Each race seems to have an evil racial enemy… I think it would be awesome if we could join them. So if you play Sylvari, you might opt to join the Nightmare… if you play human you could join the bandits, Norn -> Sons of Svanir, etc…

This would allow for world PvP, it would also put human players on both sides of dynamic events, i.e. if you are Inquest you could lead an inquest invasion against some Asuran outpost, which would turn into a Dynamic Event for both you and them…

A personal story would have to be made for each but considering how well the evil factions are fleshed out there is certainly enough available lore to do it.

Anyway I think this would be extremely cool for an expansion or something… One of the concerns I have about expansions is what will be done with the personal story… if there’s a new world boss it’s going to render alot of the dialog about Zhaitan obsolete, however this idea and the personal stories for the evil side could all still revolve around Zhaitan… What do you think?

So basically you’re asking for faction vs faction, which is basically world vs world vs world minus one vs world… Yo dawg…

Kind of – I’m asking for the opportunity to play as an evil character, because right now everyone plays a good character no matter what race/profession they roll. It would add alot more dynamics to PvP also that WvW doesn’t encompass. And also I love WvW, more of it would be cool instead of having it be separated from the rest of the gameworld. There could still be PvE servers where players can’t attack eachother but maybe can still conduct PvE dynamic events against eachother.
I don’t know all the details, that’s for them to decide, I just think joining the evil side would be awesome.

Still don’t see how thats different from world vs world, evil vs good, fissure vs millers vs dzago, the only difference is you’ll get a lot more hate mail from people on your server, oh and I doubt anet want to create double the cities and stories just to copy paste the world vs world pvp into pve aswell.

Since the world is getting invaded in WvW, and the evil factions exist on our worlds, why shouldnt they fight for their world as well?

This was suggested in GW¹ too and if I remember correctly, it was explained that the game is about the heroes – you and me. It is about a story of the world, being part of it. So it doesn’t make sense to be being able to join an “enemy” or be one.

They created the PvP maps for that – the Mists if you want a lore side to it.

Also, your suggestion will make GW2 tip more towards a sandboxMMOG That’s a feature you only see in sbMMOGs.

As a PvPer, this sounds great to me… but for those not interested in PvP, this would be a pretty invasive change. Even if direct player combat could be toggled off, they’d still have to deal with the DE changes, which would ultimately be a form of PvP.

So… this would require its own server type, and massive changes to the personal story line, so I don’t see it happening… ever. :-/

IMO the easiest option for WPVP would be to let guilds declare war on one-another; this would require the consent of both guilds, so it wouldn’t be pushed on anyone who doesn’t want it.

I think issue is that some people are assuming that these factions are evil by there nature, and not exactly true. Especially the inquest, who are a GREAT example! while you continually conflict with them they are pretty much an accepted facet of asura race, the council even accepts some of there practices because while it may not always condone the methods, they cant deny the results.

The nightmare court and the bandit and the sons are far harder to justify and at the end of the day you are more or less asking for open world pvp which i just dont think this game would cater to very well. Not with its present design, and would require an almost entire overhaul of the dynamic events system. Then you run into the whole we have more players then you, lawl roll over your event groups, and not sure would be a good system.

I like that pvp is excluded to a separate world, that have to que into.

Our main target is the dragons; not each other. PvP is already available to everyone in sPvP and WvW. Be happy with that.
This was one of the main selling points for myself when I decided to get this game. No spoilers running around ruining my experience in the game.
I am most likely never to even play PvP.
I have no desire to be bothered with having to look out for my back.
This game is my way of relaxing and escaping RL.
A majority of those playing are doing so due to this very fact.
Anet will not loss most of it players just to satisfy this request, which as I stated at the beginning of this reply was already addressed by Anet a long time ago.

I can forsee 0 events in the Cursed Shore being completed a day with this change.

Not only is this a bad idea for other players, but a bad idea for you, do you know how stupid a character would have to be to be part of the nightmare court?
You could be fooled into thinking a Charr is a Sylvari and an ally as long as they put a leaf on their head and said: “I’m considering joining the Nightmare court!”

This is a funny post. It’s just an idea, whether you think it’s a good one or not is your opinion, but saying stuff like I should leave the game, and that you somehow know that only a strict minority of players would like this idea is funny. I’m happy that you finally found a game that you enjoy, but that doesn’t mean it’s gonna remain static forever – updates will come, changes to the gameworld will happen. I certainly wouldn’t want to be Anet when they make a change you disagree with.

It fits my character’s personality better to join the Ascalonian rebels. Unfortunately hero is the only way to go.

I’m not sure what your “research” consists of exactly. If Anet hasn’t surveyed every player and asked them whether or not they like this idea, it seems funny you state with such certainty that nobody would, and you also state Anet will never do this. Are you in charge of them or something? Do you call all the shots? Just because they didn’t do it for the original game doesn’t mean they would never consider doing it for a future expansion.

And if this idea came up previously, obviously other people have thought it before, which doesn’t make it seem so minor as you seem to want to believe…

Speculation aside (because that’s all your ‘certainties’ really are, unless you are in charge of Anet but somehow I don’t think you are), what exactly do you have against it? The potential for griefing that you bring up in your first post is obviated by having PvP and PvE servers, all you’d get would be an increase in PvE dynamic events, which you seem to enjoy anyway…

I’ll be honest, my impression of the nightmare court is they are idiots with horrendously weak minds and will.

I’ve had the same thought. This would be great. People have feigned Court alliances for the sake of RP, but being able to actually do it would be great.

ANet does not want world PvP in the game. The game was DESIGNED around the fact that there is not and never will be world PvP in the game.

They do not want world PvP. World PvP will never happen.

I loved playing as one of Kralkatorrik’s minions in the Beta Weekend Experience 2 end event. I’d love to see more stuff like that.

A lot of the boredom with events could be alleviated if player monsters were pushing back during them, causing some of the events that never fail, to… fail.

They did say that they were looking into adding more events like that where you’re turned into an enemy temporarily(The extent of the event).

I’d have to go dig up the quote though.

But why not? How can you put such an amazing world PvP system into the game yet keep it totally sequestered? That’s something I didn’t understand, the game seems to be very PvP oriented, and the PvP obviously has alot of thought behind it, so to say that there will never be world PvP doesn’t seem in-line with their philosophy of making great PvP…

Plus didn’t they say that guilds declaring war on eachother will be in someday? Doesn’t that imply world PvP (atleast guild PvP)? Not sure how else they could have us go to war…

Because the questing experience out in the world is supposed to be entirely cooperation-based. If you had people running up and ganking you in the middle of a Dynamic Event, it would completely ruin the purpose of having Dynamic Events in the first place- which is to get everyone to work together.

World PvP goes completely against the design direction that they want for the game. They want people to work together, to work as a team, and help each other out. Not gank like crazy in the middle of a Dynamic Event.

Tbh, though, you can go to WvW and play the game normally. There’s gathering nodes, there’s PvE events(I saw a few while I was there), and there’s PvP -everywhere-. It’s like playing in a PvP-enabled server. Except everyone that’s there wants to be doing PvP all the time.

I’m not sure if they said GvG was going to be in, but if it was it would likely be handled the same way that it was in GW1, in that guilds had strongholds that could be attacked as a separate map from the game.

Please can’t we have a game without open world faction based PvP….just once?

Also, why would the Inquest join non asura (who they see as inferior experimental slaves)? Why would the flame legion ally with Human bandits? The “Evil” factions are very much like 40K, they hate each other just as much as they hate you.

No – it depends on the kind of game you’re playing. We’ve said from the beginning that Guild Wars 2 is a game about heroes. If you’re playing a game about villains there should totally be choices to be a villain. What we wanted to do was tell a story that ends hopefully in the defeat of the dragons, and the choices of bad guy who would do that fall into anti-hero. So that was as far as we were willing to go.
