“Trading
Rumors tell of a merchant interested in items from major events in Tyria’s recent history, including Blade Shards. Players are encouraged to hold on to these items if they are interested in trading with her when she appears.”
I would guess it buys other account-bound things as well, such as Fortune Scraps or Gauntlet Tickets? Maybe code fragments and heirlooms? Basically any LS non-standard currency.^This is for just the stuff for when that crazy Sylvari was around, I meaning stuff you could not put in guild banks, could not sell to BLTC or sell the regular way, but just wipe the Soul/Account-bound stat for just a short bit, maybe just have it as a limited salvage kit that works on anything that can be broken down…including Soul/Account-bound stuff…
Its still a terrible idea because it would bring alot of markets out of equilibrium.
John Smith claimed many months ago that we would have market disequlibrium and the resultant was ascended crafting that through many markets out of whack for long periods of time. So, what’s your point here?
To be clear, I don’t agree with the OP. Delete your garbage items rather than recoding the TP, but your argument about equilibrium doesn’t work here.
The disequilibrium from ascended crafting (and intro of essences of luck at the same time) had a special long term purpose and is here to stay.
The spring cleaning would just be a short term disequilibrium (for 2 weeks) with alot of mat prices going down and then up again. I wont even start to explain why the idea to allow account bound mats and gear to be tradeable is bad.
Just think of all the mats, that would be salvageable from karma gear, they would flood the market for 2 weeks, the same with runes and sigils. Lets take melandru runes for example. Its value would denerate from 6g to 2g due to the influx of salvaged temple armor. Now all those people who had buy orders between 2-6g got shafted because they just bought an overpriced rune. At 2g, speculators and traders will buy up all the supply to sell it again at 5g, after spring cleaning is over.
Linen scraps could be salvaged from karma armor directly, instead of throwing 4 karma gloves into the mf to get out a salvageable item. Its price would tank 200-300% within hours, giving nifty crafters the opportunity to get cheap linen and make crafting components (linen coat padding etc.) that still have buy orders aimed at the regular price before.
Personally, i would make 1000s of gold within those 4 weeks of springcleaning and afterwards with very little effort.
Sometimes, markets get thrown into disequilibrium but those changes are usually triggered by major design/mechanic/meta changes and that justifies it.
A 2 week spring cleaning, including a limited time cancellation of design choices, doesnt have a higher purpose and therefore doesnt justify market disequilibrium.

the prices are changed to reasonable prices
let me ‘splain something to ya… prices are dictated by players’ willingness to buy or sell items at different prices. If you change how much my items are listed for, I’m going to be quite kittened. You can’t just say “you’re going to sell this for 10s and that’s that” because I’ll just say “no one is buying it for 10s, so I’m just going to not sell it and save myself 50c in listing fees”

I meant just for a week or so, you do know big events change every 2 weeks, or so I’ve heard, so this won’t go on forever, just maybe a week or less…
Since prices are set by the market, the part about ‘reasonable prices’ is pointless. I would take down every item I’ve been trying to sell, and only sell anything in that time period if it was close to, or higher than, the typical selling point. The only part that would be of interesting in your proposal would be to sell bound items, but that would create TONS of problems. For one, I want a legendary for the stat changing ability, but I think most players want them for the skins, so players that had bound legendaries to unlock the skin, could suddenly sell them while retaining the skin.
Crafting is designed for gear accessibility, not profit.
No I meant selling would be easier, buying stuff would still be the same, I’m just saying you can sell things bound to you is easier, buying stuff would not really change though if selling gets easier, players will have more money, that will bring those 1000+ down and make players have to do more stuff in the game, though I like trying to gain money by just using the BLTC…

Just because you have some more soulbound/accountbound items to sell doesnt mean you get more gold for it. The Trading post doesnt create gold but sinks gold through fees and taxes.

I’m talking about just having the ability to sell junky past your level bound stuff, not the amount of any money changes…
So, who is going to create a database of thousands (tens of thousands?) of items, most of which no one wants anyway, decide what the fair price of each should be, and update the game so that the entire system works perfectly and do it all within the next month or two when most of their resources are directed towards the China release and LS pt 2?
Also, please send three or four of his clones to my house, there are some chores I’ve been putting off that really should be done soon.

Not to mention an incredible waste of time and resources that could be spent fixing bugs or creating new content. And for what, so some OCD packrats can make 50 silver? If it’s unsellable, untradeable, and unusable, just delete it if you need the bank space.

But deleting items is such a hard task to do, first say destroy, and after that you have to click also the “are you shure” messagebox
Much better to port first to a random location with an NPC that gives you 1c after you first clicked to open a dialog, then scrolled to the item, after that click sell, and maybe after that click on the “are you shure” button. Ahh .. and maybe before post in the forum a question : where do i find this merchant now
You see .. that is waaaay easier than just destroy that item
