in Queensdale last night to this morning I gave away ~500ish dyes. and 20ish gold. I am now poor with 10ish gold.
Why? Because I am the Wicked Itch of the West. HAHAHAHAHAHAHa
That’s awesome, to give away something that you already got for free. I’m guessing you got them from duplicate dyes. That’s the kind of thing I like enjoy hearing about.
I sometimes help people I know and like with items. I never give gold. I never give to people who ask for free items, or who are telling me a story of how they need/like item x,y, or z in the hope that I’ll give it to them.
Sometimes the items I give are worth a lot, sometimes not. Mostly they were ascended mats, exotic inscriptions, silk etc to help people leveling to 500. Or weapons and armor while levelling. Occasionally I gifted a crafting booster or something similar to those that needed it at the time. Sometimes I told someone about a goldmine on the TP and withdrew from that market completely to give him/her full room. I once let my guild search for me in LA and the winner got a Pyre dye.
In any event, I only give because I enjoy it, not because I think I should.

Since the start I’ve given away probably close to 200G, which is a really really small %
I used to run around Queensdale and send 1g to random people (adding to friendslist to see if they are in fact new).
I don’t do it anymore cause, meh.
Also, I’ve come across quite a few people who get greedy and ask for more, and I hate that.
I never gave away gold to somebody i didnt knew but helped out plenty of guildies and friends. Its not that i cant afford it but i think it promotes begging in map chat. People should earn their own gold or buy some with cash.
On one of my old servers, we had a guy giving away gold all the time in LA, to the person who first wrote “me” in map chat after he asked who wants gold.
It made me avoid LA because it ruined map chat.

I’ve been wanting to give away gold, but I haven’t seen any heart-wrenching-enough and sincere pleas. most people are yelled at when they ask, so that kinda discourages anyone else. not to mention there is something to be said for how much you appreciate things earned yourself instead of given to you (I love my sunrise after all those hours of making it compared to barely remembering I have kraitkin because I bought it off the TP).
I’ve been considering just giving 1g to all forum members who post something like “Hi, I’m new here, which profession should I pick?”

Hi, I’m new here, which legendary should I pick?
got room on that bandwagon for someone who likes free gold?
and refuses to spare the life in return for the surrender at discretion (unconditional surrender)

I can finally use up all those stacks of keys that i bought with gold and were clogging my inventory…

I do regular give aways and contests for our server radio promotion. It really does bolster the community, makes people excited and participate regularly in server wide initiatives. I’m not by any means in the top 1% or even 20% in wealth though.
I won’t name names, but there’s a person on my server who is known for having a ton of gold/items, who regularly gives stuff away. It’s pretty impressive. <3

I enjoy seeing this, and knowing that the rich players of Guild Wars aren’t all just greedy

THAT is an awesome plan…..
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Send me all the chests you can pls!! Free stuff that i can sell on tp sure why not!
The only things I’ve ever given away were Wintersday skins and occasionally surplus dyes.
Honestly, I’d like to be able to give away more impressive stuff now and then, but I’m far, far, FAR from a “1%’er” to the point where I can really afford to give much of anything substancial away. I mean, I guess I could technically give stuff away anyway, its not like I’m dirt poor and running around in blue gear or anything and I have a few interesting limited-time items in my bank that would be nice giveaway items, but I do still have a lot of different skins and stuff I’m looking towards getting as a long-term goal (no legendaries, but some decently expensive stuff like The Crossing / Arachnophobia). And beyond that I should probably think about Ascended gear at some point, though I’ll probably put that after skins since I’m more about the visuals than the stats.
Plus, I’d rather give away stuff to people who will actually use it, not give my stuff away just for people to turn around and sell. I’d rather give a Desert Rose skin to someone who really wanted it and couldn’t afford it off the TP than give it away to someone who was just going to sell it towards a legendary weapon or something. But its darn near impossible to tell that sort of thing without blatantly asking “Hey, anyone who would actually use a Desert Rose skin?” and that’s a little too obvious and half the people would probably just lie anyway.
Better to find someone in chat who just happens to be talking about really wanting a skin or something, but for some reason I rarely ever see that sort of talk. The one time I did was during Bell Choir where I was talking with someone who was a music major and really wanted the unbreakable choir bell so he was grinding Choir like crazy hoping to get it, but at the time I was really short on funds (I’d spent a lot of what I had on Dreamthistle weapons the month before) so I couldn’t afford the outright purchase, and the bell didn’t drop for me either. And then I forgot his username anyway, so… yah, grand gesture brought to a halt by many factors, heh.
this is cool ^^
i personally dont like helping people i dont know incase they turn into someon horrible, but my guildies and other friends i help i think i must of nearly got through my entire guild helping them with there legendaries, me and my brother made it our mission to make sure our entire guild had them so ive always been close to 10g :C
ive recently stopped though due to handing over around 600g in mats to this one member and my brother gave him dusk in which he thanked us by leaving the guild and transferring (yeah made me sad :C)

I give away stuff all the time. The most valuable stuff goes to friends, e.g. I gave a lot of high-gold valued presents. Any time I start chatting with a newbie in /map, I usually send them some silver and some dyes — I don’t want to give them a lot of coin (and thus spoil their introduction to the game); it’s just enough so they don’t have to sweat the small stuff.
The dyes are minor luxury items that don’t seem affordable to most new players (especially since the drop rate nerf that accompanied the account-bound change to the wardrobe).
I am, however, a lot more generous with my time. I’d much rather teach people how to fish than to give away gold. I’ve probably helped around 20 strangers learn to play the TP (and incidentally: of them, only 2-3 felt it was worth their time).
(I’m, erm, 99% sure I’m not one of the 1%ers, based on watching the vids for people who do industrial production of precursors and other power traders, not to mention seeing the bling worn by people in my WvW guild — I just have more coin than most of the people I play with regularly.)
