Seperate real money gem store
Most people would object. The only thing that keeps the gem store from being a p2w issue is that you can buy gems with gold.
So.. they would object for p2w because i get a permanent version for a ‘look’ for 10 euro where they get it for ‘free’. And what function has the gem- store ‘micro transactions’ then? Skip real money and just make it an extra game shop that has nothing to do with real money? The gem store was added to keep an income of real money, not of trillions of in- game gold right? why not reward the small group of people that support the game by adding nothing game braking or giving bonuses to others. They can get exactely the same but they have to work harder for it ( doing gold farms). real money doesnt grow on a tree while sitting in a chair, so yea… it isnt like cheating or something :P i get the pay2win model ( planetside 2 has it very strong imo) like you get 1 gun for idk how many hours of farming and that gun is for 1 single character class where you got 6 or 7 for them. So alot time consuming. And at a certain point you get killed over and over by a person that has better stuff than you. You can get it but that takes alooottt of time. This stuff is just cosmetic. No extra bonuses. Just convienient. I dont see a p2w model to people who get a permanent version over a single use version. Its just a extra reward because you support. With rift howerver —> paying means patron means extra stuff like weapons and gear = p2w. Right?

I’d actually like this to get rid of that excuse. The gold to gem conversion is ludicrous for an average player, so while in theory anything can be bought with in game gold, in practice it can’t be. This leads to the same issue being brought up every time something in the gem store is overpriced. People complain about the gold cost, then are told it isn’t for them, its for people spending actual cash.
Separate the store and we might actually get cheap items back that encourage people to spend $10 to get the item and have gems left over. No worry about lost sales through people converting. No excuses about it not being pay2win because you can, hypothetically, get it with in game gold.
Some items shouldn’t be behind a pay wall. Bank tabs etc. I think belong in an either/or store. Transmutation stones shouldn’t be in the game at all IMO, but also DEFINITELY shouldn’t be in a cash only shop. Cosmetic items, and some musical instruments etc. (not all of them) could be cash only though.
That said, much as I’d like to get rid of the “you can buy it with gold” thing, the backlash would be horrific.

I agree with you on some of the items being not behind a paywall. Indeed character slots ( at least 8 for all classes would be normal right? ) after that, extra character slots okay.. i get that. Bank tabs, uhm well yea.. you need those. With 5 characters 1 tab nopee. aint gonna work. Not if you want a bit more than one armor per character etc.. And yes transmogification should be something that is doable with gold instead of gems. i just prefer not using them since they are hard to come by but yea gold would be better.
And about the avarage player, i think i am. Maybe playing a bit more but i dont like farming gold. Now my orichalcum runs arent worth it anymore since ori is now 3 silver instead of 4/5 and yea omnom as well… So i prefer to keep my money for ingame stuff only like crafting and tp instead of buying gems wich makes me broke instantly. And the fact that i could buy 800 gems for 24 gold at the beginning ( bought the mariners horn back then) and now its a insane 7 gold per 100 gems ( or even less then 100) i prefer to keep my gold in pocket… As well as my money since a single skin for 10 euro.. Srry i want it but i prefer buying something more usefull then.. how mutch i’d like to buy it..
I actually have no problem with it, having never used gold to buy gems. But I still think people would cry like the world was ending. One thing I’ve noticed is that people are either kittening about things that inconvenience them or kittening about people kittening about things that inconvenience them.
This is a terrible idea. What it comes down to, is that you are asking for a rebate.
If you think the stuff on the gem store is not worth your money, dont buy it.
And why complain about people that buy gems with in game gold? Those people actually have a special purpose because first of all, its a huge gold sink in game and important in order to keep inflation in check. They also add value to gems because the more people buy gems with gold, the higher the rate goes, which means that you will receive more gold for your 10 bucks.
I dont have a problem, if Anet gives out goodies for people that spend money on gems like in December but a 2nd gemstore? I dont see the point.

Thread Summary: Other people have more in-game stuff than I do. Please make it so that they can’t. KThx
Nope don’t like this idea one bit.
First of all, im not crying about stuff other people have that i dont have. i have bought gems with gold many times, but sometimes i did it with real money. Im just saying that that didnt gave me a feel that i spended my real money good, since i can get it with in-game gold as well. And if i wanted to cry about stuff.. you would see me all around the forum crying about legendaries since i dont have one.. So no i dont cry about stuff. Im just asking about a improvement for money payers, since atm there is not a single reason to buy stuff with money apart from doing ‘the right thing and helping the devs’. And: ‘other people have more ingame stuff then i do’ no sorry im not a baby, i have all halloween town clothes and thats more than enough.
btw: i dont think stuff in the gem store isnt’t worth it, since if thats so i would never bought ‘useless’ town clothes, im just saying its not worth the price range of 10 euro for its current state. If only the word’ unlimited useabilty ( like achiev stuff) ’ would appear it would deff be worth it. thats all im saying….

I thought about this a while ago, adding cosmetic items as a seperate, real-world “diamond” currency. It’s a fine idea, but P2W items would eventually encroach into this new system, much like it’s began to with gems, so should be permanently left without.

So only skins and non usable stuff permanent. ( i dont get it why everybody isnt wineing about the permanent tools then but okay… ( not trying to be rude or anything). Since ive noticed that indeed people would complain if transmog stones for instance would be ‘permanent’ But you have permanent tools, salavage stuff etc..

Yeah, the system would be fine if ArenaNet (or NCSoft) could follow their initial rules of “cosmetic/convenience only”.
But as you can, especially from recent acts, they have trouble obeying these as more and more P2W items creep in.

You keep forgetting that gems in general can only be obtained with real money.
For someone to buy some gems with gold, someone else has to buy those gems with money first and exchange them for gold, making your whole scheme moot.

Totally not true, people paying real money decreases the cost in gold only. They would still be purchaseable with gold if nobody bought gems → gold unless ArenaNet changed how it works.

Wanze is totally correct and you are totally incorrect.
The gems available for purchase with gold are a FINITE supply, made available ONLY by players BUYING gems with real money and then trading them for GOLD.
The number of gems in the game is always equal to [gems put into exchange at launch] + [gems bought with gold] – [gems spent in store]

And they would become so expensive as to be practically unpurchasable before the pool of gems ran out if the algorithm works as expected. I’m sure I would be converting my gems into gold well before that point was reached though.
I think it’s a fairly common misconception that all purchased gems go into the pool instead of only the gems that are converted to gold.

To clarify: I said the number of gems in the game, not the number of gems available for exchange. That is a subset of gems in the game.

Sorry, the way I quoted made it look like I was trying to correct you when I really meant to agree and expand on your post. The total number of gems in the game isn’t as interesting IMO as the gems in the conversion pool, so that’s what I focused on.

i would like to have more gems when i pay with real money, the exchange rate only gives you a loss anyway (when changing it to gold) so it will only make buying gems with RL money more attractive.
also, P2W only exists when you have an advantage over someone else, does a skin give you an unfair advantage?
no, it’s just something you want, an inconvenience, not P2W.

I had this plan in the beginning as well. Getting more gems for your 25 euro. That seems a pretty simple thing but to change all the gem cards in the ‘whole’ world is i think a bit harder. And isnt just this ( gold to gems depens on people that buy gems with money) that shows that less and less people buy gems with money and more and more buy it with gold. For me the 8 gold per 100 gold is too mutch to handle. And that is to bad since i would really want to buy those skins. Other thing is that they overprice everyting as well. Like its a standard everything is 800 gems but yea…. So why not do something simple thats doesnt hurt anyone ( right?) Its not that they will sell legandaries for 80 euro or something…
Btw, adding a ‘special’ permanent thing to a real money gem store gets rid of a part of the gold sellers, and more money to anet instead of botters. ( since if you are going to buy gold from sellers for gems, why not buy a better version for the same bucks then a non perma version?) ( and if then the problem occurs that everyone only buys stuff a single time since its perma and that they will run out of a stable money stream… well they add enough stuff everytime in the gem store as well as armor.. All new armors have been gem store till now( exept acended) so yea people ( like me) will buy them deff. ( still needs some more permanent ingame armor additons and content but thats another thread)

The price of converting gold to gems depends on how many gems are converted to gold, not how many gems are purchased. The solution if you think the gold to gem conversion is too expensive is to encourage more players to convert their gems to gold either by increasing the amount of gold they get, or making gold more desirable by adding more desirable things that can only be purchased with gold, like cultural items.
I’ve bought lots of gems and never converted them into gold because everything I was willing to pay the equivalent dollar price for was easy enough to obtain just by playing. Changing the cost of gems would just irritate the people that paid full price for them to buy gem store items and would do very little to change the conversion rate.

it’s actually dead simple, all Anet need to add is a script code that adds X more gems when you register with a gem card.
they can eventually release cards that states the bonus gems, that only takes a bit of photoshopping.

maybe an alternative, the exchange still has normal gems but you can buy gold gems with real money.
so what happens now, everything you want to buy in the gem store is cheaper with gold gems.
so an item that is normally 800 gems is now about 500 gold gems (you could also call it platinum), so now the in-game rich ppl can stay around for free all they want while paying the full price while the actual supporters get more out of it, a win win all the way.

Its still basically just asking for lowering gem prices. Why would Anet do that?

not really, the gem prices will just be lower for ppl who actually spend money on gems, how it currently is doesn’t benefit Anet in the slightest, the new way does.
better yet, they can make high popular items on a higher price while keeping the gold gem price the same, this makes exchanging gold→gem less popular and the RL money→gem allot more popular.

You are constantly ignoring the fact that every gem in the game is paid for with real money (bar the initial gems put into the exchange before release).
It is actually beneficial for the game (and Anet), if people buy gems with gold:
If you buy 800 gems with money and spend it in the gem store, thats 10 bucks in Anets pocket.
But if you buy 800 gems with money, then trade it with me for my gold and i spend the gems in the store, its still 10 bucks in ANets pocket, plus they sunk some gold out of the economy, which keeps inflation in check.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
Gems have to remain tradeable for gold, because that is one important way that the game reduces real-money trading and RMT is a bigger threat to the economy than anything else mentioned. Excluding some items from the gem shop would decrease the effectiveness of this strategy.
In any case, even if the above weren’t true, the current set up is an ideal compromise for the vast majority of players:
- Those who have more dollars than time can spend cash to buy things that make playing more fun for them.
- Those that have more time can avoid spending cash altogether and not be at a disadvantage.
It’s true there are some outliers on both sides: people incredibly efficient at making in-game coin and people with tons of disposable income. But just aren’t enough of either that ANet needs to (or should) change their policies because of them.

regardless on how you do it, it benefits Anet only when you pay real money, buying gems with gold is nothing more then a loss on Anet’s part.

you want Anet to benefit from the gem store, this is a solution.

You cannot buy gems with gold unless those gems were already bought by another player with real money and then traded for gold. ArenaNet gets their money for EVERY gem that is spent (exception being the AP rewards), they just may not have gotten it from you.
i would like to have more gems when i pay with real money, the exchange rate only gives you a loss anyway (when changing it to gold) so it will only make buying gems with RL money more attractive.
also, P2W only exists when you have an advantage over someone else, does a skin give you an unfair advantage?
no, it’s just something you want, an inconvenience, not P2W.I had this plan in the beginning as well. Getting more gems for your 25 euro. That seems a pretty simple thing but to change all the gem cards in the ‘whole’ world is i think a bit harder.
it’s actually dead simple, all Anet need to add is a script code that adds X more gems when you register with a gem card.
they can eventually release cards that states the bonus gems, that only takes a bit of photoshopping. So why not do something simple thats doesnt hurt anyone ( right?) Its not that they will sell legandaries for 80 euro or something…
maybe an alternative, the exchange still has normal gems but you can buy gold gems with real money.
so what happens now, everything you want to buy in the gem store is cheaper with gold gems.
so an item that is normally 800 gems is now about 500 gold gems (you could also call it platinum), so now the in-game rich ppl can stay around for free all they want while paying the full price while the actual supporters get more out of it, a win win all the way.Its still basically just asking for lowering gem prices. Why would Anet do that?
not really, the gem prices will just be lower for ppl who actually spend money on gems, how it currently is doesn’t benefit Anet in the slightest, the new way does.
better yet, they can make high popular items on a higher price while keeping the gold gem price the same, this makes exchanging gold->gem less popular and the RL money->gem allot more popular.
more money->support for Anet->more stuff->profitYou are constantly ignoring the fact that every gem in the game is paid for with real money (bar the initial gems put into the exchange before release).
It is actually beneficial for the game (and Anet), if people buy gems with gold:
If you buy 800 gems with money and spend it in the gem store, thats 10 bucks in Anets pocket.
But if you buy 800 gems with money, then trade it with me for my gold and i spend the gems in the store, its still 10 bucks in ANets pocket, plus they sunk some gold out of the economy, which keeps inflation in check.whether you or me using gold to buy gems, it’s not giving any money, that’s a free service.
regardless on how you do it, it benefits Anet only when you pay real money, buying gems with gold is nothing more then a loss on Anet’s part.
also, inflation in a game is nothing more then something what players make out of it, if someone is buying allot of items that (s)he exchanged with money->gem->gold then (s)he can damage your inflation just as much, no amount of inflation damages Anet, only the TP trippers.you want Anet to benefit from the gem store, this is a solution.

true, but it doesn’t excuse the low income with such a system, you also need to keep in mind that eventually you will have a time when getting gems is going to be way to easy.
we already have the champ train hurting the gold influx, if it really depends on ppl buying gems with money then you first need a reason to do exactly that.
all this system does is adding a way to buy gems with real money while lowering the attraction to buy it from someone else’s pocket, your real money now adds more value to your gems while the gold→gem exchange doesn’t benefit anyone at all.
the gem→gold exchange will still be the same, no influx there.

OK, i gonna stop arguing with someone, who fails to understand the basic concept of the gem exchange.

or it’s your own inability to understand the other side of a story, more likely a comprehension problem then anything.
Well, since nobody wants a seperate gem store. ( i dont know why but okay..) i came up with a diff idea. Give us a recipe for the skins to craft. So you get the skin the first time and after that you can craft it again for other character with the recipe. ( no limted use materials like snow etc…) One of the major downsides of gw2 is that every new content is gem store stuff. Its hey.. new weapons… ow its rgn… hey new gear… ow gem store. Why not give us a bit more PERMANENT stuff that we can get from bosses in dungeons etc… or recipes that drop that have gear for lets say 60 or 80 ( doesnt matter) but wich looks different. That way everyone looks a bit different, and its only a win for the people who like it and not a loss for those who dont. Why spend mutch time on awsome looking stuff when only a small percentage can get/ afford it?
