This is getting insane. I have played mmos for years and this is the most ridiculous I have ever seen it. If I were a new player I would be so overwhelmed with all the currencies that I would probably stop playing. All the tokens, commendations, laurels, guild currencies, perfect relics, karma, skill points, obsidian shards, it’s literally so ridiculous that I am losing my patience with it. The game has been out for what 6 months? You need to tighten up and get a grip on this. At this rate we’ll have a hundred different currencies before long.

You NEED to add a “currencies” pane, where it will list all the different currencies and how much you have of each – including stuff in the collectibles tab and bank.

The currencies are good. They are the result of a design decision made by the game designers to award specific rewards for specific content.

Now that the Devs decided that they want to give you specific rewards for specific gameplay, in order to reduce the RNG factor they introduce currency. After you do certain activities for a while, you’re guaranteed a reward. This is good. It’s less RNG. Imagine if dungeon armor was a random drop, instead of the token system right now.

So currencies is simply the symptom of a design decision they made. To specific things to specific activities. Now you may disagree with this decision, but to some length it is really needed to give players reasons to do these said specific activities which would be ignored otherwise. If there was a single currency with which you can obtain everything, no one will do difficult content, because they can earn the currency easier elsewhere. So in order to enforce rarity, Devs have to rely on RNG, etc….

TL;DR Multiple currency is good. It encourages players to vary their playstyle and reduces the RNG element in rewards.

Currency pane, collectibles section, forge recipe, exchange, something would be nice.

I’ve done two monthlies since launch and the result from both was filling up my limited bank space with account bound currencies I don’t have enough of to do anything with, but I hate to just destroy them. I probably would if there were something useful I could convert them to, but otherwise I hang onto them just in case.

I also really wish they’d expand upon karma more.

Agreed it’s kind of ridiculous and just highlights a back track from the whole gear treadmill and gating gear behind daily chores caused by all the new currencies, but pretty much everything in the manifesto has been backtracked or shone itself to be a lie so whatevs, all we can take from this stuff is Anet aren’t the trustable company that produced GW1 anymore.

Let us buy vendor mats (eg spools of thread) in 250 stacks, end the excessive clicking.

There would be no problem if you could carry around all these currencies without consuming space. AKA: Collectibles. The problem at the moment is what it would be like if you were carrying around money from 10 different countries. You can’t find what you want when you want and there is not enough space to store them in a manner which makes them easy to find.

Adding new currencies ensures that players don’t already have enough to buy items as soon as the patch goes live. Whether that’s a good thing or bad thing is up for debate.

Some could argue that it’s good because it means that players will have more things to do. But others could argue that it’s only pseudo content, because it forces players to do stuff that they have already done just to be rewarded adequately.

In any light, it’s pretty great for new players but less great for existing players.

Toons: Foreseer, Geikamir, Rapscallion, Specimen, Scythian, Zeau, Ärtifact, and Replica.

Just imagine if every single store out there had their own currency. And banks refused to convert currency to something you could use in another store. There can’t be a ‘black market conversion agent’ either because it’s all soul/account bound. That is what Anet is doing to the game right now. New content = new currency.

I got almost a million karma and nothing to spend it on (I don’t want to fill up my storage with whatever karma gets me for a legendary). I have several of each dungeon token but only because I had to for the monthly, so nothing to spend those on – don’t really like dungeons but can’t convert those stupid tokens to something useful to me. And various other item based currencies that I really don’t want to waste the storage on but it’s a ‘currency’ thus has more value than gold so I hold onto it in hopes of using it later.

I’ve made a few threads on this earlier, but they just keep piling on the currencies and doing nothing about the logistics of it all.
I can stack 250 of each but you HAVE TO HAVE more than a stack for some items… really really bad design decision.

Why does anet care if I have enough of some other currency to buy it with? That just means there aren’t enough useful things to buy with the already existing currencies.
Karma: I did good deeds, acquired karma and now I have absolutely nothing to buy with it (aside from that orrian something-or-other box). I can’t convert the equity of it to something else that might interest me more so I just accumulate more of it forever until it maxes out.

dude, this game has somehow morphed into grind game ala warcraft and every other kitten game. ready for the next game, not sure why devs lie but it’s not like people are stupid, people know what’s going on and are leaving the game. Hey league of legends sure sounds fun again.

PS, I’d love to see someone in particular called out on the kitten ups. Just man up and say Hey it was me, my bad. Cause y’all are really mishandling a game that people wanted to play. This is Asheron’s Call 2 and Diablo 3 all over again. Grind it into the ground more quickly please, I’d love a nice solid reason to just straight up quit instead of thinking “maybe next patch”.

Pretty much every currency in the game can be converted to gold.

Karma can be spent on Orrian Jewelry Boxes to make vendor trash items and lodestones. It can also be spent on items that can be put in the mystic forge, which results in items that can be sold on TP or to a vendor.

Dungeon tokens can purchase items that can be put in the forge.

Laurels can purchase crafting materials, unid dyes, or gear boxes.

Gems can be directly sold for gold.

Skill points can be used to promote crafting materials to more valuable ones which can be sold on the TP.

Guild commendations can (combined with 10s) purchase gear boxes, whose contents can be sold on the TP for more than the gold cost.

The only currencies that can’t be converted to gold are the guild bound ones (Merits and Influence, although gold can be converted to influence) and Glory which is exclusive to sPvP and is the sole currency for that part of the game.

You can think the exchange rate isn’t satisfactory to you, but you can’t claim that the currencies cannot be converted.

So, you can exchange currencies at a miserably bad rate for a currency that doesn’t buy you the things that are tied to the new currencies added every patch.

I think you may have missed the boat on this topic. Once you can explain how I can translate dungeon tokens, karma, etc. into ascended amulets and accessories, then you will be on point.

The answer to the currency issue is not, as you suggest, to spend all the other currencies to buy whatever you can. The answer is to institute an exchange system where X karma can be traded for Y laurels, and so on, or to stop adding new items every kitten patch that can exclusively be bought with a brand new currency. What the kitten is so wrong with being able to buy ascended accessories with karma?

Because it wouldn’t give you a reason to do Guild Missions, Dailies, and Fractals. It makes obtaining them incredibly easy, which is something Anet does not want.

You can convert your karma to gold, then use that gold to purchase a Triforge Pendant, glob of ectoplasm, and mystic coin. Then combine those with a fractal relic and voila, ascended amulet. There doesn’t seem to currently be a method to obtain ascended accessories with gold at the moment though.

But you’re the one who missed the boat here. Nearly every currency can be converted to gold. It doesn’t happen at an exchange that you want, but I can’t convert the empty aluminum cans in my recycling to dollars at the exchange I want either, that doesn’t mean there’s no method for me to get money for them.

A bit back on topic, you’re desperately begging the question here. Why should you be able to karma to ascended accessories? “Because you want to” is not a better reason for such a thing than “because Anet didn’t want you to” is as a retort. There’s a very simple and solid explanation why having multiple currencies is useful, and several people have made that point in this thread. Yet no one has been able to make an argument as to why everything should be purchasable via a single unified currency beyond “I want it.”

Actually, I’d say the “encouraging you to try and do many parts of their game” is their method of making “play the way you want” possible. By giving players strong reasons to expand their gameplay to a greater variety of content, they ensure that players who wanted to play that content without Anet’s prodding have the opportunity to do that. They’re still having some trouble with that in regards to story mode for dungeons. If the way I want to play involves unpopular content, I’m going to have a really hard time playing that way unless Anet incentivizes that behavior. I’d like to draw a parallel to Z-missions in GW1. I can’t be the only one who remembers it being nearly impossible to find groups for certain things prior to those coming along.

‘because i want it now and for no effort’ is the main QQing that i read on these forums. I really do not understand why people do not want to play the game in order to get the content they desire.

The laurals for some ascended gear is a wonderful idea. New players that started 1 week before the patch and people that started in beta both have the same opportunities to get this content. If it was available for gold, then the rich people would have instantly purchased the gear and the poor people would have to continue as poor for months before being able to afford it. This would create the ‘classes’ problem that everyone seems to wish to avoid (devs and players alike) j

Oh, and another funny in this thread. The question was asked ‘what am i to do with all my random dungeon tokens lying around’ an answer was given that they could be turned into gold and then the person that gave that answer was told to stay on topic.

From this i can only assume that the topic of this thread is ‘lets QQ about currency’ and that any solution or positive comments are not welcome lol!

As to story mode dungeons, well thats well off topic for this thread but i agree that there should be SOME type of reward other than just the unlocking on explorable. It is very hard to get a group for story mode as anyone that has done it before does not want/need to do it again!
