A friend gave me 10 stacks of giant wintersday gifts. What is the most profitable thing I can do with em? My friend told me save them incase Anet puts in new sick stuff this coming wintersday. I’ve looked up all the stuff u can get from it and it’s quite alot of gold possibly. Alternatively, i can sell the stacks and get like 12g a pop..

It’s possible new skins and toys can be introduced this winters day, but not likely. My money is one having it be a repeat of last year, like they did with halloween.

However, holding on to them to see if anything new is brought in, could pay off, but if not, you won’t be able to give those things away, and it will take quite awhile for prices to go back up, once they bottom out when the event starts. It might just be better to sell the stacks as is now, and not get stuck with them for another year. At least thats my opinion.

So opening them is a definite no then?

At this point it’s a gamble. It could pay off, but then again, if nothing new is added, you could stand to lose out on a bunch of money. Once the event starts, those winters days items will be very difficult to unload, and they will sell at just above vendor price. Everybody and their dog with have tons of them, and will have already gotten what they wanted from the event.

I wouldn’t say it’s, definite no, but it is a risk.

I mean opening them right now. The endless toy recipes are all worth as much as 1 stack approx so if I get just 1 of them per stack it’s already a good deal. Ascended recipes also worth a few gold and the exotic tonic and unbreakable choir bell are worth alot of gold. I have no clue on the droprates, how high is the risk. How likely is it to get less than 12g of items out of one stack?

Check the wiki and the subreddit, there should be a bunch of research on drop rates. You can calculate the average return from that.

If we consider the loot table change for trick or treat bags this year, there is a good possibility that they will do the same for the wintersday gifts. In that case, their value might increase shortly after wintersday goes live.
If they dont adjust it, their price will crash, so i would suggest to either sell them directly now or open them all now to make use of the still high prices for the drops.

Personally, i think they will adjust the droptables but also keep in mind that you can trade ugly clothing for the wintersday gifts, which will kinda hold any hard price spikes for the gifts in check.

The peak time to sell has passed – it’s been downhill since they hit their peak a few months ago, as people are less willing to crack them to ‘have it now’ instead of waiting a couple more weeks for them to be re-introduced. You can sell some now, for sure, and still get decent money for them, but I doubt you’re going to get a huge premium on them over what you’d get after the christmas patch hits.

The best time to sell at this point would be on the day the patch hits. Patch day is when the majority of players start paying attention to this again and demand surges as people race to get everything first. If there isn’t anything new introduced this year the surge may be pretty modest, but I’d expect to see a bit of a bump when the patch hits.

It’ll be a temporary bump, however, and you should expect the price premium to have disappeared by the weekend.

So if I could be around on patch day I’d list them one stack at a time at lowest sell, starting ~1 hour after the patch hits.

Did some more research, here a line out of their blog post:

On December 16, we’ll release our usual holiday-themed festivities with Wintersday. Both of these releases will feature the same content as last year but with refreshed rewards, giving you fun new festival-themed items to earn.

So same content and new rewards, just like Halloween. I expect new loot tables for the gifts.

I’m expecting a couple of new items, but probably recipes for items that are more expensive to make than what we already have, and anyway the product will be account bound.

Yeah, nothing wrong with account bound rewards though. Personally I like the new nourishments as it gives you new stats that werent available before. Some people still waiting on ascended givers recipes, which would be account bound anyways.

Oooh, would LOVE Ascended Giver’s recipes, but that contradicts ANet’s past stance about how they had no intention of creating Ascended tier for Giver’s.

Anyway, I fully expect that the Wintersday stuff will get some new goodies similar to what they did for Halloween. We’ll probably see a Wintersday collection too. We might also see the Winter’s BL weapons make a temporary comeback.

Do you have any links on Anets stance on ascended givers? I seemed to have missed their comment on that.

I don’t have any links, no, but I remember back when Ascended first came out and people noticed that no Ascended Giver’s gear was available. When questioned about it, someone (Colin or Chris Whiteside, maybe?) said that this was intentional.

Of course, that was two years ago, so it’s entirely possible that ANet has reversed its stance on it by now. We’ll have to wait and see (if the data miners dig up anything).

Well, given the fact that the snowflakes, which are used to make givers inscriptions and insignias are seasonal, i can see why they decided so.

Try to sell them before extra supply at the start of winters day tanks the price down to below 2s/box.

Beyond that, it’s more complicated. I think boxes will be much rarer this year than last year.

Last year, the achievements didn’t force you to do much of the content. (Year one you had to replay everything a ton of times). Also last year a lot of the open world boxes were gone. In other words, there weren’t all that many ways to acquire boxes.

(And this year’s Silverwastes content that may be running simultaneous to Wintersday likely won’t contribute many gifts, because mordrem don’t drop loot.)

However, none of that mattered last year once anet allowed PvPers to exchange a year and a half worth of Glory (that previously mostly sat unused) into winters day boxes. Everybody who pvped dropped dozens of stacks of boxes.

With this years winters day content likely a total rerun of last year (see Halloween), and no glory exchange, Wintersday boxes could be scarcer than people think.

Of course, even scarcity doesn’t matter if the boxes aren’t updated with more interesting loot.

Look at the loot table of last years gifts: mostly garbage. (Please keep in mind that the super expensive Sigils of Generousity didnt drop from regular wintersday gifts, but from the personalized gifts). Dumping more worthless altruism recipes doesn’t cut it. The snowflake market is still saturated. If the only new things are account bound ghost dogs, or separately purchasable minis, why bother.

Anet promised China that they would get all of the stuff that we got. This might be an opportunity for them to deliver. There are items like Keeper’s Recipes (5-80 gold each) that are overdue for a reintroduction. And there will probably be new items and a holiday themed collection. Some of them might be nice!

It may be a good idea to hold onto the boxes and open, or even buy more boxes if the following assumptions are true:

1. Winterday turns out to be a total rerun of last year, including low ish gift drops.
2. Wintersday loot is updated.

I can’t disagree with this post more.

First the price spike a couple of months ago was driven by a bunch of flippers who wanted to cash in on the minipet announcement.

They bought up Wintersday gifts stock, made a post on reddit about how the Wintersday mini was still available from gifts, and tried to sell to suckers.

Now is the right time to sell. There are individuals who will open up thousands of gifts day one to get drop loot data so that they can profit $$ before the community gets an idea of how to price the boxes. Even now they are buying up old socks and ugly sweaters.

After all, On day one, all leftover socks and sweaters from last year get converted to gifts and there’s a huge glut of new supply.

Today’s buy orders are better than the sell orders that you will get on day one.

On the other hand, under certain conditions (detailed above) the price of gifts could subsequently tick up.
