Legendary is a luxury item?
If they change all ascended to have switchable stats, which they may at some point, then having legendary for that reason won’t be a consideration.

If people had wings they wouldn’t need airplanes.
Legendary is a luxury item.
If you craft your own ascended weapon they’ll cost around ~40g (check gw2spidy).
This means 20 ascended weapon ball parks around 800g, which is less than half of what it costs to make a legendary.
If your argument is regarding utility, you are better off making multiple ascended items.
^ You forgot the importance of bank, bag space, and convenient. Not to mention Anet never promised ascended to be the last tier. Only promise is legendary will be the last tier.
I think my argument isn’t about weather legendary is a luxury item. My argument is if it cost so much for utility. You might as well get a legendary.
In fact I’m not really arguing. I’m just having a dilemma weather to pursue legendary or not. Which is driving me crazy… I think there’s more to consider like vision crystal or the price tag of future legendary armor, weather there will be new stats added, Anet future plain of making more stats useful etc.

I’d not get a Legendary if it wasn’t for the looks. Ascended isn’t anywhere near the price-range a Legendary is, where-as it offers plenty:
Stats:
Chances you’ll eventually (through balancing, changes etc) use every single stat-combination on a certain weapon possible is very low, some weapons are just more designed towards a certain goal than another. I personally find the stat-swapping slightly overrated aswell since I often find myself desire a different sigil when I desire different stats.
Convenience:
Bank-space doesn’t quite make up for the ~2000g difference either. Somewhere on the forums there’s some calculations, but I doubt 20 bankslots vs 1 bankslot would cost more than ~15g.
Last-tier:
This is a decent reason to get a Legendary for any other reason than their looks/brag-rights. How-ever by the time they do introduce a new tier (if they will ofcourse) Ascended will most likely be a lot easier to obtain and the new tier will be similar to what Ascended is right now price-wise rather than a Legendary, otherwise you’ll slowly build up a wall new players can’t get over, which can demotivate them. You will how-ever have the new tier straight away which is a sweet luxery.

^ ok thanks for the advice. I think I’ll just save my money for legendary armor. Maybe legendary armor will only cost 2000 gold which is the price tag of a few ascended armor sets.
Concerning Legendary Weapons, the utility of swapping your stats is not so great, if you want to do it on a daily basis, for example you prefer a different build for pve and wvw because most of the time, different builds use different sigils. That would mean you have to apply a new sigil every time you swap between those builds.
If you only use 1 build permanently and are afraid that your ascended weapon will be useless because Anet nerfs it at some point, a legendary might come in handy.

No one ever said that new tiers in future will be > Ascended.
No one said otherwise either.
White > Blue > Green > Yellow > Orange > Pink > Purple
Go play with the color spectrum and guess yourself

…there will be an ultraviolet and infrared rarity?

Legendary is a luxury, but not a prestige item as it can be directly bought from tp with real money in a minute.
With the addition of account bound status, swappable sigils, on the fly swappable traits, and the already added swappable stats, they are moving farther and father away from being “luxury”. All of those on top of being permanent top tier add to the utility of the items. Distinction via utility is not a quality of “luxury” imo.

Sigils on legendaries are swappable now?

You know people keep thowing this phrase around without fully understanding how expensive buying a legendary with real $ is, let alone the # of people who are willing to do so.

I dont.

Yeah so I once calculated how much I would need to buy in order to buy the minstrel because I just don’t have the time to map complete and farm gold anymore and it was close to 800$. Now even for me, a dedicated gem buyer, this is an immense amount of money for a single weapon… and though I likely spend that amount every couple months it’s still not enough gain for so much money.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.

There’s a chance I might be mistaken, but I thought they said something about that during one of the last twitch rdy up episodes.

We have cars even though we can walk.
We’d still use airplanes, lets be honest.

I dont.
I got Dusk as a random drop last year, and sold it. Those glowy swirly swords are just annoying, and haven’t impressed me since I saw the first one about a month after the game was released.
That’s actually why I didn’t join the Legendary acquisition group. Most of the Legendaries are just too over-the-top for my tastes. I like my weapons to be visually impressive, but not so flashy so that it basically IS the most stand-out thing about my character. I want it to complement my appearance, not BE my appearance.
The only Legendaries I actually find appealing are Kudzu, the Flameseeker Prophecies and Kraitkin, but unfortunately they don’t suit the aesthetics of my characters who could use them.
Legendary is a luxury item.
