New town clothes - gender discrepancy
I too want my man-Charr to have some booty shorts.

I think that would be glorious, and that it’s a crime against fashion to deny charr the joys of hotpants.
There isn’t enough sexy clothes for males in this game, town clothes or armor. It makes me sad
I’m totally with you, Faowri.
I don’t care much about girls having sexy clothing that wouldn’t be useful at all on a battlefield, but I wish I could have sexy clothing on males as well, and I wish sometimes I could wear some pants instead of just a dress/mini skirt/string/sexythingiewhatever on my female characters.
So, yeah, more outfit design choices would be great.
1+ Yes please. <3
Females should get the option of wearing long shorts too.
I’m not a hot pants type myself, but I fully support you in expressing yourself.
Out of curiosity, how would you feel about cultural skins in the gem store? It seems to me like it might require a lot of work to make an outfit that fits all races. Would it be annoying to have more outfits available, but have some that only can be worn by a particular race?
I think it would be a good way to test how desirable an outfit is to the players by offering say, Sylvari only hot pants, and seeing how they sell and whether folks request a Charr version. I have no idea whether that makes sense from a technical perspective, but it seems like we would get more choices more quickly and help ANet focus their effort on what is popular.

I think when we’re paying real money for stuff, there’s honestly no reason why the work shouldn’t be put in to make those items high quality, including being available to all races in some shape and form. However, I definitely feel like a lot of the outfits in the gem store since release have been very human-y. Maybe it’d be nice to have race-themed gemstore months, with outfits inspired by the different cultures. However they implemented it, I’d definitely support less standard human clothing in there.
Gender disparity in clothing is still one of my major beefs with the cosmetics in GW2, though. It’s frustrating when ArenaNet have been so progressive with gender expression in other areas of the game, but they’re failing on this fundamental age-old MMO problem – the magic disappearing fabric when clothes are donned by wimmins.
And while the revealing clothing may irk some players on any gender (I’m for it as long as it’s optional), I think that the female versions of a lot of outfits often have a lot more detail and beauty than the male versions, which often look very samey and simplified by comparison.

I completely agree with this. The saving grace for me is that i rolled 2 asura and one sylvari male and a human female. If i rolled a norn i’d end up with a female also, simply since the armor on the men is almost always horrid. The race makes up for the really bad looks on the human race. There is a major difference between crafted exotics on an asura male than on a human/norn/sylvari male or female, it’s a million times less gaudy.
I’m asking you to think about how what you decide is a ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’ version of an item of clothing may not match the ideals of your playerbase, and to give us a choice.
Either:
- design one outfit, and give it to both genders.
- or design two outfits, and make both available to both genders
This is close to the top of my list of things I really want when I think “next-generation MMO.”
Yeah I kinda agree. Tho I never buy town clothes, since there is no real point in wearing it much (I’d like to have those riding clothes in combat), tho I pretty much understand why is it like that. Who would seriously like to see a character with boxing gloves and rabbit ears fighting dragons?
If you noticed, females always get more revealing stuff. I guess it reflects real life fashion to a degree. I never really saw any guys with very short pants outside.
Tho I must admit, very long, baggy swim pants for males compared to small bikinis for women kinda annoy me…connect the dots and it comes off as “males should hide their bodies, while females should expose as much as possible.” It’s so freaking ugly.
I even once asked why don’t guys wear shorties. Needless to say answers were pretty shallow and homophobic, so you try guess.

I have to admit, I’d probably giggle my rear off if I could fight Zhaitan with boxing gloves and hear the Brawl Champion jingle going off every 2 seconds. XD

Well yeah but it’s immersion-breaking :P Some people are kittening so much about that unicorn bow already (I personally don’t mind) but seeing stuff like that in combat would be a total mood killer lol
Oh yeah, certainly. It’s something I’d only do with a guildie-run for laughs. You bring up a good point though; is it any less immersion-breaking seeing someone shoot unicorns or confetti (Quip) at Zhaitan?
I think a good way to please everyone would be to have two types (What are currently the male and female versions) that you pick from when buying. It drives me crazy when my female charr uses male armor but female town clothes, I know some people like it but I always play male characters to avoid skimpy armor and the charr female was my chance to try a different gender in an MMO.
Letting people choose the type they want could please a lot of people, but don’t blame me when I can’t contain my laughter seeing a male norn wearing the Winters day dress!

It was called the 70s, and many difficult lessons must be learned on the path to civilization.
And here I was going to say all the town clothing for male characters was way to nancy-boy. Sorry, but I’d like something that wasn’t metro-sexual for once.

I never see guys wearing armor covered in spikes outside, either. I know it’s not necessarily what you meant to say, but it drives me nuts when “but girls wear less in real life!” is used to justify gender discrepancies in fantasy clothing. The sky’s apparently the limit when it comes to outlandish stuff we can wear in games, just as long as it doesn’t do anything crazy like challenge popular opinions of what is acceptable for men and women to want to wear or look like.
Personally, I’d welcome more exotic armor that was -less- revealing. I don’t like having to transmute, but IMO some of the skimpy clothing looks terrible on my sylvari mesmer so I transmute anyway. And frankly, I don’t want to stare at either my norn or my human’s pixelboobs.

I actually would like some sexy man clothes, its fairly easy (cant really avoid it) to get your female character to stretch sensuously in skimpy clothes but there’s nothing for the males!
My main is a female asura, and every outfit makes her look like an eight-year-old boy in a Halloween costume.

What exists for male characters tends to be imbalanced across the classes, too. Heavy armour has some gladiator/spartan looks going, and there’s like . . . one revealing male scholar armour, I think. Medium armour class men must be really sensitive to the cold or something ‘cause they’re decked out from throat to toes in most armour. There’s only a couple that even show their arms.

Simples?
So very simple, and it would make everybody happier. It’s no fun to look at something you want on a character of one gender, only to see it look completely different on a character of another gender.

Your does better than mine. She looked like a toddler. So she s not wearing any of that stuff.
The short pants are nice on the Charr female though. She gets to keep them, since none of the other would wear them.

At the same time, though, it kinda makes no sense. Because we have female charr wearing the same armour as the male charr because they’re not feminised by human standards, but they’re allowed to be humanly ‘girly’ when it comes to town clothes? If you’re going to enshrine it in lore, be consistent!
It just drives the point home for me that what’s feminine or masculine should be something the player decides for their characters. I have some female characters who are quite effeminate and would totally be seen in delicate frilly stuff, and I have others who are tough as nails and want the practical outfits that often seem to be exclusively contracted to the male gender in most MMOs. I was hoping GW2 would be a bit different, but this remains a sticking point even long after I gave up being annoyed by the laughable starter scholar armour discrepancy for the humanoid races.
Interesting article on some of this topic. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/05/boob-plate-armor-would-kill-you
^ Bikini/boob mail might be realistically impractical, but I’m personally not an opponent of fantastical sexualised armour as long as a) it’s not imposed on characters, but is an option for people who like that kind of thing, and b) doesn’t only exist for the female of the species, especially when the male version of the same outfit doesn’t resemble it at all.
