Why do i have to pay for something I am wanting to sell, but then decide to take it back and never receive my gold back?
In my opinion, this is a bad design.
Thank you.

I think you mean on the TP? If so you should ask in the BLTC subforum. It sounds like you are referring to the listing fee. That’s there for economic reasons, as MMO’s require gold sinks or everything becomes prohibitively expensive. See the various BLTC discussions for more detail on that.

The listing fee is primarily present in order to prevent you from using the Trading Post as a personal bank (i.e. list an item for a ton of money to ensure no one buys it, then cancel the listing when you want to “withdraw” it.

It’s the same way with EBay. If you list something you have to pay a listing fee… whether it sales or not.

EBay is looking to make their cut of the profit… However, in a case like GW2 consider it a way to not only take money out of the economy as a mitigation of completely running wild on costs.

Also consider, it is a way for GW2 to achieve less lag. If there were no listing fee… then more stuff would be listed. Thus increasing the memory portion for the Trading Post and lag the game.

Just my opinion.

If there was no listing fee then the TP becomes a place to store an infinite amount of items.

Hopefully you can see why this would be bad.

Thank you.

It’s called ‘risk’ and it’s reasonable because of the risk/reward balance of making money on the TP. It ensures that people ‘behave’ and use the TP as intended as well.

You’re paying to use Evon’s services, regardless of if it sells or not. Works that way in real life too, where some downpayments are non-refundable.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

Ok… so 5 accounts including bank slots and inventory isn’t enough., you have to prevent people from using trading post as a bank?
There should be more fair ways to prevent that, like making a time limit, let’s say 12 hours or making upper limit or whatever.
When you put a standard price on some item and prices suddenly go down, you loose a lot of gold because the market is not stable?
I have nothign against a trading fee, but paying for nothign is ridiculous:)

If you have to be a hoarder then there are bank slots and inventory bag slots you can buy. You can also create your own guild and upgrade the bank.

Don’t be daft … the fee isn’t ONLY there to prevent people from using the TP as a bank, though that is a very good reason for it from what I can tell (unless you don’t mind paying a 10% holder fee on your goods).

If you didn’t get anything for your fee, that should show you right their what one of it’s purposes are. It’s barrier to prevent you from making a mistake and not thinking about what you’re doing.

If you put a “standard” price on something and the item doesnt sell in a considerable timeframe, the price wasnt “standard”, simple as that.
If you dont want to take the risk of your item not selling, you have the option of selling to the highest bid, getting your gold instantly.
The listing fee is fine as it is because it has certain purposes.

Your misunderstanding of how the TP works is NOT a bad design but a mistake on your part.

I perfectly understand the logic of the listing fee, as highlighted in this thread…. until you realize you must pay the listing fee even when matching highest buyer. That seems strange to me, and unnecessary.

Not having it might give a 5% advantage to buy orders, which actually could be good for the economy and the TP in general (though absolutely would be open for debate and worthy of thought).

At the least the listing fee could be directly taken from the profits, so you don’t have situations where noobs get precursors and can’t even sell them, not even to the highest buyer.

Look up the definition of the word, “fee”. I think your answer is there.

You do not appear to be aware of the actual reason for the “fee”. Anet has no need for in-game gold (they frankly own ALL the gold and create and destroy millions of it daily), but for any MMO economy to be healthy gold DOES need to be removed from the game (a “gold sink”) in a manner that is not “obtrusive” to the player (simply for the sake of “immersion”). The TP transaction fees are one such “gold sink” and ARE VERY necessary.

Because in reality you aren’t selling to the highest buyer, simply entering a sell order at the price of the highest buyer when you brought up the sell screen. That buyer may be gone by the time you hit sell. Once the sell order is generated it then checks to see if there are any buyers interested at your price. If the found buyer isn’t interested in all that you are selling, you will still have a sell order of the remaining at that price, likely just above the new current high bid. That’s how you get all those sell price spikes down to the the bid price when you look at the daily charts on GW2TP.COM.
