I’ve been telling everyone to stock up on T5 leather (ONLY if you have an alt account, otherwise you stock up on the t6 cured).

For the longest time I’ve also been telling people to stock up on crystals/orbs. Time is running out on these ones, however, and it’s been quite awhile since they have been near vendor price (they now trade from 1c-30c off vendor price).

If you want a bit more risk, you can consider the after-effects of precursor crafting.

When precursor crafting comes, more people will be able to chase a legendary. If the demand for legendaries increases, expect an increase in the demand for legendary components such as T6 mats and lodestones. Of course, there is always a risk that Anet could adjust drop rates for these items.

Finally, specific cores and lodestones are a great long-term opportunity to invest in. All Anet needs to do is introduce an epic legendary that uses these cheap components. Let’s look at Crystal Lodestones. If I recall, price fluctuates between 30-60S. Well what if they come up with a legendary as epic as Twilight/Sunrise that uses these lodestones? It’s going to shoot up tremendously.

As always, as a self disclosure, I have invested in all of these. Haven’t updated my bank screenshots since October.

The items I talked about are commodity items. Unless you are talking about ‘seasonal’ items, skins are always something that you can consider. I generally stay away from them since they are much riskier. The skin market is diluted everyday.

Might want to look at the mini-market as well. Buyers of mini’s are some of the most easiest to take advantage of thanks to their OCD ;P

Apart from ore and jewels for ascending jeweling you might want to consider Exquisite Chrysocola Orbs, which are crafted, so they dont go into your collectors tab.

The Exquisite Jewels are basically the equivalent of inscriptions/insignias and will be needed to level to 500.

As Exquisite jewels need 1 ecto and 2 ori ingots to craft, their crafting price will pretty much be stable for the coming months around 50 silver.

However, there is a huge surplus of supply coming in for months now ( i know from where but wont disclose this here) so right now they hover around 8-12 silver.

Their price might even drop more but i am sure that it will rise close to crafting cost with jeweller500.

I also stocked up on crystals/orbs right after ascended weapons got introduced but i think gold/silver/platinum will be the better investment.

Orbs might rise in price and were a safe investment anyways if you bought at vendor price but i am not so sure about the lower tier crystals. Lower tier might rise a bit as well, if orbs rise high enough to make promotion profitable but i doubt it.

Demand for those can only be created, if alot of people start leveling jeweling from 0-400 and I am not sure how much ascended weapon/armor crafting raised the average prices of t2-5 fine crafting mats (claws, bloods etc.).

Gold/Silver/Platinum however will be used on a daily basis after everybody hit 500 to craft xunlai electrum ingots. So i think the potential profit will be higher on ore than jewels.

I agree with Wanze that silver and gold are good investments. Silver is the elder wood of the metals and gold just slightly above that, I may drop some savings into silver and gold. I think platinum is pretty high right now though I cannot tell how high it will go.

Yea, I have stocked up on both silver and gold ore, but not nearly enough (probably no more than 24 stacks each). The price rise before I could get all my buy orders in at a reasonable cost. Maybe there is still room since I still have a lot of gold.

My rationale behind investing in crystals/orbs is not due to acended trinket crafting (although I would welcome it), but due to legendary trinkets, especially the backpiece which Colin hinted at awhile back.

John Smith is always looking for opportunity to correct broken markets. He did it with silk, and I’m sure he will do work on orbs/crystals and leather.

My ideal scenario is that legendary backpieces will come out and will require all 8 orb types to make two gifts (similar to the T6 gifts). And hopefully it will also require leather hides (it is a backpiece after all) to make a component.

The gift of metal/wood comparison to the 8 regular orbs is intriguing, i give you that.

It all comes down to what jeweller 500 will give us. As Ascended Trinkets are available through other means, i also wonder what they will introduce.

Infusions, which was my first guess last year, were mostly covered with the Fractured! Patch on Dec. 10th.

Legendary Trinkets or a backpiece seem logical to me as well but as they put the 2 craftable ascended backpieces Shadow of Grenth and Light of Dwayna into the armorsmithing category, i doubt that it would be backpieces that will need jewels for the gifts.

Legendary trinkets would make more sense, as ascended ones are already available.
It also is way harder to lvl jewelling from 400-500 as there are only 3 trinkets to discover compared to 6 for armors and even more for weapons depending on profession. This will put more demand on the different orbs as you need 6 different stats to discover 18 different trinkets compared to only 3 different stats for 6 each armor pieces or 2 stats for 9 different weaponsmithing weapons.

Another interesting thing to consider for the 8-multipliers..

How many lodestones are there? 7 different types.

What is the one material that shows up in the crafting collections tab that can be the 8th?

I remember a similar post, not sure if it was from you. The topic in question was about Silver Doubloons and it was a response to my post where i published a screenshot of my loot table for tens of thousands of various lootbags containing Silver Doubloons and also Sticks of Butter.

At that time my screenshot showed about 10g worth of butter and i am happy to inform you that it sold within a week of posting it. The demand was definately there.

This is nothing more than a wild guess, a good one at it, i give you that.
I bought a stack of glacial lodestones and putrid essence a couple of months back due to the same reasons you stated in this topic or another one.
Nothing changed towards those items.

I thought i hit the jackpot when shadow of grenth required 10 glacial lodestones but it didnt make a dent into its value.

However, Anet promoting the Mask of Grenth with a screenshot of it featuring the Deathly Shoulder Pads from Halloween 2012 gave me lots of profit buying up dozens of those a couple of months prior for a couple of gold.

For most of the time, posting volume and its price becomes significant.
It makes a difference, if 50% of he supply listed on the tp are close to vendor value or not.

Many people seem to like to buy things during the last day they are available to drop ingame such as minis (Toxic Hybrid, Ho-Ho tron), back pieces (spore thing), and such. I would agree the black lion weapons will probably be a good buy (especially the sclerite ones as they had the greatest discount essentially of 66% while the other ones were 40% off and 29% off fused skins.) Another one that may not have been mentioned is mini scarlets and caithes as with more people buying black lion keys and farming them they are more likely to drop again dropping their price for mystic forging.

I thought i hit the jackpot when shadow of grenth required 10 glacial lodestones but it didnt make a dent into its value.

I expect that’s because the Shadow of Grenth backpiece is considered “ugly” compared to the Light of Dwayna one. I see plenty of players around with the Dwayna backpiece, but hardly anyone with the Grenth version.

As for recommendations, I’m currently stockpiling Silver/Gold/Platinum and all manner of gems in preparation for r500 Jeweler. Not for resale (I’m not much of a speculator), but for my own future use. Crystals and T5 Dust may also be worth looking at since they can be promoted to Orbs and might be worthwhile if the price of Orbs skyrockets. (Personally I have lots of Crystals from doing JPs on level 80 characters though, so bear in mind that other players may similarly have large hoards of Crystals.)

I’m curious to see how the JC market transforms when the ores are finally needed — especially with players stockpiling for months.

For long-term investments, limited-time items (e.g., skins) would probably be the safest gamble, but nothing that may reoccur (e.g., seasonal). Anything craft-related is extremely volatile, and can easily change in any patch. It can change for better or worse, of course, but that’s not quite “safe”. ;P

If you’re referring to the BL skins, then they’re not a limited-time item. They’re also much easier to stockpile by both casual and hardcore players. Either group can buy 75 keys, and get enough scrap for two+ skins (at the time), and all in a matter of minutes. Compare that to a skin with a <1% drop-rate (i.e., possibly days to farm 1), that’s only available for 2 weeks, and can no longer be obtained afterwards.

The BL skins, however, should retain their potential long-term value — as long as it appeals to certain people’s tastes. It’ll just take a while longer due to the sale.
