It should work. I believe when you use a name change contract, it says the name will be reserved for your account for 24hr.
I used a name change contract to change the name of an inactive/mule character and I was able to use that name right away when I made a new character.
They were two different characters, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for the same character switching back and forth between names.
