Silk crashing, investors move to "new thing"
this is temporary as buyers focus on metals to get the mastercraft and rare versions of the new backpiece. The ascended version requires one of three paths that use either damask, deldimor or elonian materials. Lots of speculation and even ANet has said to use the leathersmith path but silk will still be needed.
I can honestly say that I never expected to read the words silk is crashing….
Not only did silk crash, but linen did too. Which is a shame because I’m farming LA with my lvl 50 guard to level him up, and I’m getting a ton of scraps from salvaging and molten bags.
It is too late to invest in iron ore. But if you look over at the collections tab, there are still plenty of items out there to speculate and hold on to if you are willing to get a 2nd account and stock it up on the pick-up tab.
Has absoutely nothingto do with investors but with added supply of cloth in the Alliance Supply bags.

T5 and T6 are crashing as well. Not sure why, those don’t drop in the LA instance…
Time to buy t6 mats then. Or in a few days, doesn’t look like we have reached the bottom point yet.
They were up due to speculation over the patch. They always go up with patches.
I think t5 and 6 just went down due to higher supply. The last 2 patches steered alot of people away from the champ trains towards the marionette, which doesnt spawn alot of champ bags.
LA however, spawns alot of champs, so the supply increased.
In general, i think t6 mats are not a good investment for long term flipping as their value rarely spikes more than 35% over a couple of months.

the amount of champs in LA pales in comparison to champ train. You get like 6-12 bags in 40 minutes, versus 6 bags in 6-12 minutes in a champ train
really comes down to, killing lots of smaller things is better for basic materials.

It might be right that champ trains give more bags, but the amount of people farming LA right now also dwarves any number of players on the trains at any given time.

tl;dr warning———
You make a solid point but it spawns a follow up question. Could this vast amount of loot upset the economy on a grander scale than just iron and fabric? I had to have salvaged 600 items since Tuesday evening (I got 3 agent of entropy AP awards), at least and opened no less than 750 bags with various mats. Every time I hit LA, I am in overflow. How many people are in each instance of LA? 200? 500?
A ton of of mats could crash because of this…..the iron fiasco will splutter out quick because only so many people want the back item, I love it but a ton of people hate it. That splutter will happen before the LS for Lion’s Arch is finished and has been alluded to, I doubt this monsoon of loot is going to abate in the normal 2 week window.
Could we be on the precipice of a true devaluation of a broad set of commodities? Could this be what they hinted at last year when they said the economy of the game was going to change? Scarlet was a loot fest but it was difficult because they time gated it (the loot was better but there was less of it). If I want to, I can run in circles around the old crafting area of LA for 45 minutes of every hour of the day. I can easily see acquiring 1000+ provision bags in a single day.
Take a look and gem to gold conversions over the last 4 days…it’s fallen every day. What do people think parity is for gems to gold? 100 gems to 4 gold? To 5? It’s currently trading at 5.90 gold per 100 gems but Monday night it was 6.30. That’s a small percentage but it has only been 4 days, what about after 4 weeks of this?

I dont think this will affect alot of mats. The bags just spawn cloth as common mats and they can do with a bit of devaluation. Leather gained value in general due to the introduced recipes, which is also fine.
Iron will level itself out faster than cloth did. And if other mats rise in price, lke ectos for example, its just because people disrupted their usual farming patterns (champ trains/world bosses).

What trading post are you guys looking at? Silk and Linen are the same price they were when I looked at them last week lol.

Silk lost 50% value compared to last week, Linen 15%.

I think silk was at 2.06 silver. It is like 1.6 silver now.
linen was like 7.5 and it is at 6 silver?
Something like that.
I think just a bunch of people doing the event driving the price down.
More people are just not bothering to make Ascended armour, as well.
More people are just not bothering to make Ascended armour, as well.
I think it’s a combination of this and the Alliance bags.
Obviously, silk was the largest component of Ascended armor (as Damask was required for every insignia and certain armor components)…
That easily accounted for a dramatic increase in demand for silk. Especially given the insane requirements. 100 bolts for 1 damask thread.
People have probably realized that Ascended armor was obscenely overpriced for what it was.
Most of the people that have opted to craft it will probably only do so like once.
However, the addition of a new influx of cloth to the biggest zergfest since Queen Jennah’s Jubilee…
I think that’s the biggest component. Cloth is getting generated like crazy.
I think another dynamic in this is the requirement for a fair amount of funds for the gift of blades recipie, the thoughtless potion, and a craft station recipie. For a typical player, the best way to obtain these funds quickly and painlessly is to sell some of our stocks of cloth
I think T5 and T6 is crashing because there is no demand.
I was buying T5 Blood and when i had 3000, i remembered that there won’t come a huge patch which involves T5 soon.
We got ascended Weapons and Armor, jeweler and cooking is missing , if it ever will happen what i higly doubt jeweler will likely need jewels.
Anyone who had been hoarding silk scraps after they’d been bouncing around a bit above 2s for a month should probably find a new way to make money; investing is not for them. Everyone with a lick of sense dumped their inventory long ago and moved on well before this patch hit.
You’re just looking at a supply shock in a market without a lot of inventories to smooth out prices. This is normal.
