll grab some of the cheapest exo’s in the TP (~2g 60s?).. which I’m probably getting burned, I should look into making my own. And throw 4 into the mystic forge.

It is gambling. You might get lucky like I did the first time 2 1/2 months ago and get a dusk. Then you might get lucky again a week ago and make another dusk.. (hiya 550g.)
