Some Prices Seem Steep
Considering that there is nothing in the store that you NEED to play the game or be stronger than anyone else, your argument is instantly invalid. Keep in mind that, for the most part, you are buying cosmetic items. Also, you never have to spend a dime of your own money if you choose to thanks to anet allowing players to convert gold to gems.
As far as pricing, two things:
1. Your argument of “if prices were lower, people would spend more” is getting old and tiresome. You know how many times people post that on these forums? Sure, they might get a little boost in sales, but they would have to sell twice as much stuff if they halved the cost of an item and I don’t think sales would double if the prices were slashed. I think we can trust anet to make their own financial decisions on pricing considering they are doing just fine.
2. The ONLY source of revenue anet generates after you purchase the game is from gem sales. Think about that for a little. With all the additional content they release for free they have to make the money to pay all those employees somehow.
As far as keys go, those to me are overpriced, but only because it is an RNG system that you will lose out on far more than you will win. Having said that, they sell and they sell well so I guess, who am I to judge?
Cries of shills aside, yes the trash in the gemshop is overpriced. Since people are buying it anet has no reason to lower the prices.
Yes, they do seem a bit steep to me. I also skip the “chance of getting” items for obvious reasons. Either I am getting the item I want or not. Not a chance of getting. That’s just bad.
They seem steep…based on what?
I can check them with abstract logic and intuation…but that won’t get me any closer to making an informed decision on something that is a pretty run-of-the-mill business question.
I won’t say whether they’re too high or not, but it’s important to remember that “too high” is a relative term, and that kind of evaluation requires context.
For example, some items might be too high for me, personally, or they might be too high to hit that sweet spot between per-item-profit and volume of sales. The first isn’t useful for a business, and the second requires sales data that we just don’t have.

If people are buying it, it must not be overpriced.

Someone, somewhere will always buy something for any price. The question is, if the prices were lower would they sell far more and make more money?
NCSoft has never understood the word Micro in Micropayments.

The other question is, can we say anything informed on the subject with the amount of information we have?

Which is why they hired Crystin Cox to run the Gem Shop from Nexon where cash shops are their bread and butter.

Seriously, if the $ price is to high, spend gold. If that also is too high, consider what you are contemplating.
End of the day, TANSTAAFL. If there is something in life you can’t afford, you have three options: do without, whine, or change your circumstances so you can afford it.
