1. just buy him the armor and dyes and mail him those. edit or use the guild vault to send him what he wants.

2. Yes you should try to think before posting, better luck next time

1. Yeah. You can just purchase those gems and commander’s compendiums for your friend and mail them to him. Oh wait. Those things are soulbound as soon as you buy them so you can’t mail them. Or hey. Why just send you friend a few gold to help out for the precursor weapon when you should just drop a few hundred and buy it for him.

2. So all the friends you make in GW2 are now supposed to leave their guild to join yours?

3. Perhaps before you attack people for not thinking before posting, you should first make sure that you yourself are actually thinking.

Sorry, but I buy my husband’s clothes and other things in real life. Not doing it in a game. He can do that himself.

We send each other money when the other doesn’t have enough. It’s bad enough we get limited after two messages when sending crafting supplies to each other.

Bad idea all around.

Mailing gold shouldn’t be desabled but the the whole issue with the black market gold, there are so many bots and such and I know we all have reported them and nothing has been done yet. And now I am starting to think it might be anet selling the gold for extra profit from the game. No disrespect to anet and the devs and all, but that thought has crossed my mind. Let the cheaters be cheaters, they want to do it let em, its them waisting their own money on a fantisy game. Well those are my thoughts about it take it how y’all want.

Throwing around words like punishment, is not constructive nor a viable argument.

You know what also is not a constructive nor a viable argument? Repeatedly ignoring or dismissing every criticism of your suggestion because you don’t like the word “punishment”.

Is it punishment to remove 41 karma weapons for the people who didn’t buy them? Is it punishment to expect players to level to 80 before having access to all the game’s content? is it punishment to expect players to work for things in game period?

Is it punishment to expect you to pay money before playing the game? Is it punishment to cut off your hand if you undercut me by 1c on the trading post?

Asking a series of rhetorical questions about completely different things is also not a constructive or viable argument. Sure, none of those things is punishment, but that doesn’t in any way imply that removing mailed gold wouldn’t be an undue burden.

But we are not in the real world, we are in the matrix, where Anet CAN remove the ability of people to circumvent their ability to make profit.

And the government CAN stop the postal service which would cut down on the amount of illegal things sent through the mail. Does that make it a good idea?

For a different example, shutting down the Internet would remove the ability of people to view and send child pornography over the Internet. Does that make it a good idea?

For me, the most important problem on the economy in gw2 is the gold sellers/bot and therefor might be hackers on looting accounts for it.

I wounder why no one came on the idea at arena net to solve this problem by stopping the gold-sending per mail.

This would make it almost impossible for the gold sellers to send their gold to their costumers oder to “loot” an account for gold.
In the next step it would make no more sense to bot and would limit that problem a bit too.

For friends it would be still possible to trade a bit gold over a guild vault/bank. However that could be abused by sellers, but it would be much harder as you need a guild per person you send gold, you need influence and so on. And you could overwatch guilds which just opend and research only the guildbank.

With no other option available to goldsending, it would linder the problem and almost not affect the majority of the players at all.

Really, and how would I for example, send gold to my other half for her dye addiction if this was implemented?

How would I donate gold to people in WvW for their Commander icon fund, if they’re in a different guild from me (ie: I cant just deposit it in the Guild Bank)?

How do I send my friends a few silver if they’re short for an item they need, or have all their cash tied up on the TP, and need a repair?

Yeah. Terrible idea.

Yeah, anything legitimate players can use to send gold to each other, gold sellers can use to send gold to players. Gold sellers are, after all, using player accounts to run their business.

Therefore, any attempt to curb gold selling by cutting down what players are allowed to send to each other will amount to punishing all legitimate players for the actions of a few, and would thus be one of the worst ways they could “solve” this problem.

Because this can lead to griefing

If i am in an area farming, and someone comes along and sees me botting, or is just rubbed the wrong way, or even…heck…just immature and wants to rub his jollies, he can report me as a bot 10 times and suddenly I am disconnected.

Same thing can happen in WvW. Someone stands on the fort of WvW and targets an enemy and begins to report them over and over and ‘poof’ they go away until they are…administrated.

I dunno, I’m just tired of walking past the same group of bots in every zone for days at a time. I feel Anet really needs to step up and take care of them before it really gets out of hand.

If you want to kill the rather vibrant community event, erm, community that migrated to GW2 from GW1, the way to do it is taking away direct mail of gold/items. It is already hard enough to host giveaways and contests without the ability to do face-to-face trades, removing mailing as well would make it virtually impossible. Personally I do not think that is a sacrifice worth making just to inconvenience gold sellers.

Also, aforementioned families and friends using the mail to help each other out.

I love the “ban the botters/sellers” responses as well as “ANet needs to lower gem costs”.

Here’s how gold sellers thrive:
1. Gold seller spams chat about site.
2. Less than intelligent person goes to site to buy gold.
3. Gold seller then hacks said players account.

You can’t get rid of sellers because there is always going to be someone that wants to take the easy way out. Since sellers/botters do little to no actual work, and the majority of the gold comes from hacked accounts, it doesn’t matter how cheap gems are as the sellers are ALWAYS going to sell for less. If ANet sold 100g for $10, gold sellers would do $5. If ANet does 100g for $1, bots would do it for $.50. Gold sellers ALWAYS make a profit regardless and, short of removing all trading of any kind from the game, they will ALWAYS exist.

I don’t understand why the ability to mail gold is currently in place?

There is no trading by mail so it is not needed there.

All inter-account trading is done through the account wide bank

All trades are done through the TP

As far as I can tell the one and only reason for being able to mail gold is so you can buy gold from gold sellers. If you remove this option you instantly shut down 100% of gold sellers and lose absolutely nothing in the process?

That is a surprisingly ignorant statement to make. As other users have said, there are many genuine reasons to mail gold to other players.

The user below, and other people who have responded have made valid points.

What about if I want to mail my buddy a few gold so he can buy himself some armor or dyes or w/e? There are reasons to mail gold.

1. just buy him the armor and dyes and mail him those. edit or use the guild vault to send him what he wants.

2. Yes you should try to think before posting, better luck next time

You do realise that some items are soulbound when bought right? Or that some players send items for gold to skip the TP listing fee? Or even to get other users to buy items off TP for them because their’s doesn’t work?

Examples where I have sent/received gold:
1) TP did not work for me for three days – I could not purchase items and I was trying to hit 400 in crafting, instead I mailed gold to my friend, he bought the mats, sent it back to me.
2) I collect mini pets, but some aren’t worth listing on TP due to the listing fee. I sell these to my friends and subtract the TP fee out of it (going on the logic that I would’ve paid for it anyway), my friends get the item cheaper. Yes, I’m aware that I’ve taken out the TP listing fee, but even if I listed it cheaper, A – there is no guarantee that they can buy it before someone else does, and B – I will still pay the listing fee on the cheaper price.
3) New character, DEAD with no cash, and no way to teleport to a Waypoint – OR if you’re in the level 75-80 areas, all waypoints around you are contested, no players in sight, undead everywhere, same thing, no coin or not enough coin cuz it’s been spent on repairs, ask to borrow coin to get to a waypoint. And before anyone suggests it, no, I am not carrying around my bank savings on my character. There is a gold horder title that I’m after, and I’d rather my characters live off coin that they’ve accumulated organically rather than constantly withdrawing from the bank.
[cont…]

Alisana.9451

[…cont]

4) WvW – fighting in an area, need to buy a seige, can’t run outside to the bank because invaders are hammering on your front gate (plus you’ll need to get past them on way back [contested waypoint] AND time is precious in WvW). Ask friend to send gold, buy seige to defend the keep/outpost.
5) Exotic Weapons/Armour – I couldn’t craft them and my friend had mats, but given the cost of them, I sent him money to compensate/offset the cost of the materials.
6) One of my friends sends all his high end mats, unidentified dyes, mystic coins, etc to me as he isn’t bothered with chasing down the legendary weapons. Same thing, as compensation, if he wants a new armour set, I’ll send him money to get it. Again – some sets are soulbound on acquire.
7) Use of guild bank for transfers: No. Just no. The guild I’m in, only Officers can remove items from the guild bank – this is to prevent new members, or even general members from withdrawing things they’re not supposed to. I saw a suggestion of having influence related to how much you can withdraw, good idea – however if you have the CE, you get influence items (Tome of Influence, Chalice of Glory, etc) – there are work arounds to boost your influence to access the bank. The other thing with guild banks is if everyone can touch them, you have no guarantee that the intended will receive the gold. The other issue you can face is the Nigerian Scamming act or if a player “grooms” a guild, gains their trust, then bam, everything gone. There are manipulation artists out there, and they don’t care about how much time they invest into getting what they want.

While I understand that bots and gold sellers are a serious issue that needs to be addressed – I don’t think harming legitimate players is the way. There are other methods; for instance where you can scan for ‘odd’ mail where if there is a new account that is sending out gold repeatedly, to stop that or bottle-neck it. Or even something that can detect if a macro is running or communicating with the GW client and send the user a warning, get them to verify themselves, and if they fail, to kick them. (An old game I used to play when I was younger sent players “rubics cubes” that you had to solve if you were idle or repeating the same actions over and over, or you’d be teleported somewhere random – if it is a genuine player, they’re rewarded with ‘soulbound’ cosmetic items, if it’s a bot, they get kicked).

Removing the option to send gold will only harm your legitimate players – bots and gold sellers need to be targeted from a different angle.

The difference between rich player and poor players in this game is staggering. The guys who got in immediately and cheated and manipulated the market are on top, and they will stay there forever.

Now you are just saying ridiculous things. It is incredibly easy to get more than 3g at one time without ever playing the TP or cheating or anything else you’re accusing “rich” players of doing. After all, level 60 manuals are 2g each, and I suspect most level 60 characters are able to afford those.

The TP doesn’t work that way. If you put it in for 16 silver, you will get that amount – 15%. You should have gotten 14 or so silver at the least. If not then you probably mischecked and put the item in for 3s.

name one that does not include the TP. i can make a gold in an afternoon farming cursed shore. most of the time though i have less than 20 silver on me. Crafting needs to be pumped, items need to be repaired, gem prices were 15 silver for 100 at the biginning of the game and theyre pushing up to 80 occasionally now. I can no longer sell an exotic item for more than the price of mats, so there’s no money there either.

I can maintain and get by, even improve my equipment very slowly. But every person you see with a blue arrow over their head? that costs 100 gold. It allows you to have 40 players in your party instead of 5. Am I ever going to see one? No. Not anymore.

This idea stinks. I have friends and we send each other items all the time. If I get a weapon I cannot use, I send it to them, if they get a weapon they cannot use, then they send it to me. etc.. food gets sent back and forth between us. One of us cooks, and shares etc…

Sometimes one of us is low on gold, and need s an extra few silver for their manual, and we each chip in.

I guess here is where you say " create a guild." to which my responce is.." no." I do not wish to create a guild to do a work around for something EVERY MMO already has. it is Not my responsability to find a work around to not being able to mail money and things to friends. it is Anet’s responsability to get rid of bots.

That said… How come no one discusses the true culprits? those that BUY Gold from third party Gold sellers. If there is NO demand there will be no supply. And yet, these same people discuss non-chalantly How low third party gold seller prices are compared to Anet’s as if it were an acceptable alternative… hiding behind their. ’ Oh, Not that I would EVER buy from a Gold seller…but..Anet charges too Much… just saying."

People do not like bots, and gold seller spam. People do not like the effect they may be having on the market. But then they turn around and BUY Gold because they want a good price. These are the same rationale used by people that buy counterfeit goods, or things that " fall off the back of a truck."

People need to accept there is ONE acceptable avenue to purchase gold, if purchasing Gold is a necessity.

On that note.. finally… Anet needs to bann anyone caught purchasing Gold from Gold sellers. No suspensions..Just ban them, and make it known. THEN this will become a dis-incentive for others that also buy but were not caught.

The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.

Oh c’mon how many people really stay naked in a dungeon and really have no money(!) to repair? About 0,1% of it? so 99.9% must live with gold sellers and botters?
And yes if someone goes into a dungeon with less then some silver in their pocket i would blame them and not anet.

If you want to send gold to a friend, your wife or what-so-ever you like, use a guild bank. You can live with that option.
You can still send items directly to your friends, so thats no problem at all.
How often you need to send direct gold? Almost never. Send the item and thats it – and if you really need to send gold go to a guild bank or ask someone in a guild to help you, thats only a little bit uncomfortable but protects the game a big time.

The option “then they use the TP” is not valid. First they lose Gold. Second: Selling in the TP is anonymous. You cant buy exactly “that” item….so what those lousy Goldsellers do then, when they dont know which of those 1000 offers are yours on that item, AND ANet could change that the TP only shows the ~20 cheapest offers on the TP – then the Sellers have absolutely no chance anymore!

Removing send gold option will not make it any harder really. As long as there is a way to transfer gold in any way, gold sellers will use it. While I agree that it would be possible to flag fishy TP sales, the same could be said about gold mails. Or people would start sending the gold through items, that the recipient can then resell. It’s not very complicated.

This thought-of solution seems more like a desperate wishful thinking.

The interesting thing is that these botters, assuming ANet does indeed ban a lot of them on a regular basis, seem to be able to afford so many GW2 keys. Based on the prices of some of the sellers, they would have to make 100-200 gold per account – and sell it – to actually make a profit. (Scammers we do not care about, since they do not have an effect on the economy, or spam places with bots)

Now the way to fight this is to find ways to identify them before they make that much gold in the first place, otherwise they will just keep making new accounts over and over again, or related to that, make it harder for them to accumulate gold in a short amount of time, increasing the chance that they will get banned before they get enough gold for sale to pay for that banned account.

:Edit:
And it’s quite possible to use the TP in that manner. There’s plenty of items with no sale offers on the TP, so you can dictate the price on those. And it still leaves the send items via mail, that could then by the person be resold for the gold in the end. Whether or not it slightly reduces gold sellers income is of no consequence, they will still be making money.

:Edit2:
In fact, going to the roots of these problems might actually be even better. Find out where those accounts come from. Who is selling them. Enforce phone activation (you have internet, you have a phone), suddenly the whole thing of creating a throw-away-bot-farm-account can be identified, tracked and dealt with much more easily.

I believe ANet once stated that the vast majority of accounts the gold sellers use are hacked/stolen accounts. This is usually accomplished by installing keyloggers on your computer when you visit their site to buy gold. They then sell you the gold after you’ve paid the money, and then a few days later, after they’ve had time to narrow down and pinpoint which of your passwords belong to your e-mail and GW2 account, they log on to your account, change your password, liquidate all your assets, then steal back any gold still remaining on your account to sell to another hapless victim within the same day.

If you have even one friend in this game, you’d know why the suggestion is utterly rediculous to start with.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

The interesting thing is that these botters, assuming ANet does indeed ban a lot of them on a regular basis, seem to be able to afford so many GW2 keys. Based on the prices of some of the sellers, they would have to make 100-200 gold per account – and sell it – to actually make a profit. (Scammers we do not care about, since they do not have an effect on the economy, or spam places with bots)[…]

Gaile Gray.6028:

We’ve blocked tens of thousands of bots since the game was released. 3,000 on a single October day, and hundreds upon hundreds on other days around that one.
Our Security Team is hard at work on new initiatives that will help address the bot situation. We know it’s an irritating situation, and we’re committed to correcting the problem through a wide variety of means.

OK – so what is stopping gold sellers from using a Guild Bank? Or joining a big name guild and using that as a masquerade to hide their true intent? “Oh, we’re giving them 100G for the commanders title…” plus you can join an infinite amount of guilds, so you’re back to the same situation again.

Ok guys its pretty obvious that the guild wars game is having a major hacking issue right now. I am reading these forms and hundreds if not thousands of players are getting banned accounts for "taking part in or assisting in gold or real money trading etc…

Would someone please kindly release some form off statement as soon as possible to let everyone including myself know what the issue is and how you plan on rectifying it…we all love guild wars very much and this experience is begging to tarnish it.

Thank you.

What you are stating is not true.

Accounts are stolen every day. It’s a sad fact of life that players use passwords on multiple locations, use a weak password, share their account, or do something else that results in the account’s theft.

We have not experienced a security issue. These are individual issues. And while you’re seeing perhaps a dozen posts a day about this subject, hundreds of thousands of people are playing without incident. I believe that Mike O’Brien stated that the percentage of people whose accounts were hacked was about one tenth of one percent of all account holders.

Please do not post alarmist comments about “major hacking issues” that do not exist. Each person whose account was compromised should submit a ticket to Support and, for faster service, should provide the information in the “How to submit a ticket” thread above.

1. just buy him the armor and dyes and mail him those. edit or use the guild vault to send him what he wants.

2. Yes you should try to think before posting, better luck next time

1. The man wants to send money to his friend so his friend has enough money to purchase the product. The man sending money can’t/doesn’t want to dish out an unnecessary amount of coin to accomplish that.

2. Pay attention and think before you post. Better luck next time.

Well… you shouldn’t inconvenience the regular players to combat bots//gold sellers. Removing mail is going to hurt the playerbase seriously while not harming the bots one bit. It would do more bad than it would do good.

All talk about guild banks in spite, that’s not a solution at all. A.net should combat bots by combatting bots, not by combatting normal players. eg there is a mailing cap on gold already for the first month, that seriously hampers gold farmers while not being a problem for regular players in the slightest.

Also, there is no hacking problem for the vast majority. I have a very long and unique password, I use mail authentication and my gmail is two-factored. I have never been hacked because I was never stupid enough to give my important passwords to untrustworthy sites (for which I have a weak password)

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

Banning the mailing of gold will not solve the problem, it will only hinder the use of legitimate traders and people who like to give/receive gold from friends, etc.

I currently do most of my business on the TP. On occasion, like this weekend, I’ll buy from a guy posting his wares on map chat. This for me is a good thing, to be able to by and sell items, not only on the TP, but also from other people via the mail system to occasionally save a few silver.

A lot of my friends play GW2, but not all of them are in my guild. Even on top of that, anyone in the guild I’m in is able to withdraw money/mats. The problem with my friends and I using the bank for cash is if someone is at the GB, they are free to withdraw the gold, and whats to stop them? I love the mailing system for this. One week I’ll borrow 3g, then I’ll repay or let him borrow 5g, etc. I love being able to do this, why should I have this taken away from me? Again, it’s not fair to the majority of the players, because of a few abusers.

Many have said that the regular players should not be affected, and I agree. Eliminating sending items and gold in the mail affects regular players adversely. Some say " Join a guild use the Guild bank." but then, Botters and Gold Sellers can also join a guild, and send money to their co-conspiritors that way. ( The customer is a co-conspiritor…without him, there is no market for gold sellers.).

Some have said " awww the poor innocent Against-the – ToS Gold buyer is only going after the cheapest price, that is normal behavior" is basically saying that someone that recieves stolen goods is just going after the cheapest price. Chances are the Gold someone is buying from a Gold seller was attained in the first place through a hacked account.

I personally have zero sympathy for what happens to someone that purchased gold from a gold seller. I think this group needs to understand, that :

1. They affect the community adversely.
2. They affect the economy adversely.
3. they are just as bad for both as the gold sellers.
4. They will be treated just as the gold sellers are treated.

I do not accept that people that buy gold from gold sellers are innocents only going for " the best deal." sometimes the best deal comes from trafficking in stolen goods. Does not make it acceptable. These individuals are the root of the issue.

There are basically 3 groups of customers (excluding the gold farmers and sellers for a sec) that play MMO’s.

1. Players that have no issue whatsoever buying Gold from gold sellers.
2. Players that might buy from Gold sellers but fear that it may lead to their account being hacked, compromised, or banned by Anet for trafficking with Gold sellers.

3. People that would never trade with Gold Sellers, regardless of how cheap the gold is.

If you ban as many of the players in group 1, that you catch, then you further discourage the players in group 2, and maybe some of the players not caught in group 1, will stop buying Gold.

Once a player sees that trading in Gold leads to being banned, The potential market for the gold sellers disappears because:

1. A lot of Group 1, is gone.
2. The ones NOT caught will be less likely to buy gold.

I know tl;dr as it is.

I really do not feel any " innocent" buying from gold sellers is " innocent". I do not accept the " they are only going for the cheapest price." And whoever says this, since they themselves do not seem to find anything wrong in the behavior… I begin to wonder why they themselves are not trafficking in the gold seller’s product after all.’ these people aren’t out to harm the community , they are just buying from the cheapest source, and you’d have to be a fool to buy from Anet when Gold Sellers sell so much cheaper."

Lastly, giving the apologists the benefit of the diubt that they in fact do NOT buy from gold sellers. They are doing something just as bad. They provide them camoflauge. They lend them comfort to believe that they should not suffer for their own actions. Buying Gold from a 3rd party company does not happen by accident.

It’s a willful act that is detrimental to the health of this game. Saying " it’s not affecting it THAT badly" totally misses the point.

One last thing. Some will say " then all the banned Gold buyer has to do is buy a new copy of the game."

Let them. Think of this as the penalty they pay for trafficking in the gold. $60 to Anet. This can be seen as a just compensation. This money can go into maintaining the game, and future content.
