Phalanx armor: why the huge difference?
There’s been a TON of topics/complaints about this and not much(that I’ve seen at least) response from ANet about it.
I’m totally with you though that the disparity(not even going to mention the “sexified” nature of it) between the skins is silly. The male variant shares a common theme; the female variant feels like the set is made up of entirely different pieces.
shrug
Only option at the moment is to sex change or not purchase it.
Yea but really the male version has lots of clipping issues. Do I think we could get them to change it or fix it (the male one)? No, they won’t fix or redesign anything, they are prolly too busy working on new shiny stuff to put on the gem store.
They prioritize speed over than quality lately.
I agree that the female version looks terrible. The best thing we can do is not buy it on female toons and maybe ANET will see they can sell more if they make the female version equivalent to the male’s.
All my toons are male however so it doesn’t bother me too much.
The male version is perfect, I want an exact copy like that for my female warrior… EXACTLY like the male version, no boobage/clevage please!

There’s a ton of boxy armors in the game to choose from already. The few revealing female heavy armors that are finally released gets complaints? I personally love the female phalanx armor and would like to see more like it. If you don’t like, then don’t buy it. Please don’t come on here demanding it be changed because there are many players who like it.

The reason people have been complaining is not that revealing female armour exists, but because the phalanx armour looks nothing like the male version. This is not an uncommon occurrence with GW2 and leads to two problems:
- Restricted access to armour based arbitrarily on character gender
- A lack of revealing male armour.
Please don’t kneejerk into “don’t take away my sexy armour!” whenever this topic gets raised. A tonne of perfectly legitimate feedback threads on this problem were deleted because people drove it miles off topic into discussions about armour practicality and whatnot. Not the issue, not the issue at all. The issue is the restriction on choice and the limiting of armour diversity.
The phalanx set’s gendered versions are so different they should have been two separate armour sets.
What people want is the awesome look of the male phalanx version on a female. Do not get me wrong, the female version is nice in its own right, but those of us that have saw the male version and thought “hey that looks awesome, I cannot wait to get that on my character” only to find the female version of that look doesn’t exist, it is quite disappointing. If the female version was part of another set that had a male version that looked similar, I would have no issues with it.
The issue isn’t the female version or how it looks, the issue is people wanted a female version of the phalanx armor that looks like the male plated version.
Hence, unfortunately, why I did not buy an armor that I am sure is a big success on individuals that are playing male characters.

I wonder how many gems anet didnt earn with this kittenty choice. At least 800
Vizunah Square
This is my favourite heavy armor by far :/.
We just don’t have enough skimpy/classy/sexy heavy armor. Just look up an armor collection, about 80% just makes you look like a tin can, and is just the same thing over again.
Phalanx is some very much needed variation, And changing it so it mimics the male version would completely remove all the things I enjoyed about it so much.
Warning: link may contain traces of awesome.

They earned at least 1600 from me thanks to that choice that they wouldn’t haven gotten else
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Yes yes and yes. Buddy have you seen the Ascended armors ? jesus, those armors look horrible. What about some armors with a more realistic look ?
This is some of the things i want to see in the game..
Ps. Sorry bout the pics
And don’t get me started on Shields..

That assumes that both divergent armours couldn’t have been released in two separate sets, allowing players to choose what aesthetic they liked instead of being told “Girl? No pants for you. Guy? No air for you.”
This doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. Sets where one version looks completely different to the other version should be two separate armour sets, end of. Then Anet gets everyone’s money and everyone is happy.

That would work for me.
The male and female torso (chest) parts of the armor look fine as they are, strong looking for the male, and sexy for the female. I’m just not a fan of the female helmet and would rather that both versions shared the male helmet version.
I’d get immensely disappointed to spend 800 gems for the female version just for it to get remade to look like the male version later on. I bought the Phalanx set because of how it looks on the female, I already knew I wasn’t going to wear the helmet/shoulders.
I saw a norn woman looking pretty good in it but it certainly works better in the male version. Hopefully future armors will offer women the chance to wear something that looks useful. It can still be sexy without baring flesh, imo.
The question is why they did it, though, and only ANet can answer that.
And Crane, that last picture of the landsknecht? I WANT THAT ARMOR. Just like that, for men and women. Taper the waist a bit on women, add a bit of lace at the cuffs if you must, and voila. Sexy and practical. That hat is what I’ve wanted for my main since pre-beta, too (he’s a Thief so it would have to be a multi-weight skin).
The male version is perfect, I want an exact copy like that for my female warrior… EXACTLY like the male version, no boobage/clevage please!
the female version is disgusting. the metal high heels are the most pathetic crap i’ve ever seen.
The female version looks awesome. Been thinking about making a heavy female just for that set.
I bought the phalanx heavy skin so my guardian can wear a skirt that’s all I’m using from the set, though. Still worth it!
Oh yes, this bugs me. Just checked out the skins (I’m a bit late to the party) and I’d want the male skin on my female guardian so much.
The exact opposite is true for the Phoenix armor: would love that on my Asura elementalist, but alas, the male version has zero feathers, nothing “phoenix” going on and just doesn’t look at all like the original.
My suggestion would be to not alter any existing sets, but to create new counterparts based on existing armor. So for example, a male Phoenix set that does have feathers, and a female Phalanx set that looks almost like the male version.
The male and female torso (chest) parts of the armor look fine as they are, strong looking for the male, and sexy for the female.
Because females can’t be strong, and males can’t be sexy?
