As many have pointed out, the new extractor seems to be far from its worth overall compared to simply outright buying the sigil once again (save for a few rare exceptions).
However, reading through a few more posts and topics, one thing did come to mind that was a valid notation and that is with Ascended items.
At the current moment, Ascended items (not sure about weapons or armor) can’t be salvaged. This makes even the BLSK useless in terms of recovering Sigils/Runes from gear as it simply isn’t an option.
Taking that into perspective, another thought came into mind as the Extractor would primarily be for people with Ascended gear. Then it came to me, perhaps thats EXACTLY what its planned for?
As ANet has mentioned before, they’ve been trying to avoid the ‘power creep’ in terms of the gear treadmill of just getting better stats. But they’ve also expressed interest in improving/changing/adding new sigils and runes. What I think is the current process going on is that a new sets of Runes/Sigils will start to be tied to Ascended or a similar style of gear. Unsalvagable, therefore in order to recover any upgrades that would be desired you will need to purchase the Extractor or else you must face the continued RNG monster and hope you find an item with the stats and the new sigil/rune you desire. Being account bound, this would make things even more incredibly difficult to obtain than normal gear.
Depending on what these new upgrades possess, it might very well see a different change in its value in terms of the market and playerbase due to it being the only reliable way to ensure optimal play without an even more extensive grind. This is why I think it’s priced so high. It’s brilliant if you think about it.
However, this is just a possibility and merely an assumption of what I think is going on. Perhaps it is just for some basic upgrade removals and was never intended for anything more and its value was over estimated. Guess we’ll see.
