Mystic Forge Stones
Why not use them instead to forge exotic underwater weapons in the hope of getting a random precursor? Essentially 1 stone is 1 random exotic.
Actually, the OP isn’t about using the stones for item substitution.
Its about the use of the stones to make Mystic Salvage Kits. I do, also, agree with them.
I know that Anet isn’t directly in charge of the exchange rates of gems/gold, but at the current rates, which are actually pretty stable in general, this does make this an extremely expensive item for the forging of the MSK. The MSK already requires the purchase of the equivalent of 75 salvages, via the three highest level salvage kits, and then the use of the forgestone is what makes it sensical to get the 250.
I believe that it would probably be better to use something like Crystals/Philosopher’s Stones or something along that line, something you can puchase for skill points or some other kind of reward, to make these kits.
The Mystic Salvage kit is one of the greatest items in the game, imho, and is far better than any other kit, price wise even better than the Black Lion Salvage kit, though not stat wise.
In truth, however, even the BLSK requires 300 gems for 25 charges, thus making it cost about 24-30 g per kit. From this stand point the MSK seems practically a steal, however the MSK is a more common usage, having the lower return stats and all. Its whole purpose is to be used as a kind of 10 master kits in one, but the cost for that bag convenience is far outstripped by the price point.
So yeah….it would be nice to either change the reciepe, or lower the cost of the forge stones…..I’m thinking changing the reciepe would be better.
This is why I only craft the mystic kits when I receive the stones from AP chests.

Same. Only thing I use them for anymore is for making kits. I tried to burn through them on the mystic forge daily when tossing white items into it for the daily to save 50c…that’s how many of these things I get; they’re barely worth a few copper anymore. I still have over 100 from the AP chests and I keep getting more from black lion chests and occasionally from dailies. Sitting at about 115 still. I’d give them all to the OP if I could.

I used to do the same, but they’re been a real bag space saver and simple to make/convenient yet so inconvenient to make if you use them on a regular basis. Especially once you’ve gotten most of the achieves and it becomes a slow decline between AP chests.

I wish that was possible had a friend sitting on a similar amount but alas they’re account bound.

Not sure how that was constructive to my original post in any fashion but gratz I guess? I know they can be used in place of a piece of equipment for exo/rare recipes. But the main point was how the stones are hard to acquire for those wanting to regularly make MSK with the stones for normal use instead of the 25 charge kits.

Thank you Gany for hitting it right on the nail. Using Philosopher’s Stones or Crystals would make more sense than dumping a ridiculous amount of gold down the drain to make a kit that by far has been the best Salvage Kit in game besides the BLSK.
~Want to thank everyone whose replied so far, especially those who actually got the concept I was trying to point out in regards to Mystic Forge Stone cost in relation to making the Mystic Salvage Kit.

Nope, I think I read the OP’s post quite well, I’m just not saying what you – or he/she – wants to hear. Ultimately, the OP is talking about the value of the stones in gold; so was I. The value is a lot higher if you don’t use them to craft mystic salvage kits.
It’s like arguing that destroyer lodestones should be way cheaper on the TP because you want to use them to craft runes of the engineer.
I’ve always had the theory that mystic forge stones had a higher chance at returning a precursor. After all, the old tooltip showed something like “has a chance to give something better”
(one of my stone forges was a precursor)
I’m running out of Forge Stones too, and I would like to know how can I get them.
Daily rarely drops these. Even more rare than a BL Salvage Kit, and around the rate of a precursor -.-’

Is that really the conversion? because I’ve still got like 70-80 stones as I only use them on mystic salvage kits(and I usually make the kits in bulk, min 10 kits for my main). lol

Get more achievements. I got over 1 stack of these on bank and cant burn through them as fast I get more from these achievement chests.
Of course I dont waste them for convenience.
Wish I could honestly trade or sell them, would gladly give them to someone who wants them.
With me having the Salv-0-Matic, no real use for Mystics. (Got plenty of BLSKs too) so honestly they are just collecting bank space for me.
Don’t plan on using them for RNG forging either, too unreliable.

Mystics are incredibly valuable. Not sure why you are using them over the infinite kit considering it has a lower % return. I really hope you haven’t been salvaging all your rares with that inferior kit.

Any rares or exotics I get I generally use a BLSK for. Hence why mystics aren’t really all that handy for me. Use the Salv-0 for clearing out the blue and green junk overall that clutters space rather easily during dungeons, events or WvW stuff.
I find the mystics to simply be an unnecessary middle ground for me is all.

Using BLSKs on every exotic, let alone rares is a waste of gold. Only use them on armors/weapons guaranteed to give a chance at an insignia.
I can’t remember the exact rates since I ran out of BLSK a month ago, but a stack of BLSK could return a maximum of+125G but averaged about 60g or so. That’s +2G per use. This is why whenever I get a stack of BLSK from a daily I consider it like winning the lottery.
In fact, for a time, the gold/gem rate and the insignia/glob prices provided a window of opportunity to make, in theory, an ‘infinite’ gold loop.
I did the math a while ago. essentially, gold → gem would need to go below ~94s/100 gems for mystic salvage kits to be cheaper than master salvage kits. that hasn’t been the case since nov 16, 2012
Master SK = 15s36c / 25 = 61.44c each
at 94s/100 gems:
Mystic Forge Stone = 45 gems each. at 94s/100 gems = 42s30c each
Mystic SK = (15s36c + 8s + 2s88c + 3 × 42s30c) = 1g53s14c / 250 = 61.256c each
at 9g/100 gems:
Mystic SK = (15s36c + 8s + 2s88c + 3 x (9g/100*45)) = 12g41s24c / 250 = 4s96.5c each (4s35c more than Master, 8 times as expensive)
I use any mystic forge stones I get from AP on mystic kits, then only use master once I run out of those. I usually use MSK for salvaging rares, so an extra 5s added to the cost essentially eliminates any profit margin (instead of 30s for a 37s ecto you’re paying 35s for the 37s ecto)

BLSKs are outrageously expensive and are rewarded for daily completion infrequently, like once on month on average. I’ll use them on exotics and that’s about it.
Mystic kits are reasonable as long as you have a pile of Mystic Forge Stones gathering dust that you got for free, which I happen to have. They have the same % as Master kits. And back in the day when I was salvaging large numbers of rare armors for dust via ectos, they sure beat running across the square in DE to buy master kits. I only use Master and Mystic salvage kits on rares.
The Salvage o’Matic has the same % as basic kits which is fine in my book for greens and below but nothing else.
My characters always carry a Mystic, Basic and Crude salvage kits to shred what I find in the field and then shunt the mats into my collection tab.
RIP City of Heroes

What do you use Basic on? What do you use Crude on?
I’ll recommend this thread for you to read: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Salvage-Rates-results-on-rarity-of-Kit/first
TLDR: The stated % chance of rarer material is actually the % higher-than-base chance of rarer material (base is ~10%): Crude has ~10% chance of rarer, Basic has ~12% chance, Fine has ~13%, Journeyman has ~15%, Master has ~15%
If infinite SK wasn’t so convenient, I would use crude for all whites, blues, and greens.

Basic on greens, as I stated, crude on white and blue. The additional chance for a mat upgrade isn’t worth the cost in my book. I use basic on greens for the occasional minor sigil/rune.
While that thread shows that very specific salvage, cloth salvage items, produces higher rates. But in my tracking salvaged armors and weapons still have extremely low mat Tx+1 rates, below what’s stated.
RIP City of Heroes
I’ve still got 280+ in my bank. O.o
Previously I only used them for crafting Mystic Salvage Kits, but since the introduction of the Wardrobe which made me buy up a whole bunch of karma items for their skins, I started throwing them into the Forge to get back salvageable items. Even so, I’ve still got way more than I need.
