Hey guys, first off thanks Anet for your continued effort and dedication to improving the game. I’ve got 500hrs + on my account and I’m still finding it a pleasure to play each time I log on. Also thanks my fellow players that have made this one of the best MMO communities I’ve been with thus far <3.

The Trading Post: recent trends with popular, fast moving items suggest they are losing value and fast. Despite the nerfs to things such as karma commodities, Orichalcum nodes, etc, the supply (according to gw2 spidy) always seem to find a way to tank and prices go through the floor.

As a farmer, a TP enthusiastic, and an honest gamer trying to grind out a little personal profit, I find this pattern with prices discouraging. We are a little over week 7 of gw2, and it ‘seems’ that the volume of stuff hitting the TP is far greater than the demand. Does this suggest that there’s just now a whole bunch of 80lv players competing for sales? If so, I fear for what the economy will look like in the next few months. Perhaps there’s just not enough sources for players to burn these materials? Between PVP gear, dungeon gear, and drops perhaps highly valued commodities aren’t as needed as they should be.

There are so many variables. Us players don’t have the figures, but Anet you do. I’m not asking for insider info so I can make a quick buck off TP in the next 5 minutes.
My request: could you kindly provide some thoughts on the current state of the economy. How do you feel about the trends? Is there hope for us blue-collar farmers? Are there any changes that you ‘can’ comment on planned for the future, that will positively influence prices and the economy?

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to your thoughts.

According to Anet’s philosophy there shouldn’t be any farm\grind at all so I imagine things are not going according to anet’s plans.

Hmm I think what they meant was “you don’t have to grind”, and a semi-recent post one of the devs made said that they understand that there are people who want to farm, farming is part of MMOs, and farmers are good (I think they signed off with “farmers are GOOD, botters are BAD”.

Anyways, I’m looking for more for general thoughts on TP trends and economy from Anet. Not a commentary on farmers.

I commented on a different thread that I think the trend is for gathered materials to tend towards vendor prices.

You pointed out something very valid – there’s no need to craft exotic gear when Dungeon and Karma gear can be ground out, so high-level crafted armour is actually pretty third rate. So there’s not the demand to soak up all those excess materials.

Sadly AN have been issuing bandaids to redress these problems, like the anti-farming code and the special Mystic Forge recipes, rather than looking at the big picture. I wonder what their economist is doing for them.

guessing how many more pay checks this con is worth. Any half dead eve market monkey could list off a half dozen things that are broken and easily fixed in the economy.

Materials will remain worthless as long as there is nothing worth crafting (and there isn’t). I think it doesn’t help that the Pearl weapon exotics are hideous and no one wants them even though they are exotics.

I don’t have any specifics to give you unfortunately. What I will say is that we pay a lot of attention to the economy. It is vastly complex and so changes made have to be gentle and precise. This means there is a lag between recognizing problems and finding the exact solution that meets the problem and the exact intensity of the solution, because we don’t want to take shots in the dark. The economy is still stabilizing, but we are paying attention to patterns that aren’t positive and taking steps to correct the issues. In the next few month I would continue to expect an evolving game (and maybe some specific data eventually).

It would also help if players would stop listing things at 1c above vendor. They’re loosing money when they do that (but people don’t realize there’s a fee to use the TP apparently) and they’re driving the market to crap.

Don’t blame AN on a crappy economy, blame the playerbase, we’re the ones that think it’s a great idea :/ Yeah sure, there are things they can do to tweak things a little bit, but the grand scheme of things, it all comes down to the players

false, a good example is a legendary weapons, if you want to make one it will take you about 200 hours of gathering mats just for one(this number comes from people who already made them), if you want to make gold you will have to grind a little, for me i like to grind the orichalcum nods every day, so evey 2 days i can make a yellow item and sell it for a bout 1 gold profit,

What the game needs is more ITEM sinks too.

More forge recipes that make neat stuff that take 250 cinnamon, 250 chests, etc etc etc. Not temporary ones either.

The tax on the TP is harsh and need to be cut back, players are selling items for other players money and not introducing new money into the game, only a listing fee should apply.

I don’t feel like we’re seeing anything unexpected.

The demand structure of the game is going to shift as the game matures. As players accumulate more wealth the demand for lower tier items is going to continue to drop, while demand for prestige items will continue to rise.

I would expect that value will continue to accumulate in the limiting reagents of popular, expensive items. We’re seeing strong demand for mithril ore and elder wood (which are the most efficient things to toss in the forge to fish for precursors) but falling demand for orichalcum (only used in a couple forge recipes, not nearly as efficient as tossing rares; largely being floated by being the only real source of exotic jewelry) and plummeting for ancient wood (exotic weapon crafts only, and plenty are already being pumped out by the forge on misses).

In short, if commodities are going to fall off the map it’s because they aren’t valuable for creating forge food.
