Hey all! Just wondering if you think it would be better for me to keep or sell my pre… I just got it last night, and it is worth a lot of money. I will be making the legendary, but I have NONE of the mats but the pre… So with that said, would I be better off selling it now and hoping for a price crash by the time I have everything else? Or should I just keep it? Thanks for all your help!
Also I have heard that I can sell it on the TP for just over vendor price and it will go to the highest buyer w/o the huge TP fee, is this true? I would love to know your opinion on how to sell a pre, because I would hate to post it, then get undercut a min later and lose ~35+g
Thanks again for any help!,

If it is the Pre for the Legendary you want to make, keep it. That’s a no brainer.
If it is the Pre for a Legendary you don’t want, sell it and use the money to buy the Pre you want.

Yeah… Just wondering if the market is gonna crash in the near future… Cause if so, I could buy it back and have gained some money towards the other mats… As right now I have 15g haha, and that won’t get very far.
I think market may be at peak or darn close. If you only have 15 gold then you don’t have enough to even list it, do you? 5% of 700 (avg pre cost) is 35 gold……guess you better hold it or liquidate to sell. If it is the legendary you want, be sure you know exactly what it takes to build it and whether you would rather just buy one, building is pretty hard…..not that I know, I have only built ascended items.
I make most of my money as a high-value, low-velocity item seller, so I have experience in these very risky, incredibly slow-velocity markets. My recommendation is to watch the buyer list. There are a finite number of people who are “really looking for that item” and as they earn money, you can watch them remove their old buy orders and list higher ones. If you get good tracking these people, and you watch them closely, you can list your item at about a 1% undercut (NOT 1 copper, but 1%) and it will be enough of a difference from the next lowest seller that it incites those buyers to buy it at your price thinking that it’s “the best deal they’ll get”. If you play it right, you can sell your items within a day or two (depending on the market) and completely dodge getting undercut.
In general for high value items I highly recommend avoiding the 1c undercut because most buyers don’t consider it a “good deal”. It’s not as bad for precursors because those are higher velocity than, say, the Greatsaw skin, but I still recommend listing a few gold lower than the next item so buyers see it as a “good deal” and go for it instead of listing a buy order of their own.
Of course, if you’re totally worried about this market and the challenge, just wait for a buy order to rise to a satisfying point and sell it to that person.
On a side note, precursor crafting is coming in 2014 at some point according to Colin, game director, but we have no idea what it will entail. They have said they want to maintain the “value” of precursors, but we don’t know what their target value is. It may be worth it to sell it now depending on the precursor, but it may also be wise to hold onto it for some precursors. It’s all speculation right now, so you have to make that judgment call for yourself.
Yeah… I could sell some mats and have enough to list it… It’s the Bifrost pre.
See the thing is, if the market is at peak, which I think it is…. I could sell it now, then buy it a month and 1/2 from now (I hope) at less gold, and have most of my mats together.. idk! haha
And yes I plan on building it.
If you keep it, and (eventually) farm the mats you need, by the time you have your Legendary, you’ll have nothing (financially) left. If that sounds acceptable (it is to many, I assume), then go for it.
If you sell it, you’ll have funds necessary to invest here/there. If your speculations fair well, you could have enough just to buy the Legendary from TP. If that sounds like a “cheap” way to get one, then you could always just sell it, wait for the scavenger hunt, and then just buy whatever mats you’ll need.
It’s really up to how you want to the play the game, and what’s the most enjoyable route to a certain goal.
Also I have heard that I can sell it on the TP for just over vendor price and it will go to the highest buyer w/o the huge TP fee, is this true?
I believe that works, unless it’s been “fixed”, but I think the fees might still come out from the final sale. I’ve never tried it.
For my last attempts at the forge some months ago, I usually listed 1c under highest-seller, and never had to re-list any (for 10+). If you sell to highest-buyer, it’ll of course be instant, but will probably cost you a potential 50-75g. So… it’s up to preference.
Market for precursors could crash tomorrow or Friday (stream?) if they announce precursor crafting.
However, it could also go back up if the requirements for precursor crafting are difficult and time-consuming enough that buying a precursor is still a viable option.
Well, here’s my experience… I got The Legend randomly when I was a fairly new player. I loved The Bifrost, but said, I’m not going to build it now, so I’ll just sell it and get it again later…
A few months down the road, I got serious. I got my materials, I finished various gifts. Then it was time for the precursor. I spent 50g trying, didn’t get it, said eh, gave up. A month later it popped from the forge, next day I had my bifrost.
I recommend not selling it. You’ll be far happier when you finish the other gifts and font have to wait for a miracle to make it.
Edit: not too many folks are as lucky as I am ya know?
Yeah… I was thinking of it as a short-med term investment call… I would probably just put the ~700g in my guild bank and keep it there as I grind out the mats… That way, if pre crafting comes out I can decide what to do then… If crafting doesn’t, I have only lost about 100g and can just buy another off the TP… So it’s a potential loss of ~100g and a potential gain of maybe much more… That it, IF the market is at cap, and The Legend isn’t worth 1k gold two months from now.

I would love to know your opinion on my last post, as you seem to make many really good market calls in gw2 :P

Here’s what I would do.
Sell precursor. Use funds to buy T6/Lodes/dust/ectos or whatever buyable component you need.
Barring any other changes, I’m pretty sure component prices will be going up.
Be patient and expect to be undercut. Regardless pre’s move at a decent rate.

Pretty much this. The precursor market is very risky atm as precursor crafting has been announced. Though we don’t know the requirements for it, or even when it comes.
I would not want to sit on a precursor long-term with precursor crafting looming out there. Unless you’re committed to finishing the legendary I would sell it.
Precursor markets move pretty fast, all things considered. If you list it for around a 10g undercut it will almost surely move within a day; if you undercut by 20g it will be gone in a matter of hours. A 20g undercut is around a 2.5% undercut and has very little risk of not moving.
Thanks for the input, everyone! I was able to sell it today for an 8g undercut, netting 700g. I think I will invest this in the t6 mats I will need anyway.
Best case: pre crafting comes out soon. This may cause t6 mats to rise, but I will already have mine, and when the pre market goes down a bit, I can just buy it back.
Worst case: I buy t6 mats and w/o pre crafting, I will buy the pre back for hopfully not much more than 100g over what I sold it for.
A nice ~100g risk that I think may pay off.
Buy the mats and find another precursor is a good way to go

If you intend on making the legendary that the precursor goes with, hold onto it most definitely. It will cost you less in the long run. You will just have to suck it up and figure out the best way for you to acquire whatever else you need.
If it’s a lot of money to you, I would not take a gamble: I would sell it. For sure.
Once precursor crafting hits, precursors will inevitable tank for at least the first days. If you really want a precursor, buy it then. Don’t gamble now. Prices are at an all-time peak now, use that. You’ll hit yourself in the head if precursor prices do tank.
