It was announced that transfers would cost fro launch, it was only free until they got guesting sorted, and you mention wow, well they also charge for transfer.

Wow (but I don’t want to speak about it) has a strong community, full server with a constant population (not that in few days a server go from FULL to MEDIUM like in GW2) and you do not have to transfer around server to find a good guild or a server where people are on at night or at a particular time that you like to play!
Pay for a transfer shall be fine if it’s 1 to 5 $….1800 gems is almost the price of the whole game…B2P my AXX!!!

This was announced for a LONG time before it happened, and they gave everyone plenty of time to settle on a server. As far as I know its something to do with WvW, but it definitely doesn’t seem like a money making scheme (given so few people are likely to pay 1800 gems to do it, and more people would do it multiple times for say 500 gems).
You can guest on whatever server you want, allowing you to do anything on that server, except for WvW. The fee is simply to prevent people from WvW hopping to the winning servers.
The number of buttons you have means nothing. WoW is bloated with useless skills, Rift even more so. You can easily have 100 skills and only 5 commonly used ones.
You can guest for free.. also wow charges to change servers I want to say it is about 30 bucks… so you would be paying a monthly charge and paying to server transfer there.
It has been announced at release of the game that a server transfer will cost gems accordingly to the server population.
It has been delayed due to guesting system still not being implemented. Now that everything is in place, you can guest on other servers and play in PvE with your friends etc.
The only thing affected by this is WvW, however they had annouced a few weeks in advance that you should switch servers if you intend to do that.
Should have thought of moving before that happened don’t you think?
But yeah, you decide to go on forum and QQ about your inability to find a “good guild/community” prior to the transfer fees.

There are reasons for the fee.
Look at your own actions for one. You want to transfer to one of the big servers, right? Well, that’s exactly the kind of behavior the fee is meant to discourage.
After all, free server transferring results in servers that are, from a WvW point of view, pretty much dead. And the only reason for that is that the people who do WvW in there don’t like losing, so they move to the bigger, more likely biggest, servers. And that’s exactly why the top tier servers stay top tier: because everyone is going there for all the action.
WvW is supposed to be about players fighting, not about one side winning and two losing on a constant basis.
After all, there’s only a handful of reasons anyone who doesn’t do WvW would want to transfer servers. The RP communities on specific servers and friends playing on different servers/continents being the two biggest reasons.

Really thank you for ask more then 20$ in gems to transfer to a high population server where of course the fun will be more!
You lost a player and hopefully you will keep loosing more and more till you will need to reduce the number of server and made some free transfer!
If you need money just ask for a month fee like other are doing (WoW, Rift, EvE) do not do this subtle actions!

People complain about anything. If you give them a rock, they’ll complain why it’s a sedimentary and not volcanic. If you give them a $10 bill, they’ll complain why it’s old and dirty and not new and crisp.

I actually found this topic while searching what people would complain about the server transfer fee of 1800 gems for a very-high populated server.
Rethinking about what u just said, it makes sense – we often forgot that we dont have any monthly subscription fees and that the price we should pay is acceptable. This thoughts probably fall under the free-to-play plan for this game.
If WvW is that important to you and your server sucks, then pay the fee and move to a different one.
Just horrible though for all the people trying to get 100% map completion that now have to wait for their server to be good in WvW.

How delusional are you about WoW server populations? 90% of WoW players play on about 30% of the servers. I think there are 246 NA servers. Out of those 150 or more would be considered “dead” with no choice in raiding guilds and very little hardmode raiding progression especially in 25 man raids. Also PvP in WoW is clustered so even if you are on a dead server it doesnt matter you will always find PvP even at 4-5AM. Im on a dead server and I cant do WvW cause when I go there I never see anyone especially in early morning hours. Thats a problem and needs fixing.
