Is the economy to far gone
The economy is fine. What you need to do is look at how you play, and what you want to achieve. So if your goal is to be able to buy stuff, you need Gold. Then you have to make the choice to do activities that generate Gold. Run Fractals or Dungeons, kill World Bosses for high end loot, World Completion, WvW, etc.

I started playing at release with friends who no longer play I stopped for about 8 months and am really just playing catch up. But i have done world completion and I wvw, world bosses only happen at reset on my server and I have never gotten anything great from them. On the other hand I could make tons selling my mats I already have but with ascended armor on the way I’m holding off. And I play just fine I do what i feel like and is fun the game should not be about money.
Are people still producing, exchanging, and consuming goods?
Yes? Then the economy is still fine.
Is your poverty somehow preventing upward mobility?
No? Economy is perfectly fine.
There are ways to make in-game currency. Players who play 10 hours a day make 10x as much money as players who play 1 hour a day.
If they increase rewards so that the 1h/d player makes as much as the 10h/d player, then the 10h/d player will make 10x as much as he used to, and will still make 10x as much as the 1h/d player.
If you have the time, you can choose to spend it doing things that make money – learn to play the TP, run dungeons, join the champ trains, whatever. If you don’t have the time, you can buy gems to make money. If you choose not to do either one, then you will not have as much money as those who do these things.
The economy is run by the players, and the players decide what the prices will be, not Anet. Some players will always seek to make as much money as possible, there is nothing Anet can do about this. You choose to participate in the game or do your own thing and set your own goals.
… I stopped for about 8 months…
So what do you expect to happen? You happened to miss some opportunities to make a lot of money. So you will naturally be far behind someone who played every day for the last 8 months.
I didn’t expect anything. I already said I know it will take time. It was a question that some answered but most seem to have not read the post in the first place and the economy effecting how you play is not how I play. This was more about costs of using and gearing more than 1 character and what anyone thought about the economy.
I don’t get the problem … you already told us you aren’t driven to do anything but what you want to do and have fun doing it. The economy shouldn’t concern if that’s the case.

best way to make money is to come up with a way to auto buy items on the BLT.
