It has been bothering me for quite some time but I had not been able to fully confirm until I finally managed to reach 450 in weaponsmith that the market seem rather ludicrous in the sense that crafted items are not sold at the propper price.

Pulling it up in numbers I realized that a sword I was making cost over 6g to make as per the cost of materials, but the highest seller had it at just over 3g making it half it cost to actually make it.

This seems to be the same for all crafted items, and whilst it may be good in terms of cheaper items, marketwise its unrealistic.

Of course I decided to start selling my swords at 9g to get some profit, but it makes me wonder if others have not realized this or if there is something I dont know and Im doing wrong.

Crafted items will always be cheaper than the mats because people will dump the equipment they craft on the tp when leveling their crafting.

The extra you pay for materials is actually for the crafting experience

Mauveine – 80 Mesmer, Bashastick – 80 Warrior
Basha Blue – 80 Guard, Cat Harsis – 80 Ranger
And many more… on Crystal Desert Server (NA)

There are many postings on the TP that grossly undervalue the items they’re trying to buy (even some idiots who post 1c for items sellable to vendors), and they hope to catch lazy or uninformed sellers who won’t question the price.

However, the other half of it is that the demand is low enough and the supply is high enough that the price of crafted items is indeed lower than the sum of the materials used to craft them. This isn’t extraordinary. You’ve been making lots of exotic swords, but how many other players out there are also doing the same thing? If it isn’t matched with players looking to buy the swords, then the price will drop.

With crafting in MMOs, people also tend to look at an actual cost to level up crafting disciplines, simply because the process of improving produces lots of unwanted items at the cost of highly demanded crafting materials.

Yep. That 3g loss you took is actually your Weaponsmithing tuition cost.

Edit: I basically said every thing that Bob just said, I believe we answered simultaneously, sorry of the redundancy.

This is basic supply and demand me thinks.

Generally, in my experience, the level 80 exotics you can craft are less desirable than they once were (due to ascended, legendaries, Named drops.) I would have to imagine that 75% (totally made up number) of the exotics sold on TP are simply Mystic Forge fodder; something people will not pay top dollar for. Comparing this to the mats required to craft, which have a wide variety of uses and are almost always needed in high quantities, it makes sense that the cost to craft would be higher than the sell price.

Also, consider that a good percentage of the crafted exotics for sale are made by players just like you. People who spent a ton of money to advance their crafting level and want a quick return on their investment.

putting your items at 9g, doesn’t gurantuee they’ll sell, in fact huge chance they won’t…alot of people want to sell their item first… so they place it at a lower price,
than someone else places it lower and so own.

Its very difficult to make money with crafting, however with research, it’s also very possible.

Yes I know and Im willing to risk it, and in spite of what everyone says about supply an demand, though logical, its still implying that I should sell a product for less than the cost of the bus ride I took to get to the place I want to sell it. A bussines practice such as the one stated in real life, would mean that I would willingly owe more money for each item I make and keep making them beyond bankrupcy.

The only solid plan here would be to forgoe crafting and concentrate on farming for crafting materials which retain a solid price.

I understand the points here…but the kicker is that the crafting of items is not done exclusively as a means of making a profit. I know that my own crafting was specifically for the purpose of leveling so, at least for me, the gold I spent was sunk costs. After the fact, I will possibly sell them for whatever I can get but making a profit..or even making my money back is not a primary concern.

If I were running a business whose sole goal was engaging in commerce for the purpose of profit…yes, you are dead on. But selling my crafted items is, for me, a secondary activity at best.

Blame Ascended crafting. Before Ascended, one could only craft exotic items at the former crafting cap. Now, crafting them helps one to reach the new cap. This creates increased supply.

Meanwhile, Ascended is now best in slot. This lowers demand for exotics. The result of lower demand and increased supply would normally be lowered prices.

Three gold for an Exotic crafted sword (depending on stats) is not that far off from prices when exotics were BIS. However, once Ascended crafting was introduced, prices for many crafting mats increased, including some of the mats needed to make exotics. This resulted in increased costs for crafters.
