Colin Johanson on how arenanet measures success.
(Please no gear treadmills, Colin!)
I was looking for the chances that using an unidentified rare dye of a specific color will give you an actual rare dye. (I know it says the dye can be common, uncommon or rare, but I couldn’t find the chances.)
It seems these dyes are costly to craft, and I’m just discovering them now. How often do people gamble with these?
From my experience opening unidentified dyes, I would say it is not worth opening them. I will open one here or there just for fun, but from all the ones I have opened since I started playing, I would have been better off in the long run selling them on the TP and letting someone else gamble.
I’m not sure what the actual percentages are for getting rare vs uncommon vs common, but looking at prices on the TP for dyes and from my own experiences, I would say the chances for a rare are very slim.
I’ve never had any luck with using the crafted unidentified dyes. Not to say you’ll NEVER get a rare dye from using one, but it’s as much a gamble as the non-crafted dyes are.
What’s more, I haven’t had that much luck in selling them in their unused states, either. Given how many cooking mats they take to craft, I generally don’t bother with them.
I usually open all dyes that I find. Reason for this is most of the colors are really cheap and you would need a LOT of them to make any decent money from. But there’s that chance you get a nice rare dye. Two days ago I was leveling my guardian and a dye dropped. opened it and got celestial dye. I was absolutely shocked.
I sell mine. At 20 silver each pre tax, you can sell one and buy a bunch of basic dyes for your collection.
I was selling them. Decided that I liked the warrior that I am leveling so much that I would open every dye she got- only when I am playing her and only if she loots it. So far it has worked out well. I still sell them on every other character though.
The Bifrost recipe needs Unidentified Dyes. Not everyone is buying them for gambling purposes.
